Just what has Square Enix done to the mobile version of Final Fantasy VI?

Final Fantasy VI, complete with its new visual style, is out on the Google Play Store now.

Square Enix has released Final Fantasy VI, one of the most beloved entries in the long-running JRPG series, for Android devices.

The game is out now on the Google Play Store now, priced £10.99/€14.49. The game is compatible with Android 3.2, but it's recommended you run the game on a version of Android higher than 4.0.

One player on Reddit has chronicled their experience with the game, including the game's redesigned mobile controls and features, and also spotted a particularly jarring typo for longtime fans in the game's opening scene. Espier?

Final Fantasy VI, first released on the SNES in 1994, has received a visual makeover of sorts for this new mobile version. The sprites for the main characters have all been smoothed out and recoloured, and the new visual style is almost certain to prove divisive for the game's fans.

What do you make of it?

Running smoothly on my Samsung Tab GT3110 (a very weak tab), already on WoR and by now I think this version is just awesome. A good job with all sprites updated (battle effects) and battle scenes as well. Character sprites changes? You get used to it, it's not that concerning to a hard fan as it was (for instance) with manga-style Zelda Wind Waker graphics.

So if you are reading this to know if it's worthwhile, i'd sugest to see by yourself - or at least to not follow lazy reviewers who just put his or her first-impressions prints (by the way, Narshe is the first city you play on FFVI and the thing with snow graphics isn't representative of all the good job already mentioned).

Only thing I would change is the airship controls, but it's not like it doesn't work. And it's obvious I didn't have to pay a cent to play it - seriously, are you really complaining about app prices on the INTERNET? Give me a break.

Pfft, the original is $10 on psn. I'd get the cheaper one...but I bought it for $7 on sale. Ahahaha, SE!

IF you have not played this game, then please do, it is worth the time and money. If you have, this port is one you can probably pass up.

So how many FF6 versions are there right now? Which one is the best from all of them?

Horrible and lazy graphical update. That is all.

I don't like hoe SE updated the graphics as it takes away from the old school feel.  I know I could buy it on gba or PSN, but having on Android gives me more accessibility and less limits on when and how I play.

There are things called emulators for old games that happen to work on Android too. So you can play the original instead of this.

sorry but no, still got the GBA version and apparently it works :D

It'll probably still sell well at that price, as mobile gamers are usually desperate to play anything that resembles an actual game, rather than just another gem/hidden object/fruit slicing app.

£10.99/€14.49 ? Forget it Square!! I can get the original for far less than that! 8-\

Look, Square Enix doesn't realize that pricing these downloadable games at 15-30 dollars is outlandish and ridiculous.  They also don't seem to understand that making a generic fragmented structure of a game only to force players to pay real money to play almost every aspect of it (Final Fantasy All The Bravest) is insane and that no one else is doing that either.

And during Christmas, their "sale" was still 8-9 dollars at its lowest.

who cares, it's just a port to a decades old game. If you already own the other versions then don't buy it.

Why the hell would you change the graphics?  Square Enix, the games you made in the 90s are better than anything you do now, stop thinking you know better.

Looks okay but not worth the $15.

FFVII please.

At least it says Biggs instead of Vicks.

I don't like it. This is lazy. They just applied filtering to it to make it look less pixelly. They should have rerendered it like they did FF4 on PSP. Or just given it the DS treatment like FF3 and FF4.

Don't buy this, this is the crap version of FFVI, go buy the SNES or GBA versions.

Wish they would remake this for 3DS/Vita.

Urrrr, god it looks awful. The sprites look all smudged and weird. Kinda like when you start a level in a game that hasn't loaded properly, and everything looks blurry and ill-defined until the textures pop in. It looks like that.

weird.

Orga777

I liked the smoothed out sprites, which give it a more enhanced look. It isn't like they changed the art design any. I think it looks pretty damn good. However, why isn't this on handhelds? I would buy this instantly on my 3DS or Vita. Damn it Square... :(

It's kinda cute. I like it. Not saying it's better, but it's not horrible, and if it makes the game look more appealing to some new players, then it's absolutely fine.

Or you could just play the original...  Which looks 1000x better.  Pixel art FOR THE WIIIIIIIN.

I don't know what people are complaining about. If you remove your eyes before playing it's ok.

Porting a 20year old game (which, while great in its time, without nostalgia googles isnt really a big deal) with minimum work, with a 15e price tab? Holy shit, HOW does Squeenix still lose money?

The_Gump
The_Gump

@soulless4now Yeah except it runs like CRAP.  Load times when bringing up the menu screen?  No thanks.  I'd rather pay the extra $5 and get a sleeker, smoother representation of the game.  Quit cackling as though you made a better decision than everyone else.

