Kid Icarus flies again on Wii VC

Pit's original outing joined by fellow NES platformers Kirby's Adventure and Ice Climbers on Nintendo's downloadable game service.

by

Pit takes flight once more.

Originally released in 2001, Super Smash Bros. Melee is still a regular resident in the top 10 of the GameCube sales charts, and its announced follow-up for the Wii--Super Smash Bros. Brawl--is among the system's most anticipated releases. Now fans can see where some once and future Smash Bros. competitors got their start, because the console debut titles for original Smash Brother Kirby, Super Smash Bros. Melee's Ice Climbers, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Pit are now available on the Wii's Virtual Console.

One of the earliest Nintendo Entertainment System platformers, Ice Climber allowed two players to scale 32 mountains while jumping between moving platforms, avoiding falling icicles, and smashing enemies with a handy hammer. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review of the Game Boy Advance Ice Climber rerelease.

While the name references the classical myth of Icarus, Kid Icarus actually tells the story of Pit, a young bow-and-arrow-wielding angel who ventures through the kingdom of Angel Land on a quest to defeat Medusa. Kid Icarus was originally released on the NES alongside Metroid. Both were adventure games that let players save their progress with a password system.

Kirby's Adventure was one of the last big NES platformers, arriving for the system in 1993, almost two years after the Super Nintendo had been released. The game introduced a novel twist on the platforming formula: The pink puffball protagonist could inhale enemies to absorb their powers.

All three games are available on the Virtual Console for 500 Wii points ($5) each.

I have Ice Climber, Kid Icarus and Kirby's Adventure for GBA. When is the VC going to get some original titles? How about the Super Famicom Kid Icarus that was released in Japan only? For those of you that haven't played them though, great games. Please enjoy.

Sweet. Kid Icarus was only behind Metroid and the Zelda games in terms of time spent in my NES as a teen.

I was super excited to see Kid Icarus available for download. Did anyone that downloaded it notice that there's a disclaimer that passwords won't work for it? I have yet to try it, hoping that isn't true. I'm really excited about playing it some more though. Apparently I suck at it now as much as I did as a kid. Damn, that game is hard!

I've already got the original carts still in working order for Kid Icarus and Ice Climbers. Both of those were definitely favorites of my youth (I'm 26 btw). I recall playing Ice Climbers with my younger sister as kids and always trying to get the other to fall. Ahh memories. I just may have to "re-purchase" these for the VC just to have them so easily accessible on my Wii system though. I never did play the original Kirby's Adventure either...only the SNES versions. I'll have to check it out. Great week of VC releases though definitely.

I always wondered about the box art though... what exactly is that enemy supposed to be? The game sprites look nothing like that, yet it's as recognizable to me as any hand drawn art for Coleco or Atari games...

Kid Icarus owns. To those of you who haven't played it before, do yourself a favor and kill a lot of stuff in the first couple of levels to make sure you level up a couple times before going to the first labyrinth thing.

Sweet. . .I've wanted to give Kid Icarus another go for a long time, but couldn't handle the game very well with my Sidewinder controller. Hopefully I'll fare better with the Wii Remote. And Ice Climbers is one of those titles I always wanted to own as a kid, but passed by in favor of other, flashier titles. Wrecking Crew falls in this same area for me. As for Kirby. . .I bought Nightmare in Dreamland a few years back. I've already fulfilled my desire to replay Kirby's Adventure.

Good to see Nintendo re-releasing some of their classic titles. I guess it doesn't hurt their bottom line either...

Woot! Ice Climbers are the characters that fit me best in Melee and their game is great!! Kid Icarus is one of those games that I always wanted to play and now I finally can!! By the way: both games have at least one eggplant in them. Write that down.

"jd7-03 I'm sorry but $5 is way to much for this game. NES VC games should be $2 at the most. Plus none of the VC games have online play, or any new features for that matter. " Could you wankers be silent? The price has been discussed to death. It pays for the following. The bandwidth the wiiconnect 24 uses, the licenses to get the game, the coding costs of the games, future wiiconnect24 content, brand new vc games. 99% of publishers wouldn't put their games on the vc if Nintendo charged the price you wankers want. So deal with it.
