Karateka remake hits XBL in November

Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner's 1984 beat-'em-up coming to XBLA November 14, according to listing; no word on PSN release.

Earlier this year, Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner announced that he would remake his 1984 beat-'em-up hit Karateka for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. Now, a listing for the game on the Xbox website reveals the project will release on that platform November 14.

Karateka's new look.

It is unclear if the release date is legitimate, or what the game will cost, and a Microsoft representative was not immediately available for comment. No release date for the PSN version has been revealed.

The product page for Karateka reveals the game's art has been created by Batman: The Animated Series designer Jeff Matsuda, with music from Grammy Award-winning composer Christopher Tin (Civilization IV).

I'm surprised more old school game makers don't go this route and try reviving old titles they worked on, and give them an update/upgrade/reboot/remake for today's audiences and marketplace.

Maybe there are serious property ownership rights/trade marks/copyrights hurdles for them to overcome first.

Either way, I look forward to "Karateka." I have enjoyed some cool XBLA demos lately, and any new good ones are more than welcome on my hard drive.

Yeah it was a long time ago but great day's none the less. Only guys like those mentioned and others who were there at the at the start can bring back the glory days of gaming and not these big companies that churn out the same stuff year after year etch. Small independent devs with fresh thinking is what we need.

I remember playing it on my Atari 800XL ...wow ...that might seem to Some here as Eons ago....lol and it was....

God I remember this game, it was Fantastic for its time along with POP. I played them over and over again, couldn't get enough simple pleasures. Who remember's Sandy White who did Ant Attack and Zombie Zombie? As far as I'm co concerned all these classics could do with an update and bought to a new audience. What made these games such classics was the way they looked and played, and you shouldn't mess with that. Look what they did to Syndicate! What was wrong with the way it Looked? The games market is flooded with FPS why change it? Stupid.

I still have the floppy disk to this game for my Apple IIe. The joys of magically converting a single sided floppy disk into a double sided floppy disk through the use of a magical tool called the paper hole puncher.

Interesting visual design. Not bad, but not what I expected when I heard of Karateka remake. Too bad it won't be on PC though. But it's great to see that Mechner is still around.

And will they bring back the infamous doors? To this day i have only passed them once and that was just pure luck.

Anyone else remember how as soon as the game started, you could take one step to your left and fall to your death?  A couple seconds of silence, and then...thud.  Classic!

I still have this for Atari 7800. I was hoping the remake was going to be more faithful artistically to the original versions and be in 2d. Not liking the art style. Not sure how this is going to succeed unless they did some significant updates to the gameplay.

It was a decent game then, I'm not sure I would plunk down $15 for it today. Hopefully it's much cheaper, or I'll wait on a sale.

One of the better games from my youth.  A remake is a bad idea. The simple mechanics of the game fit the computing power of the time (the commodore 64 era)

I guess now video game makers are jumping on the same fail bandwagon the movie industry is on remaking great hits from the 80s and ruining their classic status.

@oflow You can still watch classic 80's movies, so it's not the same. Even though I still have my C64 and Apple II, most don't. It's encouraging to see creators bring back so of those classic games. Now if I could get all 3 and a finished 4th Spy vs Spy on XBLA I'd be happy.

@gatsbythepig Sorry for the ignorant thing P.S Mariko was the princess and the villian was Akuma

@gatsbythepig So you are literally ignorant Before Prince of Persia, Jordan Mechner created game call Karateka, was a platform, you fight with one opponent at time, your quest was save a princess(Before saying something like, i dunno!, go search, will worth, just a friendly advice)

@SwiftusMaximus Yeah, kinda sad that a PC game is not coming back to the PC.  I remember the game being in my computer class in grade school.  There were only 2 floppies that said Karateka on them.  So I naturally finished my assignments early to get my hands on one of em!  It took me about 3-4 attempts to figure out that if you don't want the girl to kick you in the nuts, you have to walk up to her and lose the fighting stance...lol.

@ZOD777  I was wondering when some moron would post something about the ending. Congratulations.

 @Meta-Gnostic  @ZOD777  Yeah and you truly need to get over yourself, I better not spoil the shocking spoiler in The Empire Strikes Back either... O_o;

Reading about it and experiencing it for yourself are two different things.  Best advice get a life and don't take things to seriously, or better yet instead of complaining about getting story points spoiled by us mentioning these very old games, how about going and you know, playing them, and your excuse that its too hard to do, bollocks, it is easier than ever to find a version of that game (or any of them mentioned) and play it through conventional or alternate means, your reasoning is just that a lame excuse to complain and make much ado about nothing.

