Killzone HD hits October 23

Sony offering Guerrilla's 2004 shooter as $15 stand-alone download on PlayStation Network next month; game boasts 720p graphics at 30fps with trophies.

Guerrilla Games' 2004 PlayStation 2 shooter Killzone is coming to the PlayStation 3 next month. The company announced recently on the PlayStation Blog that Killzone HD will be released on the PlayStation Network on October 23 for $15.

Killzone gets an HD face-lift next month.

The game has been remastered in high definition, boasting 720p graphics at 30 frames per second. Additionally, Killzone HD supports MSAA (multisample anti-aliasing) filtering, sharper textures, and "higher quality" sound effects.

In addition, Killzone HD features a full set of trophies for players to collect, including tasks like picking up 10,000 rounds of ammunition for the STA-52 LAR rifle and finishing a level with a hit ratio of above 90 percent.

Gamers who want even more Killzone can pick up the Killzone Trilogy, also due out on October 23. The compilation pack includes the original Killzone, as well as PS3 games Killzone 2 and Killzone 3. Further, all multiplayer map packs for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 will be included with the Killzone Trilogy. It will retail for $40.

love  the first  one 15$ I'm sold!

yeah the HD treatment may actually clear up the main flaws of the first game, it was a great game hidden beneath an inconsistent framerate and sound, and grainy graphics. I am all for this

This is excellent news, i loved the first Killzone but you could tell the PS2 was struggling to run it at times. My main memory of Killzone was the superb secondary fire modes on the weapons. the shotgun attachment on the Helghast rifle was a brutal weapon

OR

BFGU with added missions, more story, and levels. Better controls...

Yep like most said the problem with the original was just technical issues. Killzone 2 and 3 are one of the most technically impressive games out there, this will be nothing less.

Sweet, the framerate and bad textures were pretty much the only problem when this game first came out. 15 bucks is a good price, I remember this game being fairly long.

i'm not entirely sure that i'm going to get this game, why not just get the trilogy? sony's been tossing out a lot of those lately.

this is great and im glad that they are doing this, cause i own the game on ps2 and the game has a lot of frame rate issues, but i im sure with the power of the ps3 they could put the game in 1080p, but 720p is fine

Too bad the gameplay will not see real improvements. Killzone 2 & 3 are awesome, but let's be honest, the first one is nowhere near them. Killzone 1 needs a remake, not a HD port.

I beta tested the online multiplayer back when the PSU was cool and I loved it.  The PS2 could definitely not handle this game.  I hope the multiplayer stays intact and playable...

I'm more than happy with this. The only aspect that ever annoyed me with the original was the below 30 FPS--what was it at? 15? 20? So I'm more than happy with this re-release. Every other improvement is a bonus in my book.

You know what. I already have Killzone 1, 2, 3 and Liberation but I am buying this DAY ONE.

Also 15 bucks for the remastered Killzone 1 is fine, thats for people who buy games on the internet, obviously if you don't have the game series you would get the collection.

so ps3 is now starting to utilize anti aliasing in games? where the hell was this from the start? one of the dumbest things i've seen.

$15 for just Killzone is a bit overpriced (especially when you can buy the trilogy for $40).  But then, most of the stuff in the Playstation Store is grossly overpriced.

The only one I've played in KZ3 and that was enough to make me never want to play a FPS again.

Trilogy sold  even though I have KZ1 and KZ2.  WOW $40.00 dollars for 3 games for less than the price of 1 game.  NOW this is how pricing should be.

Still I would have paid more for KZ1 if they added some EXTRA features.  3D, Move support.  Remade the whole game over fixing some problems here and there. Added some levels. bring back Online Maps,  would have been worth $40 by itself.

Also, I wonder if Brad Shoemaker (the one that reviewed it on here back in 04) will be doing a quick look over at Giantbomb. I imagine if there is going to be one, it'll be Jeff that does it, and that's fine, but I hope it's Brad... and Jeff!

That's awesome. At first I was a little disappointed it's not going to be 60 frames, but in the end, from what it seems they're doing, it'll be OK. I wonder if some of the nasty bugs (which I found to be one of the only problems with the original) will be fixed. The first Killzone is definitely the one closest to my heart when it comes to any of the Killzone games, even if it isn't technically the best.

