Katie Couric acknowledges one-sided violent video games report

Network journalist acknowledges one-sided violent video game report; invitations to Bungie and the Entertainment Software Association were declined.

by

Journalist Katie Couric has acknowledged the misrepresentation of gamers in her recent hour-long report on violent video games.

Following the broadcast of the show, Couric reached out via social media network Twitter to encourage those who were upset by the segment to send messages that spoke of the positive side of video games.

Couric has since acknowledged the report was one-sided, stating, "It probably would have been a good idea to have somebody on the other side of the debate". Couric added that efforts were made to invite industry body the Entertainment Software Association and game developer Bungie onto the show. Both parties had declined.

The special report, titled "Are Video Games Ruining Your Life?" was aired on April 29. The segment included a testimony from Daniel Petric, who cited video games as being a "catalyst" for shooting and killing his mother on October 20, 2007.

Highlights from the report can be viewed on the Katie website.

Of course they're going to decline... the employees at BUNGiE has better things to do with its time - like their jobs.

Of course the industry wouldn't accept an invite from a liberal elite who was intending to misrepresent and slander them.

It's all just misinformation to terrorize and control the mindless and weak-willed. The real culprit behind violence is Nature. But it is our corrupt and insane society that fosters such violence, because it's more concerned with finding a scapegoat instead of finding a solution to the problem -- or even acknowledging the roots of the problem. And the "solution" that is offered is taxation or censorship. Of course, how rational! But what can we expect from a civilization that televises its wars?

Wait a min... She has her own show??? When did this happen?

Game companies not wanting to appear on a segment called "Are Video Games Ruining Your Life?"

Shocker.

FYI, I would be careful calling Katie Couric a Journalist. When CBS made her lead anchor, they saw their lowest ratings ever.

She is an idiot.

Katie just made the mistake of making uninformed assumptions. If she were a video game player she wouldn't have taken this stance. If you have noticed everyone in the media and celebrity areas who have made these same assumptions all have a common condition.. that is that they don't play video games. This is no different than having a truck driver perform heart surgery on someone. She has no qualifications to make this analysis, same as pretty much all of everyone I've seen making these assumptions.

Calling Katie a journalist is a bit of a stretch. She is just another spin doctor.

I think the person we should really be blaming is Obama.

Good for Bungie not to have participated. The bitch would have turned it into a hack job.

It's idiots like her and Joe Biden that will get "sin taxes" levied against games. Where is the industry leaders in all this? Why are they letting Washington and the media spin this so much?

That kid is using videogames as a scapegoat for why he killed his mom. When will those in the mainstream media and non-gamers pull their heads out of their asses and realize they are supporting the criminal's scapegoating.

Yeah.....Katie Couric should REALLY quit her job, she want a GAME COMPANY who MAKES VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES come to her show which is titles "Are Video Games Ruining Your Life? then she is just an idiot. I've seen her show just to hear out her reason, but CMON, that guy who killed his mom thought THAT EVERYTHING WOULD RESET LIKE GAMES, you can clearly see that he has a serious mental problem if he thinks that way. and what he played video games for 3 DAYS STRAIGHT, then he should have been playing video games in the first place. Her show is  just a pile of BS. Even the dad of the killer said "HE TAUGHT HIM HOW TO HUNT" and the son even said that 'THERE WERE LOTS OF GUNS IN THEIR HOUSE" just bull sh*t to your show Katie, just bs. Go get real gamers and see their point of view.....actually dont you're just gonna mess up anyway

There is no way you can have a DEBATE when you dont have at least TWO opposing sides.  smh. -_-

Geez Katie, you could've walked out onto the street and found thousands of people who play violent video games every day and have no issues.  Screw Bungie, get some real damn people to talk.

Of course everyone declined, after all it's not like there was going to be any real journalist there.

"It probably would have been a good idea to have somebody on the other side of the debate"

Huh...you think? You are a so called "journalist" after all. I thought that was covered the first day in journalism 101, if not in common sense 101.

