Killzone 3 shooting up PS3 in 3D

Sony and Guerrilla Games adding full depth-of-field tech to direct sequel in interplanetary shooter franchise; release date TBA.

by

Later this year, Sony plans to introduce stereoscopic 3D functionality to all PlayStation 3s through a firmware update, seen most prominently in Ubisoft's critically panned, but commercially successful, Avatar. Today, the publisher said that one of its biggest first-party franchises will be among the first to make use of that new depth-of-field technology, as Sony announced Guerrilla Games' Killzone 3 will run in full 3D.

Killzone 3 adds a new dimension to the Helghan threat.

Along with announcing the 3D functionality, Sony's official PlayStation Blog offered a handful of details on what gamers can expect from Killzone 3, which will serve as a direct sequel to 2009's critically lauded Killzone 2. In last year's title, the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance took the fight to the Helghan homeworld, where they achieved a measure of success against the Nazi-esque civilization that invaded Earth in the 2004 original.

As detailed by Guerrilla Games managing director Hermen Hulst, the Amsterdam-based studio will be fleshing out the Helghan homeworld with "more enemy types, massive environments, and a broader vision of the planet Helghan and its many terrains." The broadened environments, Hulst noted, were to address gamers' issues with the corridor feel of Killzone 2.

Hulst also detailed a couple of new features that will be introduced into the series. Much like Bungie's Halo: Reach, Killzone 3 will introduce jetpack gameplay to the sci-fi shooter series. With the jetpack, gamers gain the ability to thrust skyward for a limited period of time, affording them access to heretofore unreachable locations and opening up the possibility of aerial gunfights. Additionally, the game will include a new "brutal melee" attack, which factors into close-range combat.

Sony has not yet announced a release window for Killzone 3.

@acdarkknight LOL @ you little buddy! I mentioned the rumored price of under $100 how long ago??? So you get back on here after the OFFICIAL announcement at E3, pretending that you knew this price point the entire time and putting Kinect in quotation marks as if correcting me??? It's been referred to as Project Natal since it first emerged, only until the announcement at E3. Get real little girl! So once again I've devoted my time to responding to the vomit you pour out through you're keyboard. Shame on me for giving you the time of day. Have a good one! Not really, I hope you break you're wrists sometime soon. BYE!

@fi3ldsy Thanks for coming out. Now its E3 and even Gamestop is posting the "kinect" at 149.99. Before you look like an idiot again, I suggest not being such an immature child and maybe doing some research. Once again, Thanks for being a tool! :)

holographics is the only way to go!! 3d doesn't work for me I'm imbalanced visionwise or something, so no 3d version for me even though I would love to, you can imagine how irritated I was by avatar.

BRING IT ON!!!! I know that there will be some disagreement. but I really do think that Killzone 2 is the best game on the PS3. My opinion....sorry to all the Modern Warfare2 diehards. I'm speaking strictly about the campaign. I've played it 4 times and still LOVE every second. So that's my 2 cents.

before anyone stones the game to death... HAVE you tried 3D at all? I have seen some TVs for $$$$ which I CAN NOT buy. But I have passed on HD TVs till I got my PS3 well it was a 24 inch wide screen moniter for 200.00 this last January. WHY because I know that LCD screens do not really show HD content fully. I want a 240Hz OLED 3D TV by 2012. I will wait for the price to be about $1,000.00 and make sure that it works great with BluRay.

Can't wait...., and luckily my eye site is normal (@ cf_Kage), and not overdeveloped for 3D. Ow wait...., I'm looking 3D now in my 3D world, were (nearly) everybody has 3D vision. Does this mean????? Yes it does, that we all are used to watchin in 3D. Typical (moron)!! If you have problem seeing depth, it probably means you have a lazy eye

I assume I'm getting old and stubborn... hehe, I think I'll stick with the "2D" version. Anyhow, it must be a hell of an experience to play such kick ass shooter like Killzone on the 3D technology if it continues the evolution of its predecessor.

I'm just hoping that the story is more captivating than the last one. Good game but the story was boring, and that was the only thing missing from the game. I have high hopes for this next one :)

Does anyone know whether the 3D TV's being released have a depth setting? Where you can maximize depth from standard? The reason I ask this is because my eyes are quite used to 3D and the convergences of 3D, and so they can handle a bigger depth than your typical person could. Since 3D is for the masses, I'm guessing the depth won't be set to extreme levels, as I watched a 3D demo at a store the other day, and wasn't blown away by the depth perceived, until something was meant to actually come at you (i.e the rest only slightly landed off the screen) I'm hoping if not, the games themselves would have a setting EDIT: 3D in its true form allows you to see in and out of the screen, as you would in real life. It is the method of cross-eye/parallel viewing, that either gives you more depth in (parallel), or out of the screen (cross eye) Viewing with glasses gives you both at the same time as you aren't forced to use one method. You naturally go cross eyed when viewing objects close, and naturally move your eyes in line with each other to view distances.

