Key World of Warcraft dev leaves to work at League of Legends studio

Greg Street AKA "Ghostcrawler" quits Blizzard to join Riot Games where he will work as lead game designer on an unannounced project.

After World of Warcraft lead systems designer Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street left Blizzard Entertainment late last year, it was widely wondered where one of the MMO's most influential and visible designers would land. Now we know: League of Legends developer Riot Games.

Street's LinkedIn profile page, corroborated by industry sources speaking with Massively, reveal that he now works at Riot Games as a lead game designer.

He has yet to confirm the news publicly, and offered a cryptic message on Twitter yesterday after the news started making the rounds.

"Thank you for all the recent tweets, but I think the appropriate thing for me to do is lie low for awhile. I won't vanish forever. Cheers," Street said. His current Twitter bio says he is working at "some place cool."

Blizzard Entertainment is headquartered in Irvine, California, while Riot Games' main office is in Santa Monica, which is just about an hour away.

Riot Games' only released project so far is League of Legends, the massively popular MOBA. It wouldn't be surprising to learn Street has joined the studio to work on a new game, though that remains to be seen.

Why ppl blame Ghostcrawler for ruining wow , He was forced to obey upper echelon "craptivision" moaned for money so they changed game from hardcore to easy but it's still fun, "3 month have not played it Record".

Good luck on new job :)

He opened up and communicated with the WoW fanbase when not many at Blizzard would, and he took a lot of flak for it.  He made his share mistakes, but he always seemed honest in what he said.  Best of luck to all parties involved.

I fear for League of Legends...

But one this is certain. If he left WoW. Then it means next expansion must TRULY be a pile of manure to scare away this dude. That or just burnt out from dealing with people who know their class better and wanting more raid class balance. *shrug* whatever.

With a name like "Ghostcrawler" you'll imagine some guy with long, flowing white hair tied back with raven feathers wearing a cape over a black nylon, skin tight cat suit adorned with the skulls of fallen enemies.

NOoo! I still remember his quotes like ''Deathknights are the new heroic class, they SHOULD be the strongest class in the game''. Last thing any myltiplayer game needs is shallow minded individuals like that.

Good riddance. Now maybe he can work the same "magic" on LoL as he did on WoW.

Oh no, what is Riot thinking? This guy ruined WoW!

The only constant thing in his career is that he loves having to do with communities that blame him entirely for everything wrong in their games and that systematically refuse to admit all the good things he has done.

Damn all the good devs they had have jumped ship now.

Ah well i wouldent want to have Activision as my overlords either.

I guess he wasn't please with the direction Blizzard is going. I know there are always opportunities but one of the main reasons people leave jobs is because you are unhappy with what you are doing.

Smart move really. WoW is fading, and LoL is gaining momentum every year. Don't let us down Greg.

Guess we know which way the future is headed. Please no more MOBAs, they suck ALL OF THEM.

And yet the USA somehow considers it a sport in league with Football and Soccer --

@wexorian Yeah, i stopped playing once it became a casual game in which everyone could get epics. Note that i'm a casual myself: I did Ragnaros and Onyxia like twice each. I just dont agree with the notion that "Well, i'm a casual i should get to advance to end game as well" Its a stupid sentiment. If you dont put in the time and the work you shouldn't reap the rewards. A game, like modern WoW, which rewards players for nothing renders its own progression system meaningless. There is nothing fun or satisfying in achieving something that you didn't work for.

I really, really, really want another hardcore MMO that doesn't cater to morons but with MMOs now going to the console space as well it will probably only get even more causal.

Hell, maybe we'll get a "Call of Dragoncraft: Dragon of Honor" or some bs like that with a monthly subscription, a base price AND microtransactions. Its the new way of doing business after all. More is never enough.

@DomZealI seriously doubt that guy had sole power over any one thing in WoW.  And even if he did, it was ok'ed by someone above him.

@SteamyPotatoesDon't mention the LoL card game, its taboo, hehe. Sounded kinda awesome but if you post your interest in their forums they delete it :(

@Dark_Mits Well, he was still part of the team, just that he got thrown under the bus more. Thanks to that team, the difference between classes were less noticeable.

@ziproyOne dude got a VISA for traveling which recognized him as an athlete. Since then MOBA's have been training for the MOBALYMPICS ever harder.

Some games are fun to watch but they are far from athletes... but anything that generates huge viewer count and revenue is considered a sport in America.

@ziproyI would rather watch and play League of Legends than any "sport" like football or basketball. Those sports are the TRUE boring ones.

@ziproy Fuck off you ignorant piece of shit Mobas dont all suck. There not my style of game but you saying that just shows how ignorant you are. Just cause you dont like something doesnt mean its bad and the fact millions of other people do like it get your head out your ass and keep your 2 cent opinion that know one care's about to yourself.

@normanislost@Kr3isenHe's paraphrasing him when he was making a sarcastic comment to people complaining about heroic class should feel heroic. I hate Ghost Crawler with a passion, but I still respected him and the way he kept touch with the base.
