Killspace surfaces with Yars' Revenge

Former Obsidian and Pandemic devs reimagining Atari 2600 best-seller as downloadable game with local co-op play for Xbox 360, PS3, PC; release set for early next year.

The first project to come to light from Killspace Entertainment is not the rumored adaptation of 1979's Apocalypse Now after all. However, it is a new take on an entertainment property from around the same time.

Yars' Revenge is the first announced title from Killspace Entertainment.

Atari has announced Yars' Revenge for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, a Killspace-developed reimagining of the 1981 Atari 2600 best-seller. The game will put players in control of an unnamed member of an insectoid alien species called the Yar. After surviving a brainwashing attempt by the opposing Qotile empire, the Yar takes flight to get her vengeance.

A downloadable game, Yars' Revenge has been set for release in the first quarter of 2011. Details are scant, but the revamp will feature an anime-inspired aesthetic, as well as local cooperative play and multiple endings.

Formed in 2009, Killspace boasts talent from a number of big-name developers, including Obsidian Entertainment, Pandemic Studios, EALA, and Red 5. The studio's LinkedIn profile indicates that it is working on "an original IP with a major publisher and a licensed IP to be announced." The profile also indicates that the studio's focus is on first- and third-person "action, horror, and sci-fi" games.

@kvan33 Because most of the FPS playing kids nowadays would b*** and moan that Pong is just too hard

everything is a remake nowadays, movies, tv shows, and video games. Just gotta roll with the punches. Some are good, most are bad. Hopefully this will fall under the 'good' catagory.

Wow, what could possibly translate from the original game into this gen? Yars Revenge was such a simplistic game. Why don't they just remake pong?

@parkurtommo Actually Atari already prepared some decent title(s) like upcoming The Witcher 2" & Test Drive Unlimited 2". :) and also don't forget they also have Neverwinter" series which is pretty cool.

@fLaMbOaStiN -- ...really? I'm going to assume you don't try most downloadable games, then, because there are dozens of excellent titles out on XBLA and PSN. Take another look and see what you might be missing out on -- you'll be doing yourself a favor.

Nice to see the Pandemic folk continuing on in the industry. Their games are among some of my favorite for multiple reasons. Going to watch this one closely.

@Phrykshun I agree with you. I still own my copy of the original, great game, spent many hours on it.

@fLaMbOaStiN That's too bad, you're missing out on greats like Castle Crashers, Braid, and Perfect Dark.

I wonder why they turned the fly-looking character from the original into a sexy anime lady with no pants. Wait, no, I don't wonder why.

Lost my interest when i read "Downloadable Title." Only DLC i've ever been satisfied with (besides add-on DLCs) would be Battlefield 1943.

I'm sorry, atari doesnt make their games but they clearly don't know who to work with. The last games iv played published by atari were real ****! cronicals of riddick assault on dark athen and panzers cold war, WAKE UP ATARI U USED TO BE GOOD

@nailfoot - Oh yeah! Adventure! another Classic! Howabout Circus Atari too? That was fun, the guy would dance on the red balloons! I remember 'swinging' the paddle controller to get to the balloons at the very top :) Oh and about Adventure - Can you remember all the dragon's names? :) The colours were Red, Green and Yellow..and I hated that damn bat! Anyone remember the dragon's names? First prize is a two thumbs up :)

Ummm when's the last time atari came out with a good game? I think it was in the 80's?

I remember the original Atari game came with a comic book. It wasn't like this. This is just something else from my childhood to be re-made and pooped on.

If it's fun, it's fun, but the other bits don't seem too encouraging. I mean, we're talking about taking a classic that had you playing as a mutant space-fly, and remaking it as a giant robot anime-esque shooter that has you playing as (what appears to be) a young girl, one I assume won't be devouring barriers and projectile vomiting energy missiles...

ill say this guys.. you got the source on me.. thats it.. yars revenge will definetely be a pickup.. growing up i had a 2600 and this was one of the few games i ahd for it... i then went to a colecovision and pwned some face hard in an origional copy of donkey kong jr. (i still have it btw, box n cartridge)

Well, given the pedigree of the devs we can be sure of one thing. The game will no doubt be buggy as can be and get little to no after release support.

I did not care for the remake that was done on Haunted House. Hopefully, however, Yars' Revenge will make a better transition.

Okay...... I remember Yar's Revenge when trying out an old Atari compilation of games. This is...interesting....

Almost, but not quite, entirely UNlike Yar's Revenge. What's the story here? They couldn't think of a name for some of their aliens so they just paid Atari $50 for the rights? @nailfoot - you win a magic dot!

:::Yar's Revenge was good on the Atari 2600. One of the more memorable titles. or try Vanguard, possibly my fav. or another Star Raiders, but that was better on the old Atari 800/XL Good times::: How about Adventure? Your character was a square, but dang it was fun!

I played the heck out of this back in the early 80s! I still have the cartridge buried in my dad's (or mom's?) basement somewhere. I bet this game would still be fun on an Atari 2600 em...uh, I better not say.

This was one of my first games ever, and I played the crap out of it. this game will be bought on nostalgia alone, especially if they can include the original. they wouldn't even need to beef up the graphics.
