Killer Is Dead off to slow start in Japan

PS3 version of Grasshopper Manufacture action game at fifth place on Media Create sales chart, just below new and recent 3DS titles from Namco Bandai, Capcom, and Nintendo.

The upcoming action game Killer Is Dead has launched early in Japan with average sales numbers.

Killer Is Dead failed to reach the top in the Japanese sales chart.

According to the Media Create chart update from July 29 to August 4, the PlayStation 3 version of Killer Is Dead sold 17,709 units in its debut week. The Xbox 360 version was at 36th place.

Killer Is Dead was beaten by four 3DS games, one of which was a new title called Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life, which sold 119,154 units. The three others were Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies (40,203), Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (32,537), and Friend Collection: New Life (21,313).

Killer Is Dead will be out in North America for the Xbox 360 and PS3 on August 27. Launch copies of the game will come with an art book, a bonus Gigolo mission, a new story mission, and in-game outfits for supporting characters Vivienne and Mika. The Japanese and Asian versions (with English voice-overs and subtitles) are out now.

Love Suda. Probably because he tries to do something somewhat different with each of his games. I'm not going to say they are all very different from each other though.

But at least his games can provide new experiences for gamers. Something I don't think is all that common nowadays...

I like Suda51 he's got that I don't give a shit vibe. Lol in No More More Heroes you even had to take a shit to save.

Maybe it's because the Japanese are used to over-the-top combination of violence and sex, something I've experienced in the manga and anime culture for decades. I need to see reviews for this game ASAP.

Well I'll be a +1 in North America.

That's not too surprising. Suda's stuff has always been too freaky for the masses and appeals more to the niche gamer. If KiD breaks even it will have been a success in its own right.

I don't like this suda guy. If this game doesn't sell well in Japan forget it selling at all in NA

Maybe if they did some marketing and advertising for the game... I never even knew this game was in production until like a month ago.

Lmao, people rather wanted than something called Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life than Killer is Dead. Family friendly products is the shit!

The thing with Suda games, is they are a blend of Japanese, American, and many other styles!

I freaking hate how people get so obssessed with culture, "Japanese culture", "western culture", etc etc. It's like they accept it if games from a certain country do the same thing over and over again, because it's "Culture" and that's to be expected.

In a Suda51 game, you get over-the-top violence of American games, over-the-top-sexuality/heavy-handed storytelling of Japanse games, and a bunch of other cool influences, such as American film noir, Tarentino-grindhouse action, and hell, even Mexican lucha!

Suda51 games take the best bits of everywhere and put them in one game.

We call them "niche" because we are used to games that only take advantage of a particular taste, and none others.

Can anyone say they don't like all of the individuals elements? What isn't cool about big boobs, over-the-top-action, heavy philosophical dialogue, Mexican wrestling, and self-refferential humor?

Suda 51 games are the Bohemian Rhapsody of the gaming industry. They are weird, confusing, and seemingly a mixup of randomness, but they're awesome and you can help but sing along!

....Except for Lollipop Chainsaw... Sorry Suda, but that game sucked...

I don't understand why more people don't give Suda 51 a chance. The games are so damn unique and special to play, Shadows of the Damned  is my personal favourite. I will pick this up when it releases in NA.

I wonder what they're saying about it. I kind of have high hopes for this game... looked like Suda was making up for that piece of shit Lollipop Chainsaw.

Ether way I'd rather see Suda 51 find their niche, than go bankrupt.  Better for there to be more teams making games than less.

Another failure from Suda 51. Not a surprise since most their games are mediocre and weird

Not a big shock that Killer is Dead is going slow. JP don't like Suda 51 games look at no more heroes and others they do well in NA/EU but not very well at all in JPN less your a haf nude chick with a chainsaw :P

I can see why it's off to a slow start... the art looks boring, and the game play generic.

as long as the controls and fighting feels good it could be ok. Only hack n slash i really have enjoyed were NG1 and NG2, I have only played the demo of NG3 razors edge but the controls felt a little off to me

VGobbsesser

It's a Suda 51 title; no surprise there. Anyway, if I recall (and don't quote me on this), his last few games have sold better (if not by much) in American than in Japan. At the very least, I know that both No More Heroes titles did. Could be the same for this one.

I bought the hype back in the day,

His games are terrible.

Never again.

Weird =/= good.

Bad controls,

inconsistent storytelling,

Dated graphics,

Not revolutionary.

Devil May Cry Clone. Looks pretty good but the environment looks so empty and boring.

Looks like the 10 milllion other games like it that came before it. And, when will Japan get a NEW cut/slice sound. They have used the same exact sound since the freakin 80's. Seriously. It's no wonder I can't stand most Anime....

From what I've seen of this so far, it doesn't look like it will disappoint Suda games fans.   Thinking it will hold it's own.  Anxiously awaiting the release date myself.

I would make a joke but it looks like the title of the game covers it pretty well.

This game looks weird and as good as Shadow of the Damned,  please take my money!

Suda51 can't make a good game on his own, he needs someone to control his insanity and make an actual game out of his idea. Like he did with Akira Yamaoka.

Warlord_Irochi

It's Suda51. His games are not for everyone; either you like them or your hate them. Simple as that

Suda do love his assassins, assassin organisations and killing to get to the top while being teased by chicks....

Did i forget something about his formula?

@dariusq Lol, I just realized that this game, which has such a non-kid friendly title, can be written as KiD.

@LtReviews I liked Lollipop Chainsaw. If anything held it back its because they didn't go far enough over the top.

@LtReviews I thought No More Heroes and No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle were two of the best games for the Wii (let alone the 7th generation of games).

@killmoore

You obviously haven't played many Suda51 games.

The gameplay is sometimes great, sometimes bad, but never generic.

 Except for lollipop chainsaw...

imetamonster

@Morphine_OD Akira Yamaoka has been with Suda since they started working together...

He helped with NMH2, Shadows of the damned, and lollipop chainsaw.

Though with lollipop chainsaw I have no idea what he did there...

Warlord_Irochi
Warlord_Irochi

@frozenuxI think you just posted the industry's formula in general.

And you forgot Killer 7, Twilight Syndrome, Project Zero/Fatal Frame IV, Michigan Report from Hell, Flower Sun and Rain, The Silver Case... those are out of the formula.

Games on that formula are more popular, but Still Shadows of the Damned and Lollipop Chainsaw kinda stay away from it.