@dr_jashugan

Barring a yard sale you will pay more than that for this great game.

Ebay prices:

Snes version 40+  US dollars

GBA version 30-35  US dollars

The cheapest version around is probably the PS1 version but it suffers from ridiculous load times:

Amazon has that version at 16 US dollars

So in every case you pay just as much for this game or more.

@Jedilink109 You'd be surprised how many people would still shell out for it at 30 bucks. I'm just curious as to how many different ways Square can remake the original FF games.

@KarlinelI believe Apple and Google take 30% of the cut for providing access to such a vast market. This is totally worth it for new IPs and new developers but if you are an established brand with an already eager and awaiting customer base, you might not want to take the hit. Between taxes to your Gov and the 30%(?) to Apple and Google, to get your 5 bucks a download for a product you toiled away (no matter how long ago) making, you might have to charge upwards of 15 dollars. I personally will wait for a price cut but I totally understand where Square is coming from.

Orga777
Orga777

@Karlinel

Isn't that big a deal? Uh. No. It is still one of the better told stories in not only the Final Fantasy series, but RPGs as a whole. Take it from the guy that doesn't have the nostalgia goggles since I didn't play this till the GBA version came out. It became my favorite game ever from that experience.

@bs_nyc @Karlinel It was more of a rhetorical question than a proper one, anyway thanks for sharing that information, it's always pleasant to know more about digital distribution's business model (since for me it's arcane as hell).

Karlinel
Karlinel

@Orga777 @Karlinel If you take the opinion of someone who played on Atari 2600 when it was relevant (oh my god, im getting old), It's severely overrated. It's by no means a bad game, and certainyl the best of its saga, but as J-RPG stories go, Vagrant Story is better, Dragon Quest 8 is better, Chronotrigger/chronocross are better, Ni no Kuni is better, and if you press me, id say that Star Ocean is better. And that's leaving newer sagas such as Persona. So I think my opinion (shared or not) has something to base itself on.

Oh, and I forgot all the western RPGs (because the difference in gameplay/storytelling might make a JRPG lover dislike western RPGs).

Im glad you liked it, as it's a nice game. But the nostalgic feelings of many is what allows S-E to sell this kind of half-assed products.

@ThreeVo  If you start talking about "convenient plot devices" then a lot of the games mentioned are walking on glass.

Besides the narrative is different from those other games because the story is fragmented among several characters. A story will always be more tight if its focused on 1 or 2 characters.

But you're right, the game came out when storytelling in games was in diapers. Later games have done better.

crix01
crix01

@Karlinel @crix01 @ThreeVo @Orga777 You missed my point or i didn't explained myself very well. Is your opinion, but when you say SE is taking advantage of the "nostalgic feelings of people" you're implying people who thinks this game is better are "fooling themselves" while you are not.

You think, you believe you know better.

Shadowdanc3r
Shadowdanc3r

@ThreeVo  What's unique about FFVI's storytelling is that there's no real main character.  And Kefka didn't want to rule/destroy the world just 'cause, his motives were at least in part driven by nihilism.

Karlinel
Karlinel

@crix01 @ThreeVo @Karlinel @Orga777 I said (and at the very beginning) that it was MY opinion, as in "I think there are better games than this one". I don't understand why is it hard to understand that stating one's opinion does not equal to announcing "i have universal truth, and all of you are wrong". Just saying how I feel it.

ThreeVo
ThreeVo

@crix01 @ThreeVo @Karlinel @Orga777  OR hell even final fantasy tactics.

FF6 is a great game, but relies on silly overly convenient plot devices and a villain that simply wants to rule the world because.....  well just because, you know cause he is a crazy bad guy.

The games setting and music is great, best of its class even.

but   "better told stories in not only the Final Fantasy series, but RPGs as a whole"

comon man.... personal opinion doesnt even matter,  through general standards of what constitutes solid narrative and good writing, this simply is not up to par, for its time this was acceptable, but ever told in RPGs as a whole? no way in hell.  My point was more towards Orga 77 and where Karlinels point comes from.  In these regards, it is overrated to an extent.

And this remaster like all other android ones is absolutely atrocious

crix01
crix01

@ThreeVo @crix01 @Karlinel @Orga777 Not gonna start a fight over wich game is better. Missing the point of my comment. Just because you don't like something doens't mean is overrated.

crix01
crix01

@Karlinel @Orga777 Completely disagree. I played this game after 5, 7 and 8, when i was in college, so no "nostalgic googles" for me. Just beacuse you like other games better doesn't mean everyone else who likes it is for nostalgia.

Are you really that arrogant to believe you're the only one with a truthful opinion.