"Anyway the pricing for the tvs are rediculous, what a rip off. AND GUYS IT ISN'T A NEW EXPERIENCE AND IT IS THE GAMEPLAY, CONTENT, AND STORY THAT COUNTS. Not projected images." Oh, you don't say? Well...maybe you should f*cking read the article in GamePro that this is from, because Guerrilla states "3D is just a small part of it. If the rest of our game sucked, and we didn't do EVERY other part of the game right, then you'd just have a sucky game in 3D" So yeah, the guys and gals at Guerrilla are WAY ahead of your knee jerk, pea brained assumptions.

now THIS is the sort of successful application I had in mind for 3D games. Killzone was the best shooter I ever played anywhere for it's fierce AI, and a sequel in 3D is a no brainer. Can't wait.

Willy-Wilks_777 Posted May 25, 2010 2:34 pm PT "3D is nothing but a gimmick. The image is only projected closer at you. THAT'S IT. You might as well get a magnifying glass and point it towards the tv and call that 3D." Huh? So it has nothing to do with the depth and convergence of true dual stereoscopic 3D images alternating to the left & right eyes at 60Hz each, using a 120Hz display? You say all I need is a single magnifying glass to point at the TV and look through, and I can get a 3D effect because the trick to 3D is that the image is "projected" closer to me? Cool, thanks for the tip man - you just saved me some money. ... or you're grossly misinformed. No offense man, but go to a friend's house and try something like Resident Evil 5 or Arkham Asylum (gorgeous in 3D) on a big screen using a pair of real active shutter 3DVision glasses, investigate the technology, then re-assess your strange "it's just a closer projected image" theory. Get a game well-tuned for 3D, stick two healthy eyeballs behind two active LCD shutters (the 'stereoscopic' part) and trick your brain into enjoying a 3D effect via cleverly adjusted depth and convergence. Or do like Willy and duct tape a magnifying glass to your face.

3D is one of those things that is supposed to be futuristic but just feels like something from the 1950's it'll never be that good and it'll never be that convenient, it'll just push up prices and development time aka gran turismo 5.

im actually quite excited about 3D at home. i think 3D is actually quite awesome. It's still not the virtual reality that i wanted (do you remember the old VR arcade games with the helmets.... imagine that with todays graphics with something like doom 4!) HDTV was the same... i was an early adopter and got one at the launch of the 360. i never regreted it! many people are only just getting HDTV. What people need to realise is that this is an optional extra... not a new standard. If you can't afford a new 3D-HDTV then you can still play as is... it's not a problem. The PC has been touting 3D gaming for a couple of years with nvidia cards now.... it hasnt caused any problems! chill! (and save up for a 3D TV!)

Geon106

To the people on the debate about "3D is dying" and "3D is the future" Well to be honest, its too early to tell if it'll catch on. 3D movies come and go every decade so this could be another fad. That and most people are still only just taking on High Definition. I mean in the UK there are only about 20 HD channels, so I think that needs to take off before people invest in 3D TV's. However, that being said the technology behind 3D has improved hugely from the days of the red and blue glasses. Take a look at NVIDIA's 3D Vision. Its not perfect, but when it works well, it really does work well :)

If they improve that awful loading time and as long as I can choose between normal and 3D I don't care. Give me more carnage Sony!

xchiefmegadethx Posted May 25, 2010 11:06 am "oh god 3d...3d suxxxxx 3d is already dieing at the movies,it is so not the future! trust sony to try and push 3d in games" Oh yeah, 3D is really dying at the movies eh? So obviously you think movies like 'Avatar' and 'How to Train Your Dragon' suffered because they released both 2D and stereoscopic 3D versions of the film? Haha, right. And I promise you lots and lots of people will see the new Shrek, Tron Legacy, Toy Story 3 and Green Lantern in 3D, among the dozen other films offering a 3D edition into 2011. As with movies, some games will clearly excel in 3D while others will be merely average. 3D is what it is: a 35 year old technology in the midst of a popularity resurgence thanks to today's stunning CG effects and picture grade available in both theaters and at home on powerful displays. And c'mon guys, obviously all these 3D games will ship with perfectly normal 2D modes as well.

I'm not looking forward to Jet packs, in all the games they come in they....arent implemented very well, you just use them to escape or to find a good sniping point, "and opening up the possibility of aerial gunfights." this isnt going to happen.

why is everyone complaining so much... im sure you can play this game without the 3d. so adding the 3d just makes the game even better.