P.S. it's not a "debate" if you only have one side.

Plain stupid to blame murders to videogames, if this supposed to be true not a single person would be living on the earth right now.Yeah as fictional as violence in videogames but pppl  with mental disorders can't separate reality from fiction.Same aplies to religion and cults.

At least she has the guts to come out and acknowledge that they dropped the ball. That's a lot more than most news shows would have done.

SMART

If they showed they would have been burned at the stake by her, politicians and creative editing.

The best thing they could have done was no-showed to make it obvious that it was a biased one-sided argument.

Hate on me for being cruel...but why not have someone that played Halo that was a good citizen.  Maybe try very hard to find someone for the other side of the debate who hadn't murdered his parent or parents.

You invited Bungie?  Are you like half-retarded?  Why on earth would they show up to such a blatant distribution of false information.

@Longhorns62 She was actually and I think still is quite a good journalist. But like Fareed Zakaria can just accept anyhting and run with it due to time constraints and just kind of having many many others 'fact check' for you. These others can compile and develop a one-sided view of a topic because they too are only lookning for the popular reporting trend. All to serve public that demand fast "accurate" news.

Any journalist really should strive to look at the alternative, unpopular argument as this video game debate is as old as the industry itself. Its got the same people complaining chanting the same tune. That alone should be cause for some speculation. being a journalist Katie could have been "the one" but so could many other journalist to introduce the other side of the argument.

In the end its all just for ratings.

It's not really their fault; everyone's looking for scapegoats. The main people should be involved are parents.

@MajahretDiviera She also forgot to mention that there is no debate.  hundreds of millions of gamers =/= a few crazies.

@---Cipher---How in the world she & non-gamers can sit there & call it debate? It was completely one sided & Ms.Couric could have done an better job at reaching gamers. News media shouldn't report video games, again. Why? It's always negative, always one sided, video games get blamed for everything & never get the full story.

Yomigaeru

@hitechgraphs Yeah, bur when people cite God as their impetus for killing, everyone immediately brushes them off as crazy. Blame GTA, however, and video games are suddenly society's pariah.

@Mazoch Damage is already done, Mazoch.  Do you really think that if they re-run the episode, they'll run a pre-roll stating that they messed up and that the discussion should be taken with a grain of salt?  That not all gamers are psychopaths?

NOPE!  It's a cheap ratings grab and transparently so...

Yomigaeru
Yomigaeru

@fadersdream I agree. After all, why waste your time in a 'debate' when the conclusions have already been drawn, or waste words on fools who won't listen anyway?

fadersdream
fadersdream

@Donrock12 it was a no win situation. When I first saw this article and was compelled to jump in I resisted and later realized that all it would serve is to give them ammunition to use against us gaming fans.

This is the NRA excuse, the PTA excuse everyone's excuse to blame someone else other than take personal responsibility. There is too much money being used to make gaming a villain factory to beat them in a debate on a show with sponsors.

Kyere

@OneStrong2 He's right, politicking is hardly new in human history. We always look for scapegoats to cover up the nasty truths behind our societal problems. And in this particular situation, it's the parents.

@junglist101 @MajahretDiviera I'd like to see the statistics on how many spree killers also watch network TV.

I'll bet it's close to 100%... and it's a wonder nobody's making THAT association...

NOPE it's gotta be the games!

F*ck mainstream media and f*ck politics.

@junglist101 @MajahretDiviera Given that violent videos games apparently make us all sociopaths, I'm wondering why America isn't like Mad Max at this point. Last time I checked, 'breach of contract' in America didn't involve 'facing the wheel' so I guess we're not as crazy as everyone thinks.

csward

@fadersdream @Donrock12 So true. I can't understand why the industry doesn't have political action groups and PR people to stop the sheep from being swayed by this nonsense.

I'm afraid our freedoms may be taken away or taxed heavily.