About as bad as someone having a fit when I was discussing Resident Evil 2 back in 2010 and spaz-ing out and yelling about spoilers all over the place, it came out in 1998, if you can't play it in 14 years, I don't know what to tell you.  As I said, I'll be polite and be as spoiler free as possible with games 5 years or less, but any older than that and I don't see any harm in discussing it, if you do you're either too young to have played it in any original release (which is more than likely in this case) or too lazy to play the classics and enjoy them for yourself. (which also seems to be the case)

I was pointing out the hypocrisy in that original post and why I seem to keep running into inexperienced people like you saying futile things like that, as someone mentioned, do we know that is the ending of the remake, no, but if you're going to expose yourself to people discussing a remake of a 30 year old title then you either quit reading knowing that something will be mentioned spoiling it for you, or you deal with it and keep reading, as seeing as how you did and continued to comment on it, I feel even less sympathy for your plight because of your attitude dealing with the situation...

Meta-Gnostic
Meta-Gnostic

@ZOD777  @uncle5555 It is spoiled. The ending is a what-the-fuck shocking moment, that will have you laughing or crying, probably both. But since people already heard it it is ruined, it is expected.

ZOD777
ZOD777

@uncle5555  And like the article says, it is a RE-MAKE.  Which can mean a multitude of things, including RE-MAKING the ending into one that is more suitable for today.  The ending was stupid in Karateka, or at the very least as lackluster as the ending to Double Dragon if not more-so.  I didn't ruin a goddamn thing other than your delusion that somehow the game is now spoiled or ruined in some way.

chibigoten23
chibigoten23

@ZOD777  @Meta-Gnostic  @uncle5555  @Cowboy-Bebop Wow, seriously? What did you expect that after almost 30 years still nothing will be known about the original? He ruined the ending of a game which is known for everybody who has ever had remotely any interest in gaming has heard of. It's the game without which there may not be Prince of Persia which is as big milestone in gaming history as is Final Fantasy.

But when Aeris' death is mentioned or every single detail about new Assassin Creed is revealead, nobody gives a crap. If he ruined it for you then don't buy the game. It's simple as that.

Oh, yeah and spoiler alert: The Warriors of Light defetead Chaos 2000 years in the past thus establishing world peace but nobody knows of that in their time.

ZOD777
ZOD777

@Meta-Gnostic  @uncle5555  @Cowboy-Bebop It isn't like the ending to an epic game or a movie for god's sake.  It is a game that literally takes less than 1 hour to beat (the original).  If you really are taking a stance on this one, I truly pity you.  Besides, there are no guarantees that the game will even be remotely close to the same ending anyway.  Based on the screenshots, it looks like only the name and possibly that it is a sidescroller are about the only thing they have in common.

Meta-Gnostic
Meta-Gnostic

@uncle5555  @ZOD777  @Cowboy-Bebop Why would people want to know the ending to a game that is rereleasing soon? So what it's old,  it's coming out again and people don't have an easy way to play it. Plus, some people may hunt down the original, but now you ruined the ending for that too.

You certainly ruined it for me personally. I have the original on 7800 but I never beat it on that system, I think it was probably a harder version, I know the controller was.

Maybe you would be okay if I started posting the ending to countless old games and movies you were planning on watching/playing at some point in your life until I ruin 2 of those for you. Should I start posting ending after ending at random?

uncle5555
uncle5555

@ZOD777  @Cowboy-Bebop Seriously, I read people complaining all the time, "well you spoiled it for me", and my response is "huh, seriously?!?"  You've had 30 years to play it, FFS, if the imaginary statue of limitations about when you can talk about a game and be spoiled by talking it about it has to be over at some point (I'd say realistically 10 years) if not, then I don't even know what to say, other than you should have expected it, especially after all of these years.

Makes note that I shouldn't mention that you defeat Dr. Wily in every Megaman game ever and save the world so as to not spoil it for someone who's never played it before....or that Mario rescues the princess at the end of SMB1...whoops.

ZOD777
ZOD777

@Cowboy-Bebop How is mentioning the ending to a game that is almost 30 years old moronic?  You are a moron if you think that the ending will be exactly the same.
