Joe Mauer fronts MLB 10: The Show

Minnesota Twins catcher and 2009 AL MVP signs on as celebrity pitchman for Sony slugging sim on PS3, PS2, and PSP.

Last month, Take-Two Interactive tapped Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria as the cover athlete for MLB 2K10, citing the young star's bona fides, including a Gold Glove Award and a Silver Slugger Award. Today Sony named the cover athlete for its own upcoming baseball sim, MLB 10: The Show, and did Take-Two's pick one better.

The likeness is uncanny…we assume.

MLB 10: The Show will feature Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer, winner of two Gold Gloves and three Silver Slugger Awards. Mauer's resume doesn't end there; he was also named 2009 American League Most Valuable Player and is a three-time AL batting champion. According to Sony, Mauer's development duties will include motion-capture participation, AI consultation, and various marketing and spokesperson tasks.

When it launches next March on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PSP, MLB 10: The Show will include a number of features new to the series. Among the new additions to The Show, Sony is touting the Home Run Derby, the MLB Futures minor league all-star game, and a movie maker used to edit replays.

UFCme, I would take Mauer over Molina any day. As for A-Rod, he got the cover of Backyard baseball 2005 so life's not all bad for him.

UFCme
UFCme

Also. This is for silent hurricane. Yadier Molina is the best catcher in the game.

A-Rod should be on the cover. Who cares about Mauer's awards. A-Rod has 3 MVP awards. And besides, A-Rod has never been on the cover and he deserved hit alot of times.

@ ImYour13thStep, I see your point, but I still don't see what the big deal is. There is this issue in every sport. Yet even with the Yankee's "world market" they still can't win every year. They don't even come close some years. There is plenty of opportunity every year for someone else to win. Take the Cubs for example. They make a ton of money and yet they continue to not win a championship. They don't even come close. Detroit is a big city and they have struggled for years. I agree the money helps, but management will dictate how effectively that money is used. People can hate the Yankees or any other dynasty for that matter, but it isn't going to change the nature of the business.

It came down to Mauer and Pujols, and I think that Mauer is the more complete player. While Pujols is an amazing talent without a doubt, Mauer is insane as a catcher. Mauer actually has as many batting titles (three) over a span of four years as all other MLB catchers combined. No catcher has ever won more than three league batting titles, and I fully expect Mauer to win a 4th. He's also a defensive wizard behind the plate, and an excellent game-caller. Besides, Pujols has already had a cover appearance: on MVP 2004.

best choice because joe mauer is the best player in the mlb no question

@JacksSmrkngRvng I completely agree, but with the stipulation of a minimum payroll requirement for teams that receive luxury tax money. Just because you can site teams that have been the exception to the norm doesn't mean there aren't glaring cases of perpetual incompetence: i.e: the Royals, Pirates, Reds, Orioles (which I hate to admit as an Oriole fan), Nationals, Blue Jays and whoever else. A slightly more level playing field is in the long term best interest of baseball. Ratings spikes generated by Red Sox and Yankees World Series appearences are nice, but very short-sighted. Fan-bases with poor teams eventually turn from frustrated to complacent after long enough time. Complacence leads to a lack of interest which gets passed down to the next generation. At that point, interest in baseball around the country eventually dies.

Good choice for the cover. Mauer deserves the honor.

@Ubermensche Ha, I was talking about the thought process. I could careless if my spelling and punctuation is correct. As long as people are able to understand what I am writing I could care less. Your kidding me right? Comparing Steinbrenner's risk to a small market like the royals or the twins is an unfair comparison. The yankees are a legacy, known world wide. How many Twins caps do you think they sell in Japan? If you want to do unfair comparisons I could reasonably say If Nintendo had to take out a loan to develop a new product (games cube) would hold less risk than a company like Sega taking out a loan to develop a new product. (Segasaturn or dreamcast) Okay now say the products fail????? Who survives???? Nintendo is a legacy with many world series championships and sega is not. How do you like those apples???

Ubermensche

@ ImYour13thStep, It's funny how you take a shot at JacksSmrkngRvng by saying, "Did you go to college thats a BS comparison". It sounds like a question, yet I see no question mark. Not always wise to insult someone's assumed lack of education when you can't properly construct sentences. Oh, and the Yankees haven't always "bought" championships. In Joe Torre's first few years he took a team of what was considered an average (possibly above average) roster and won some trophies. The reason the Yankees are in the position they are in is because of past success of player development. You claim other teams can't invest money because of "risk". As Jacks pointed out, Steinbrenner has taken many risks, like mortgaging his team, to build the enterprise he has now. Perhaps if other owners had the balls and passion that Steinbrenner has for his team, they might see similar results.

ImYour13thStep
ImYour13thStep

JacksSmrkngRvng Hahaha you cant compare buying equipment to your business to nabbing all the free agents. Did you go to college thats a BS comparison. Anyways if you know anything about baseball, the teams that win the world series that are small market teams do something called "develop players." Then the players soon or later hit the free agency for the big bucks or get franchised. Its funny how you say teams like the twins could have a payroll like the Yankees. Hahahahaha your kidding right. The yankees buy championships and the twins earn them. The only reason your defending them is cause your a fan.Twins are up there in the division race every year because we have one of the best development programs in tripple A in the league. I think the twins are better for it. If the twins invested money like the Yankees do and had a bad year it would financially cripple the team. The Yankees can still survive if they have a bad year because they have a world wide market. You are right anyone of these owners could spend more money on players, but at a huge risk. If the team that they buy stinks they would probably have to sell the team. If detroit doesnt win the division next year they will be in that situation. Not that they will sell the team but will have to do something to make up for the loss

Mlb for the Playstion has always been top notch. But for the last 3 years this series has evolved from great series to the BEST sports video game in video gaming history. I have 09 the show but I also play MLB 08 the show as well. I love this series.Especially on the PS3.

