Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning arrives February 7

38 Studios' debut role-playing game set to launch in North America early next year, European release to follow on February 10.

It's nearly time for a Reckoning. During its Gamescom press event today, Electronic Arts announced that Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will launch in North America on February 7, and across Europe on February 10.

Man will know neither the hour nor the day, but at least we can pin down the fiscal quarter.

Originally tagged with a fall 2011 release date, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will be the first game released from 38 Studios, the outfit founded by former MLB pitcher Curt Schilling. Reckoning began life at THQ's Big Huge Games under the code name "Project Mercury," but when the publisher revealed its intention to close the outfit, 38 Studios struck a deal to acquire both the project and the developer. At the time, EA Partners general manager David DeMartini said that EA will play "air traffic control for [role-playing game] fans" to make sure the game's launch didn't conflict with that of any BioWare titles.

The fantasy-themed RPG will feature a number of genre staples, from skeleton warriors and cave trolls to swords and sorcery. Players will be able to dictate the progression of their protagonists, choosing and developing a variety of skills that will determine an optimum play style as well as character classes.

I like how this sounds and it seems like that guy GETS whats been missing from rpg's as far as control wise with everything having been turned based, WoW style or overall just plain clunky gameplay when it comes do controlling your character. I just hope he can deliver on his vision.

Not sure if they are here to admire each other or to make games. They sounded like they formed the studio to have a bromance, not to make games. :)

Smart release date. Gamers will have been playing Dark Souls and Skyrim for a few months and Mass Effect doesn't come out until a month after this and the Witcher 2 is still up in the air. Very smart release date.

@FaYt2021 Agreed. I always though Fable, to play the cliche, was a bit of un unfulfilled promise. The concept was incredibly appealing, but the delivery was sorely lacking. Overly simplistic gameplay, shallow characters...never did it for me. This game seems like it took what Fable did right and fixed what it did wrong. That's what it looks like anyway. We'll see.

It's good to hear that is coming early next year. :)

"EA will play air traffic control for [role-playing game] fans to make sure the game's launch didn't conflict with that of any BioWare titles" That's funny, seeing as how Bioware hasn't released an RPG in over a decade.

Good move to push the release to 2012 - too many good games coming out this fall, it would have been lost in the mix.

I am much more interested in this then Skyrim or Mass Effect 3. And since it is a new studio I will definetly pick it up on day 1 if reviews are decent.

Bad time to release an RPG. Skyrim is one of those games that can keep you busy for months if not years and Mass Effect 3 is out in March for those that are already getting bored of Skyrim. This game looks great but it isn't known outside gaming sites such as this. It looks like it deserves a lot of attention but it probably won't get it. I like to support the developer but between Skyrim and Mass Effect 3 I really don't need to get it right away so I'll probably pick it up for half price down the line as well.

I am just going to say it, I can't stand Curt Schilling, but I'm also anti-Red Sox ;) but this still looks really impressive - glad we got a solid date out of them - this Fall is already packed with other great games, so I'm not upset about the delay.
