Killzone 3 Multiplayer Hands-On

We check out the new Guerrilla Warfare and Operation modes from Guerrilla’s futuristic squad-based shooter.

Yes, Killzone 3 is a great-looking game, but what does it feel like to play? Developer Guerrilla was showing off two new multiplayer modes at Gamescom 2010, both of which add a unique twist to familiar gameplay ideas. A host of improvements have also been implemented under the hood, with Guerrilla promising a rewritten matchmaking system, better bots, and improved integration with Killzone.com.

The first of the new modes is called Operation. It's a story-driven affair that promises to give “five minutes of fame” to competitors online. Our hands-on began with a short cutscene, which explained the premise of the match. In our match we had to defend the entrance to a silo, which had two highlighted areas for planting explosives on it. The opposing team came at us in full force, so we had to take tactical positions on a rickety-looking staircase to see them off. Though we were unable to try it in our demo, Guerrilla promised an improved voice chat system, which intelligently prioritises team talk, allowing you to easily get the upper hand on the opposition.

During our firefight we noticed that the controls had been tuned considerably, with character movement feeling faster. It’s not Modern Warfare fast by any means, but it does answer some of the fan feedback that called out the sometimes sluggish feel of the characters. Our match was suitably action-filled, with the opposing team throwing grenades, wreaking all kinds of havoc on our defence. Sadly, we lost our battle, and the silo doors were blown wide open. Interestingly, any destroyed objectives remain that way for the remainder of that match, so you always have visible evidence of your success or failure. Once an objective has been completed, a new cutscene begins that highlights your new tasks, which feature the top individual player’s characters from the previous round.

The second mode we played was Guerrilla Warfare, which is a form of team deathmatch. The emphasis is on close-quarters combat, and a new spawn point system has been implemented. Scattered around each map are waypoints indicating potential spawn points. We were able to run up to these and capture them, allowing us to spawn much closer to the enemy when killed. Of course, these can easily be captured by the enemy as well, so there is an element of strategy involved in deciding which points to take and which to defend. This mode also allowed us to check out some of the improved character classes. There are five in total, with six weapons and abilities on offer for each class. They are tactician, infiltrator, engineer, and marksman. We tried our hand at field medic, which has been substantially overhauled. One of the field medic’s new abilities is the minidrone, which is a small drone that you can launch in a match. It follows you around, helping to defend your character while you heal others. It also has the ability to revive you when you're on the verge of death, which proved extremely useful during our play-through. However, it works for only a limited time, so well-timed minidrone launches are key to making it through a battle alive.

Though we weren’t able to try them out, exoskeletons and improved jetpacks are now available to use in the multiplayer. In a video we were shown, exoskeletons were being used to mow down several enemies with ease, firing off hundreds of rounds of bullets at once. They’re not entirely infallible though, and we saw some well-placed sniper shots take out the pilots of them swiftly. The jetpacks' range has been increased vertically, allowing you to fly much higher and pick off enemies from afar. Other additions include an increased ranking system to level 45, more than 100 medals, and a round-based ribbon system. The often brutal melee kills from the single-player game have transitioned over to the multiplayer, allowing you to stab your opponents in the eyes or slice their throats at will.

No, not in the face!

Killzone 3 looks great, and the Phyrrus City map we played was full of detail. The destroyed urban environment was littered with open roads, wrecked buildings, and plenty of tight corridors for close-encounters action. Killzone 2 was a graphical showpiece for the PlayStation 3, and even at this stage its sequel is looking to live up to the same standards. Killzone 3 is due for release February 2011. i hope this doesn't turnout like cod, where the single player is just additional content that half the people don't even play. the multiplayer looks great, but i hope they don't loose focus with the story mode.

These vehicles are going to crush BFBC2, Killzone 3 is looking amazing. Instant one-day buy.

i think that the multiplayer part is cool, but there should be more single player. Not just ten hours but 15 or 20. There also should be more than just shooting. I mean call of duty was good and still is good, but the co-op and single player need more attention

The graphical ability of the PS3 is really going to come into it's own over the next 12 months with these immense titles being released, Killzone 3, and GT5 are going to change the current benchmark of what a quality game should look like, I do how ever believe that all future FPS titles would benefit most from destructable enviroments, fully customisable characters / classes / weapons and as many players slammed into the server as the engine will allow 64 / 128 / 256 players FTW!!!

it's nice to see a more improve mature GG. i hope they have a similar customization and skill tree from mag. speaking of clans they should have bonus support for example if you're playing as a medic you give extra health to your clanmates well if there is a health bar another example if you're playing as a engineer you have the ability to destroy vehicles faster and give extra fire power. speaking of camping if you still play KZ2's mp there's no camping the game modes pretty much are straight forward unless you're playing search and destroy but you have to protect your objectives that's not even camping. can't wait keep it up sony.

@dark-warmachine agreed, I don't see why not, other than not wanting to look like other games. But a smart developer would take inspiration from another games success. Its just a game mode, not like you're making a clone game

Killzone wont allow camping spots on maps, its impossible to camp in MAG thats why the 10 year old CoD fanboys hate it. Being that Killzone is a game made for gamers and not 10 year olds it shouldnt have any places to camp.....lets hope at least....

M0RZINGER
M0RZINGER

All fps online will have campers CoD made camping easy and effective with all the killstreaks and thermal sniper campers going prone Halo reduced campers by having uber high health And I hope KZ3 reduces camping by making a big push for more teamplay with their supposedly reworked class system, the changes to the field medic are already sounding pretty cool

They need to have COD/CS's Search and Destroy no respawn for a gametype in Killzone 3. That and MW2's Demolition, they're just too damn fun not to have in any Shooter game.

Not only did this relieve my stress of thinking GG was making KZ3 a COD clone but it also satisfying to see that some really good game modes are being included. Thank God ^.^

@trav19882 I understand full and well that there is camping in every single online game. My problem was that in Killzone it was kind of worse in my point of view because of the spawn grenade ability. You would just have everyone spawn camp at times especially on Radec Academy. ( don't even let me get started with that) The point I'm trying to make it a bit more balance because the whole point was people picking classes to help the team out as whole. Not everyone using the Tactician with the boost ability for easy run throw spawn grenade and camp. I'm sure Killzone 3 will be great also.

Killzone is always one step ahead of the other FPS franchises it seems. This one is going to be pretty epic!

@ kittygus no its not, its a mix of story mode and online MP. the five minutes of fame means you get to be in the scene of the story. the game winning kill cam in MW2 shows someone shooting thin air and the opponent dying a meter away.

OreoPoptart = idiot or 360 fanboy wishing he had a ps3 :) and Colonel-Snake there is camping in every multiplayer game..that is just the way people play cause they dont wanna get killed running around which i also complain about campers but its no use they will always be camper ha..Killzone 2 is the shieet and 3 will be even better
