Kinect-less Xbox One doesn't sound very likely

The motion and voice control technology is "absolutely integral to Xbox One," Microsoft says.

One of the juiciest rumors circling around is that Microsoft will introduce a Xbox One bundle without Kinect later this year, presumably at a lower price point than $500. But new comments from Microsoft United Kingdom marketing director Harvey Eagle make that possibility sound pretty far-fetched.

"We're in it for the long haul," Eagle told the BBC today following the announcement of £30/$50 Xbox One price cut in the UK. "Kinect is absolutely integral to Xbox One."

Speaking with GameSpot earlier today, Eagle did not name-drop Kinect specifically, but said the complete Xbox One package--comprising the console and Kinect--is something Microsoft is committed to.

"We are just a few months into a generation that's going to last for many years to come. We see this therefore as a marathon," Eagle said.

Microsoft said previously that it has no plans to ever release Xbox One without Kinect because, in fact, Xbox One is Kinect. The two are fundamentally linked, he said in August.

"They are not separate systems. An Xbox One has chips, it has memory, it has Blu-ray, it has Kinect, it has a controller. These are all part of the platform ecosystem," Xbox executive Phil Harrison said at the time.

Microsoft also announced today a special $500 Xbox One Titanfall bundle that includes a black system, Kinect, a wireless controller (but not the specially branded Titanfall controller) and a one-month Xbox Live Gold subscription. Xbox Live Gold is required to play Titanfall.

It's Integral because they are so desperate to push it on everyone and make them have it in their home, whether they want it or not.

That simply doesn't make good business sense.

If someone doesn't want the Kinect, they should not be forced to have it by default.

Microsoft can spin this any way they want, and the apologists can spin this any way they want, but when you are forcing something on people without providing a choice, it falls to question WHY they aren't providing that choice.

If it can be turned off, then it's not absolutely integral. ** Eye-rolls **

Well, then I'm still not buying an Xbox One.

Kinect is only interesting for a first time user, like myself when I got a One, and yet, then and there, you figure out it's not that great. No matter what range you are from the TV, it can't always pick up your voice so it won't respond (it was worse for my brother than myself, but still), and even aside from that, using a controller, whether that be in game, or on the dashboard, is much faster than the Kinect other than a few aspects.

For instance, when I was playing Dead Rising 3, you'd think shaking the controller would be faster and easier than pressing a button, but it's not. And the options to shout out things are worthless. I wasn't going to plug the Kinect in when I got the One, and I didn't, but my brother wanted to try it so I did a few days later. Good thing is that I don't have to use it, so I always have it off.

Kinect is an inconvenience more than anything really. Anyways, I enjoy the Xbox One from what I've experienced with it, but the Kinect is certainly the downside to it. I do however like that you can hold up a card to it and it'll scan the code for you, which I haven't tried yet, but it's still cool; nothing worth 100 dollars more though.

"absolutely integral to XBO" - yet the system functions just as well with it turned off? Microsoft pls.

"we're in for the long haul" - i.e. we've been forcing our ill-conceived gimmick down your throats for the last 8 months and we're not going to stop until you're all crestfallen.

Then at least put some hd speakers in it so it could serve a purpose other than a door stop.

Integral to the console? Probably yes, as a business model.

Integral to the games? No. That's why people get pissed off.

As soon as sales start slowing down, im sure theyll remove the kinect. But by then, itll be too late

You know if they got rid of the Kinect and sold it at 300$ (due to the fact that it's inferior to the PS4) I might have actually considered buying it for my living room.

I'm kidding but right now Kinekt(however stupid I think it is) is the only thing that microsoft offers over Sony

Titanfall the next Xbone Flagship title yet doesnt even have kinect features or capabilities in it at all.

Way to force a peripheral on the consumer and then not include it in your flagship titles.

Talk about ulterior motives and lack of support for said "investment"

Microsoft just can't seem to "Kinect" with the average consumer anymore, can they?

divinejester

If they did put out non kinect bundles I feel it would all but kill any chance of the kinetic every being decent. I have to imagine most people would buy the kinetic-less one, prompting less games for it and it would end up much like this generation. Kinetic is just not a good enough feature by itself and the only way to get people to buy it is to force it on them. Its not just xbox, same thing with Nintendo and Sony. Most of the games I ended up playing for the wii and the ones I want to play for the wii u really don't need a wii mote or pad, and same thing with the move.

