Kings and Castles placed on hold

Supreme Commander studio Gas Powered Games raises drawbridge on original fantasy RTS, with blame laid on "timing."

by

Last March, Gas Powered Games wrapped development on Supreme Commander 2, the sequel to its sci-fi real-time strategy title that specialized in massive-scale combat. The studio, which is led by veteran designer Chris Taylor, then moved on to the fantasy RTS Kings and Castles, going so far as to produce 35 video blogs to document the game's preproduction phase. However, it appears as if development on that title has come to a standstill.

Kings aren't really the sort to be placed on hold, but alas.

Speaking to Big Download over the weekend, Taylor confirmed that Kings and Castles has been placed on indefinite hold. The game had previously been scheduled to arrive for the PC and current-gen consoles, though no release date had been given.

"We've put the project on hold for now, but the moment I know more I will let you know," he said. Taylor went on to note that he was unable to provide additional details as to why development was suspended, saying only that it was a "timing thing."

Announced in February 2010, Kings and Castles was billed as an "epic real-time strategy game" that was to let players assume control of one of three kings who are locked in a megalomaniacal struggle for control of an original fantasy world. Gas Powered also promoted the game through the aforementioned video blogs, which were designed to document the game's development process.

I loved SupCom1 but disliked SupCom2. I hope they find their magic once again.

I keep telling these fools to hire me and I'll create the greatest RTS the world has ever seen. When you mix 30 years of computer war gaming with 30 years of military studies then you get KRUELGOR, leader of the Military Alliance of Gog (MAGOG).

Shame. The game looked like it had a lot of potential. :(

That's terrible... I enjoyed Total Annihilation: Kingdoms even more than Total Annihilation, so I was looking forward to this generation's equivalent.

It seems everything fell apart at the seams after the luke warm reception of Supreme Commander 2. It's really a shame to hear this because Total Annihilation and Forged Alliance were amazing titles... It really was a bad idea to thin out the game mechanics of Supreme Commander 2 to get it to scale for the consoles. Fans of their older games voted with their wallets and here we are at the chalkboard again.

Gas Powered Games now in trouble? Even though GPG are only having input in the game rather than leading development I am looking forward to Dungeon Siege 3

I hope they return to it ASAP. Medieval RTS games that aren't Warcraft are rare these days. And you can only get, like, twelve units in that crap fest. I want real armies and real base building. If Total War had a child with Stronghold.

Might just be me.. Can't help but feel that if they went about the realistic approach more this could have been better. Nothing too realistic, but characters that didn't look like they're off a kids TV programme. I'd love a decent RTS game with castles for my console. Bladestorm kind of did the job.. Although that wasn't really an RTS :p

No PC game EVER should be made for consoles as well. The end result is always the same.

These are dark days for RTS. Besides SC2 and DoW and perhaps Total War (if you considered it as an RTS), I can't find any other that are in development. It's like a drought of RTS....

Supreme Commander 2 was such a disappointment to me that I lost alot of faith in Gas Power. That game lacked that massive scale the first one had and too dumb down mechanics because they wanted it to be on consoles too.

Gas Powered Games has been running on fumes for several years now.

Ever since SupCom1 they've been going down hill. They really need to get together and focus on quality. Space Siege and SupCom2 were huge disappointments and mediocre games at best.

Looks like it might've been a cool game. Not sure how timing stops development, though.