JacksSmrkngRvng
JacksSmrkngRvng

Ahhh, I', sick of this "small market teams cant compete" garbage. The Marlins have won two World Series, Tampa competes, Minnesota is in contention year after year. The thing is that the owners of these "small market teams" refuse to invest their money in to the franchise(Proof of this was after BOTH Marlins WS wins the teams were gutted before the players could demand more money). They take the revenue sharing and stick it in their pockets while complaining "the system" isnt fair. There are plenty of larger market teams in every sport that have been stinking it up for years. Its not the money, even though it helps, its simply the ownership. Say what you want about the Steinbrenners but since he purchased the team he has put every penny(even mortgaging the team a few times) right back in to that franchise to build a brand and put the best product on the field every year. Most team owners are billionaires that own a baseball team as a hobby just like most of us own video game systems. Several team owners use their team as part of a tax write off as part of a larger corporation. Just like I say to everyone when they complain about the Yankees or the Sox getting all the top free agents, if you owned a business and you have the means to get the best equipment and produce the best product for your customers, would you cut back on your quality and workmanship just so the guy down the street could have a chance to put you out of business? Of course not. .

I thought it would either be him or Justin Verlander.

Why is that Yankee fans want to see their players on everything? Just because they won the WS doesn't mean that they should get the cover athlete. I'm not a Twins fans but I'm very happy to see Mauer on the cover. He's the best catcher in the game and one of the best hitters right now. Like I mentioned earlier, NO ONE is more deserving!

mhanson93
mhanson93

There's no way the Twins will drop the ball on this one. It would be a disaster to open Target Field and then lose the current face of your franchise. If there ever was a player (not named Kirby Puckett) that this franchise needed to re-sign, it's Mauer. Mauer will be signed and spend his prime years in Minnesota.

ImYour13thStep
ImYour13thStep

@Doolz2024 Ha Sabathia or Jeter? Ya right, might as well put the whole Yankee team on the cover. The salaries in baseball to compete are rediculous. It gives the smaller markets no chance to compete. The Twins are the best team in baseball salary wise. With the new stadium up I do not see Joe leaving the twin cities anytime soon even the Yanks got a huge boner for him. Saying anyone besides Albert Pujols and Joe Mauer deserve the cover is absolutely crazy, though.

codypc08
codypc08

I wouldnt be so sure about Joe becoming a yankee. First, the team only trades players that high caliber/profle to the national league (santana for gomez instead of elsbury). Second, I know two of his family members (I go to college with one and am friends with the other) and both say that he will almost definately re-sign with the twins before christmas for more than 5 years.

One of the things they should work on, especially in the new Home Run Derby mode, is: when I hit a long home run.. I want to see exactly where it lands in the crowd, or how high off the scoreboard it hits, or wherever... make me feel rewarded.. that's the whole thing that drives the home run derby- it's not who hits the most HR's, it's the tape measure shots that fans and the other players watching react to the most. Remember back to the first baseball games like RBI Baseball and Baseball Stars for the Nintendo- even in those games, the camera followed the ball all the way to the end of its flight and then the camera just stopped on that spot for a second for you to revel in the long bomb you just hit... I don't see how so many baseball game publishers have missed this over the years.

Doolz2024
Doolz2024

A Yankee should've been on the cover! Sabathia or Jeter! :D BTW, Enjoy Mauer while you can, Twins fans. He's going to look good in a Yankees uniform in a few years. :P

I bought a PS3 back when MLB 07 came out so I have been able to see the amazing transformation of the franchise and each year they make amazing additions. Last season they focused on the stadiums and the atmosphere. While at face value it didnt sound to major but it amplified the overall experience. They announced Real Time Presentation, realistic daytime progression, 5 new minor league stadiums, 6 classic stadiums, new training mode for pitchers and fielders, revamped pickoff moves that actually add to the strategy, and if you play a catcher in RTTS you actually now call the pitches and pitch locations, and can even have the pitcher repeatedly shrug you off. Plus a ton of improvements to the franchise mode. Thats just a fraction of what was already announced and they are saying there is a lot more to come.

I think MLB the Show has got the be the most solid sports game series out. There's little bad with it and oh sooo much good. Glad they decided to bring back the Home Run Derby but I agree a little with bluebori. If they could patch it with all the new features & only charge half the price, that would be great. The game is so solid, I really can't see them making major enhancements to the game that would make it even better. The game is almost as good as it can get. But that's only my opinion. Well see what they got in store if this version. If it wasn't cause my save data got corrupted, I'd have my created player ready to retire right now, Hall of Fame bound.

@tony832: I am another one who bought PS3 just for the show 08. It hurt the wallet, but I don't regret it for a second. The 09 version was much harder, but worth it once you got the hang of it. If you love baseball, then you HAVE to try it out. As for Mauer on the cover...Great choice!!

nagauthier

They may as well photoshop him into a Yankees uniform since that's where he'll be in 2011, if not by the 2010 trade deadline. And if the the game has Target Field in it instead of the Metrodome then the AI should be programed for the Twins to lose about 5 extra games a season since opposing outfielders won't be losing balls in the dome's ceiling anymore because they're not used to it like the Twins outfielders were.

@tony382: I didn't buy a PS3 for The Show, but I've got to say that any gamer out there who's a real baseball fan is missing out by not playing it. It's absolutely the definitive baseball sim for consoles. Anyhow, I'm just glad they didn't pick a Yankee for the cover.
