Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning US sales hit 330,000

NPD data reveals North American first-month sales of 38 Studios' new role-playing game across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Yesterday, the NPD Group revealed 38 Studios' Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning to be the fourth best-selling game of February. But what does that equal in actual sales? Data provided by the group to Joystiq shows the game sold 330,000 units in February.

Reckoning's first-month sales are no fantasy.

That figure represents sales of the role-playing game in the United States across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions of the title. GameSpot has contacted Electronic Arts regarding worldwide sales data for Reckoning, but as of press time, no response has been provided.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning shipped on February 7 and was the only new intellectual property to grace the NPD's list of top 10 games for the month. The game adds a new downloadable content pack--The Legend of Dead Kel--on March 20, and 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling said a sequel is in the works.

Good to see that it's at least possible for new IP to do well in today's gaming climate.

Given the high profile this was given in the build up to release, and it coming from EA, 330k seems rather low. I don't think the EA sales reps will be too pleased with that.

Played the demo...not my cup of tea, but I can see where others might dig it.

according to vgchartz it has sold 900,000 worldwide across all platforms http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=amalur One of my problems with the game is the difficulty. On normal difficulty by the time you get to level 18 or so you become virtually invincible, and you can just flail away and kill anything. This imbalance of power just increases as you level. With a bit of health drain or health regen I don't even need heath potions. As a mage I can just cast the uninterruptable spell meteor or as I like to call it 'Kill everything' then pick up the treasure. Challenge should have been balanced better.

@Albaficas I m not sure what version are you playing, skyrim story is on par with morrowind. i believe the story could be improve, but hey bethesda isnt the company that emphase on story. skyrim fix alot of balance issues that plague morrowind and oblivion. But still Skyrim will still be the one of best RPGs to date and the top of what Bethesda could craft.

Still don't see what people found in Oblivion and Skyrim... you shouldn't have to make your own fantasy all the friggin' time to enjoy a game Horrible difficulty when you crank it up + boring gameplay = wtf?

Albaficas
Albaficas

CptRexKramer skyrim is repetitive from lvl 0 to max...u do the same all over again again and again...until you r bored to death. its the exact same thing like oblivion but with a little better graphic and most horrible story than oblivion...

Albaficas
Albaficas

dxBIGBOSSxb the elder scrolls in overall sucked after oblivion and skyrim..the ppl who think these games are the best rpgs are probably new gamers who dont have a single clue. Morrowind----->oblivion-skyrim combined. oblivion and skyrim was crappy bugged to death rpgs made for console kids to enjoy some

KoA is a great rpg...hell its even better than all the fables combined but hey....kids and their stupid fps no brainer stories right...

EA's Pass system may be to blame for the low sales, it's insulting and it makes people feel that the game mustn't be worth keeping if the publisher/developer is scared of pre owned sales.

KoA is doing very well despite this article. The are #4 on the top 10 list of games that sold in Feb. Also the only new IP in the top 10

Since my PC died in a very wierd fashion after I started playing this game (My GraphiCard supposedly died IN-GAME), I'm abit wary about this game, but it's probably nVidia's crappy drivers that did that, and I didn't hear much complaints about it so I won't hold a candle to that. It was probably just the last straw in a series of abuse :P I did get to play a nice chunk of the game though, and for what it was worth, I liked it. I also played the Demo, and I don't get what is there to dislike about it, they are like one and the same. So if you didn't like the demo, the whole game might not be your cup of tea either. I personally love it. I was kinda bombarded with quests. Mostly generic ones, but I don't mind. The gameworld is so beautiful and fun to explore I won't hold it against them. Yes it does have quite a bit of grinding. So what? Do people these days even remember the times were grinding was one of the main aspects of an RPG game? And back then it didn't feel like a cheap MMO tactic, it felt important, and it does so here too. Story is lackluster, true, but this game was supposed to be an MMO, fellas. They had to turn it upside down, and for what it is, it rocks.

I enjoyed the game. Some of it seemed borrowed but the combat was really enjoyable. Giving it's a new IP, hope they still make the series as planned.

@ Mr_Alexander What rock were you hiding under? The game was overhyped to death from any media outlet that deals with gaming. No pre-release media? Demo came out a few weeks before the game, along with the plethora of other videos, images, and previews that were put out.

I totally want this game. Have to wait though because I at $60 a pop I have to choose wisely.

@Evdaddy11 Even though I agree with the good reviews Skyrim got, and that it was GOTY to some companies, I still agree, and may actually debate that KoA:TR is better.

That's pretty good for a fresh IP with almost no hype or pre-release media. @redskinStu Don't confuse a colorful art style with "kiddy-oriented".

Not amazing but not bad as well. Overall lifetime sales for this game should be pretty good. I def see it doing at least 2 Mil. The first entry in a new franchise is always about gaining a foothold and they have done that imo. From now on its about the buildup. They just need to deliver a great sequel.

This game is really underrated. Hopefully it gets over 1 million because it deserves. I've never seen combat this good in such a massive game. Overall the game is as good as Skyrim.

Rate "M," but I was disappointed at how "kiddy-oriented" the game was. Trading it in for sure.

I enjoyed the demo, but am not sure if I should pick up this or Skyrim? I can only take so much RPG, so I'd never get around to playing both of them. Yes, I realize Skyrim was Game Of The Year, blah, blah, blah, but I'm still on the fence. Any suggestions on which one to chose? (I'm playing on a console, BTW.)

I've spent about 30 hours with it, experimenting with different skill trees and play styles. The RPG elements and battle system are definitely what stand out in this game, on top of the graphics and design. Frankly, the story isn't great, but it keeps the game moving. Oh, and so many side quests. It's ridiculous. They're fun as long as you enjoy the combat.

This is just U.S. sales for a new unhyped IP. That's pretty good actually. I think word of month may help the game to sell more. The game is a lot of fun to play. You have everything at your finger tips and rolling and dodging attacks just before a spell of club hits you is always fun. The world is huge and beautiful. The characters, enemies, animals and everything else that moves in the world is drawn with great detail. With Todd McFarlane involved I can understand why. This game should sell at least 1.5 million or more before the end of the year. I'd like to see it sell twice that, but because it's a new IP and it's in the shadow of Mass Effect 3. Thankfully they are already talking about making a sequel. I think this will be a trilogy in the end. I expect the new game will be on the new systems in a couple years.

The demo was really good, actually surprised me. Plan on picking it up soon.

sad really. happy for them. but sad it is not higher, Mass effect 3 sold ten times that in 1 week. not saying ANYTHING good or bad about that Mass Effect (I have yet to play ME3 or kingdoms) but I bet you kingdoms is better and at least 3 or 4 times longer.

I think the only real good thing about this game was the fighting everything else was average, but this game have a lot of potential and if done right the sequel could become something really amazing.

That's IT? Well, this only reflects retail sales. I'd like to think digital sales alone were more than that. I'll be first in line to buy it when the price drops to ~$25.

@Jd1680a No, this is just physical sales through almost all major retailers. It doesn't have Amazon or Walmart numbers but they do estimate. It's also just USA so you can probably add a lot more sales for other places.

@HackedLife I think it is more noteworthy that the game is overall more stable compared to Skyrim as far as the PS3 version is concerned. I finished playing it about a week ago, and after 120 hours the only glitches I came across were audio lag, a few instances of the camera getting stuck beneath the ground and pointing upward, and one instance of being unable to move after fateshifting an enemy on a hill. No freezing, and no broken quests. Although, I have heard of people experiencing a game-breaking bug in a story quest if you complete it's objectives before actually receiving the quest.
