Kara nothing to do with Quantic Dream's next game

Heavy Rain developer says tech demo doesn't depict the world, story, or characters of its next project, was intended to showcase performance capture technology.

by

Gamers hoping to further explore the world or story of Quantic Dream's latest tech demo Kara are going to be disappointed, as studio founder David Cage has stated that his next game will be entirely unrelated.

Intrigued by the world of Kara? Tough luck.

"Kara is not our next game," Cage told the Official PlayStation Blog. "It's not the character, it's not the world, it's not the story. … We do things in a very strange way here, things that have nothing to do with the games we make. But I think that's a part of the DNA of the studio, and hopefully something that people like about us--they never know what they're going to get!"

As for the technology being demonstrated in Kara, Cage said the goal was to showcase the studio's new performance capture techniques. In Quantic Dream's last game, Heavy Rain, the studio recorded voice work and motion capture separately and then stitched the two performances together. For Kara, the studio is recording everything at once, as was done with the movie Avatar.

Released yesterday, Kara is set within a futuristic manufacturing facility assembling an android designed to look and behave like a subordinate woman. After some initialization tests, the android explains that it "can look after your house, do the cooking, mind the kids," and is "entirely at your disposal as a sexual partner." The android is fully assembled and given the name Kara, but once she realizes she "is a sort of merchandise" and thinks herself to be alive, an unseen operator begins to disassemble her as a defective model.

The demo specifies that the clip "is a concept only and is not taken from any software currently in development." Heavy Rain was originally revealed through a tech demo that showed a tone and setting not unlike the game, but had no direct tie to the story.

Great Engine, I'm sure many people would like to see this story line implemented into a game it reminds me of the Andriod sunny on  Irobot and a struggle for freedom/life.

I'm more interested in this than their upcoming game atm.

The fact is, the demo is good.  Very good.  And it has accomplished the multiple things it set out to do.  It has showcased the new technology and connected with players' interest.  The fact there is such an emotional connection and demand for Kara to be a full game will not be overlooked by the developers.  I'd hedge my bet on seeing this as a full game in the next 4-7 years.

this would make an awesome story for another interactive movie from quanticdream

Kinda sad It dosent have to do with a new game, It has a pretty good concept to it.

the tech demo before heavy rain looked like a tech demo. this looks like a story/game concept. if their next project isn't as compelling as the idea of playing a rogue AI that is vulnerable and alone, people are going to be pissed

i loved the tech demo and i felt more then i felt during whole games i do wish they made a game out of it but im sure whatever game they do make it will make me feel and give me an experience few games can im just very impatient and want it now!:P

That had a better story than all the FPSs this gen. Damn I want more!!! Heavy Rain was an awesome game. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO HER!

this is something i have always wanted to see in a video game, hope their next project is even more surprising

a game has NEVER made me cry because most game graphics still have a "video game/cartoonish" look to them. Technology like this which resembles "real life" Avatar movie quality might end up getting an emotional response from me.

ye this was awesome. It acctually brought a tear to my eye. i loved the Voice Actress. If Heavy Rain's Voice Actors were that good the game would have been soooo much better.

Hopefully they reconsider. This tech demo was one of the most intriguing concepts for a game (or movie) that I've ever seen. It's the type of concept that elevates gaming beyond simple mindless entertainment.

The video is amazing, it would make a good movie..... An android who is accidentally built with a soul searching for the meaning of life......

@Marky360 -- It's called "Short Circuit"; you should be able to find it on Netflix.

Their actual title will use the same engine for a Hentai tentacle simulator, which requires pretty much all the same level of component animation detail.

Well that's disappointing. They were able to get me emotionally attached to this character in such a short time that I'd like to see what else they could do with this. At least we know that Quantic Dream will still be taking an adult approach to gaming and broaching those territories that other developers don't tread.

I gotta say after watching that video I believe that Kara should be made into a movie because I really would like to see what would happen if you stuck a self-aware android into a world with a bunch of subservient robots.

Man that is disappointing that this won't become a game. I loved this demo; it really draws you in and you really connect with Kara. Quantum Dream has such an incredible ability to create an emotional attachment with the player/viewer. I love this studio.

I was kind of excited, they did the heavy rain tech demo then made a game for it, idk how or what they would have done but I started getting into it and all it was was a 7 minute demo :\

It's such a shame that this won't be made into a game. This seven minute tech demo brought out more raw emotion in me than most games can ever hope to do.

cgi short movies have been made before. i must agree that this was very impresive and the textures are very life-like, but still a cgi movie. interactive gameplay doesn't behave as fluid as the cinematics and Heavy Rain is the proof. don't get me wrong, Heavy Rain i one of the best games on PS3 and i hope Quantic Dream's next title to be at least as great.

To think that the premise has a ton of potential. I'll just look forward for the next game they'll make but it's a damn shame not to turn this into a game even just a DLC.

Something between AI and Bicentennial man. There can be a lot to flesh out this as a great game. But sometime later on. Maybe on next gen console?

Well, if not a game, then I am sure that Kara would make a wonderful movie.

I'm disappointed. I spent all day at work thinking about how cool a game set in the universe implied by the tech demo would be. Imagine a classic-style adventure game where you play as an android on the run! Also playing alternately as an android hunter. Whoa, this sounds like Blade Runner. But still! I thought it had a lot of story potential

What part of "just a tech demo" didn't people get? honestly.

nate1222

Well, Quantic Dream just rubbed me the wrong way. But, I'm not even a PS3 buff. Nonetheless, it would be cool if a decent indie developer created a game with a story along the lines of Kara. I'm more than happy to take a hit on production quality if the story, voice-acting and general aesthetic are good. But I don't expect the mega-publishers to allow a dev to take a creative risk on anything outside of CoD clones anymore. It's gonna have to be an indie dev with some clever ways around a mid-range budget.

Absolutely incredible!!! The graphics! How they can tell an incredible story in 5 minutes. Anything Quantic Dream does is absolute gold. This is what video games should be.

Mmm, for realtime it's on a par with most pre-rendered stuff which is nice... Was nice of them to put the extra effort into making it more than just a show of graphics, clearly a tech demo on how they can play with peoples emotions as well. Did think Tri-Ace's tech demo was nice, but this beats it.

SAFEone09
SAFEone09

Pretty, as a tec demo it does a job, but thats about it, the basic idea has been done to death and some of the writing seemed stupid like the way he uses terms of enderment towards her(it) and making something that looks and sounds real then having her(it) stand still in a box to sell, got people talking so i suppose job done.

I wonder if they can really ignore the amount of interest generated by this tech demo. I hope to see more of this world.