Was 1080p @60fps for a PS2 game too much to ask for?

We'll see. Second and third are wonderful neat shooters, first had potential but was mediocre (quite a shame; because I mean it: LOTS of potential)

I have all three games but I'm interested in seeing the HD remake. It would be cool if they fixed all the bugs that the original had. The bundle is def worth the money, but would be really cool if they threw the psp game liberation into the mix. That is the only one that I do not own.

So nostalgic. I remember the days of playing the original on playstation. It seems longer than 8 years ago. I'm not sure what it was exactly that turned me on to Killzone. Simply the name most likely. That point in my life I loved unloading some led into foes. Actually... I still love it.

Ravenlore_basic

@bluebird08 If they rebuilt it from the ground up they could have gotten it to 1080P at 60fps but they would mean that the game would cost more... say $40.00 to $60.00 dollars.

Ravenlore_basic
Ravenlore_basic

@DanBal76 I have to agree.   I think they would have sold well even at $40- $50.00 dollars.  A true remake with new Engine would have been great.

bluebird08

@DanBal76 the frame rate is what kinda made the gameplay suck, so 30FPS will be a huge improvement.

grey_fox1984
grey_fox1984

@DanBal76 The frame rate boost will make a HUGE difference in how the game plays. Killzone 1 was a great game, with the same weighty feel that was perfected in 2&3, the only real problem was that the framerate was atrocious, which in turn, made targeting kind of nightmare in larger firefights. I'm just speculated (as I have not played the upcoming HD port), but I'm willing to bet the gameplay will noticeably benefit from the update.

Nuno50Nuno

@DanBal76 this IS a  remake, it doest have the problems of the ps2 version (like framerate) and improved controls.

theshonen8899

@Codester_41 I feel the same way about HD releases as I feel about Blu-Ray movie rereleases. HD releases let people who missed out on the game the first time around get it with superior visuals for a very cheap price. Most of these releases are handled by studios designed specifically for rereleases like BluePoint games, so big studios like Guerilla games can still focus on the next Killzone.

doolindesperado
doolindesperado

@Codester_41 I agree.  I thought at first the remasters were a good idea.  Now, not so much.  I wish they would put those resources into new games.

Kickable

@bluebird08  @DanBal76 he's not too specific and I think being burned out on FPS in general at the time helped, but I kinda agree with him it was average at the best of times as far as me actually having fun.  the gameplay, I didn't have any issues with anything else.  I have not played 2 & 3 but not based on what I thought of part 1, heard they're pretty great, just don't have a console.  It'd probably take a complete remake like he says for me to give 1 a try, but I'm still burnt out on FPS, even on some highly praised current ones.

As far as visuals I can suffer ugly graphics and occasional frame drops easily if the rest of presentation is done well.  I used to dread the day FPS games wouldn't wow me anymore but similar to my old excitement over action movies it couldn't last forever.  I guess I could've agreed with him in a lot fewer words, but now I'm too lazy to sort this out

 @grey_fox1984  @DanBal76

what was the framerate for KZ on PS2? because 30fps isn't really much of boost. this is just a half ass lazy HD port. old game like this could easily do 60fps on PS3.

Ravenlore_basic
Ravenlore_basic

@Nuno50Nuno  @DanBal76 ... NO its not. its a port with some correction to issues that it had.

Sony decided that it would not be financially feasible to pay for such a REMAKE so they went with a port.  That IS too bad as I really liked Killzone.

DanBal76
DanBal76

 @Nuno50Nuno

Sorry fellow gamer, but you don't know the meaning of a remake in the videogame world. GameCube's version of Resident Evil: a remake (completely new graphics, new areas, new gameplay features). Killzone HD for the PS3: the PS2 game with 720p graphics, anti-aliasing and better frame rate. Improved from the original? Sure, but that doesn't make it a remake, just an HD port.

Ravenlore_basic
Ravenlore_basic

@doolindesperado  @Codester_41 .. I agree somewhat.  If they do a good job on a game like Killzone which suffered last gen. do to technical difficulties.  still for an update they should have done more, and charged more.