Gen007

I like how they'd rather give you a free $60 game to try and get you to buy one instead of dropping the kinect that most people aren't using anyway. I think MS wanted to emulate Nintendos success just a little too hard and its not gonna work out for them if they continue with this hardline.

I'm pretty sure this article will be part of the story on Microsoft's next 180 that they pull around the time of e3 2014 or 2015 when kinect is put out to pasture.

MADDjoe

Hmmm, thats what they said about DRM, not being able to resell your games and always online. All I know is that I won't even think about buying an xbone until they get rid of the stupid camera I don't want. And if its so integral, why did they program it so you wouldn't have to connect the camera if you don't want to use it. I'm not wasting money on stuff I don't want.

chipsych

Should have been a basic design choice. The Kinect has always been and always be a gimmick. If people want to pay for it then fine. However, it should not be forced on the consumer in the name of innovation when it does not offer any.

MJ-X
MJ-X

No matter what people say Kinect is not part of the system, If your system can boot without it and the included controller supports menu navigation and gaming out of the box then Kinect will always be a peripheral that is shoved down customer throats and should be optional.a couple of my friends who got it just left it inside the box and shoved in the closet without even testing it.

deathstream
deathstream

This is not news.  We all know this.  MS says this all the time.  Kinect is NOT going away.  If you take away Kinect, you end up with a machine that is the same price as the PS4, but less powerful AND less capable.

@TheWatcher000 dont want it dont buy it no1 is forcing you to buy it lol. sure you can argue it drives price up abit but to say your forced to buy something because they offer it as a product lol you could even argue that you dont want or like the idea and would like a kinectless option but you forced to buy it lol?

jecomans

@dom7766  People are dumb fucks for wanting the option of not paying for something they are going to leave turned off? Please, come back when the planet you're from discovers logic.

NTM23
NTM23

@anshanlord  Not necessarily. I mean, it may not be as good as it (I don't know), and you'd have to pay for it, but there is a PlayStation Camera, which does the same stuff, pretty much.

TheWatcher000
TheWatcher000

@divinejester

Maybe the point isn't to have the Kinect be decent, with decent games.

Considering the capabilities of that thing, it seems far more useful for an agenda that doesn't have anything to do with games, than with games itself.  There is no question that good games could probably be made for Kinect, but I do not think that is Microsoft's main focus for it.

Gen007
Gen007

@divinejester Thing is the Kinect is still getting crappy games regardless of the fact that every x1 comes with one. Its a great piece of tech it really is but they cant force it on people they just cant. If they really wanted to build some interest in the connect they'd devote a major studio or something to making a AAA non broken gimmick kinect game. That's how they get people to want one. Making people pay a hundred for something they have no interest in and likely wont use is far from the right way to go about it.

oscuracorazon
oscuracorazon

@chipsych yes but they know what the consumer does NOT want and they expect you to buy it anyway LOL

Zero_Nitrous

@chipsych-The nazis at Microsoft think they should be able to think and decide for people.  Eliminating choice, and options.  They are paying for it in sales and bad PR.

TheWatcher000

@deathstream @MJ-X

Why are they idiots for not using something that they have no use for?

I hope Microsoft actually pays you for the idiocy you post, because I'd hate to think you'd willingly make yourself look so stupid for free.

Your tunnel logic makes no sense.

Put down the pom poms and actually THINK, for once.

MJ-X
MJ-X

@deathstream @MJ-X

Sure they are, they threw out a good 100 bucks right there.

They should have bought a ps4 just like i did, kinda beats the point of using an Xbone if u drop Kinect as it will end up just as you said below; priced the same as ps4 yet "less powerful AND less capable".

Zero_Nitrous
Zero_Nitrous

@deathstream @MJ-X-They are idiots, because they have the ability to decide for themselves what they want?  You don't think they researched what the Kinect could do beforehand?
