Japan game charts: May 15-21

The latest .hack PS2 game heads the list of best sellers in Japan--which is otherwise dominated by the DS.

by

It has been months since a PlayStation Portable game has made it onto Media-Create's weekly list of the top 10 best-selling games in Japan. The opposite has been true of the DS. Nintendo's dual-screen handheld is a straight-up craze across the Pacific, and titles for the device dominated the charts during the week of May 15 to May 21.

Seven of the top 10 games for the week were for the DS, and many were returnees from previous weeks. Kahashima Ryuuta Kyouju Kanshuu: Motto Nou o Kitaeru Otona DS Training was the highest-placed finisher in slot number two, just above relatively new entrant Tetris DS. Just below in fourth place was popular favorite Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, followed by Animal Crossing: Wild World (sixth), Eigo ga Nigate na Otona no DS Training: Eigo Duke (eighth), Pokémon Ranger: The Road to Diamond and Pearl (ninth), and Mario Kart DS (10th).

The remaining three slots were for Japan's favorite console, the PlayStation 2. Anime tie-in .hack//G.U. Vol. 1: Rebirth was the top title for the week, followed by two sports games from Konami: soccer sim World Soccer Winning Eleven 10 (fourth) and baseball game Jikkyou Powerful Major League (seventh).

Please note that all release dates above are for North America, not Japan.

Wow, those japanese have a crappy taste in games. I mean, first person shooters give them headaches. Of course, it's also sad how a HANDHELD is beating the crap out of something as big as the PS2.

wow and mario kart ds still reaches in top 10. hooray for winning eleven 10 btw.

I'm awaiting the new .hack game eagerly, and all the Images I have found on it are just proving to me that it is going to be an amazing game.

Do you think CC2 might pull a fast one with any future .Hack/'s by making them actual MMORPG's rather than a virtual pretend mmo? That'd be a pretty sweet and smart move of them to do, like for the PS3 or something since they seem to be bound to sony's home consoles.

You're all idiots. #1 don't complain about Japan's top 10 list being garbage when quite as often our lists are just as bad, except instead of anime games we have licensed crap. #2 Understand that your specific taste is only your taste and people have different tastes in games that you do, and that does not make anything garbage. Anyway, good to see the DS is still going strong.

"How ignorant are the people on this board to say that what the Japanese play is garbage. You guys are full out idiots. They have a completely different culture from ours with completely different tastes. Who's to say that what they play is garbage? You probably haven't even played half of those games and you have the nerve to say they're garbage? I think I smell the reeking stench of arrogance. Why don't you go pick up another overrated copy of Halo 2 and kill some brain cells." ^^^^ Quoted for truth Down with xbox 360 fan-boys.. But seriously glad to see they have good taste in systems in japan.

Some people find RPGs formulaic, like others find FPSs formulaic. I like them both for what they are. Some titles are good, some titles are bad. Good for Nintendo, though.

yeah, any one heard of .Hack Roots, thats a new anime series that are prequel to .Hack//.G.U., no wonder its number 1, and for those who sayed japan have a bad taste, they don't like FPS and Madden because its repetitve and unoriginal. they like to train thier brain. i find all those shooters just the same, just one or two will stand out every year, but the RPGs have epic stories that will make u buy every RPG in the market to try out diffrent story, but FPS are just the same. but what happened to Mother 3 and FF XII? go NINTENDO.

The same idiots bashing Japanese games are the same people wondering why their precious 360's don't sell well and have no good games for it except games that come out for EVERY system or PC. Oblivion, G.R.A.W, table tennis lol. 360 only has Halo, which is very over-rated. But then again, if that was the ONLY good game that came out for my system, i would over-rate it too..........

i dont agree with saying the japanese have bad taste but i also dont agree with saying fps including halo2 is garbage. where did that come from? and what planet did you come from saying Halo2 sucks?

That's a prety solid lineup. I don't get how that's bad taste. I mean just cause you only play shooters, it doesn't mean there are no other fun games out there.

I could not care less about the Japanese games market. PC & Xbox 360 all the way. To the person who was ragging on the 360, it has awesome games that are not first-person-shooters like Rockstar Presents Table Tennis, PGR3, Xbox Live Arcade, N3, FNR3 and more. I persoanally can not wait for Dead Rising or Splinter Cell: Double Agent.

Hmm a new .hack game. I'm not surprised about the DS running the show over in Japan. The problem is that there are very few PSP games worth playing. Sony needs to look back and start re-releasing games that did well on PSX and PS2. Ya know stuff like Castlevania: SOTN, Vagrant Story. If they tapped the list of hard to find games and get those put on the PSP I think it would do much better then its doing now.

meimnobody

It should be noted that the top ten DS games are buying bought by nongamers. People in their 40s and up who are males. Females buy lots of those DS games. Heck there are people in their sixties in Japan who go to game stores every week to see if a DS is in stock. Japan has such a hunger for the DS nintendo sends half of their DSses there and they still have a huge shortage. If you were to bother to look at the rest of the top 50 you would see DS dominating as well with the more traditional games. PSP games only go to the top of the charts for one week then die. PSP is dead to Japan because quite frankly Sony pays developers to put PS2 titles on it. To the developer it is pure profit and Sony losses out and customers don't want to buy these ports since they already have the games or the games suck on a portable.

lordxymor
lordxymor

http://www.the-magicbox.com/topten.htm PSP isn't dead, but has half of DS installed base. Note that x360 is still barelly outselling the gamecube in the 7th position. Note also that there's no x360 game in the top 30 chart. Now, do you think japanese people are just boycotting MS or is it the lack of japanese oriented games ruining the 360 in japan?

Yo if people dont understand the market needs of another country you need to do your research before talking crap about the games Japanese people play. WInning Eleven on the list is an easy one World Cup, PERIOD. People in Japan mostly take public transportation they need a game thats simple in gameplay and easy to play during there travels. Most of us drive in the US I'm guessing our usage for handhelds are different then the Japanese personally I just have one cause I'm gamer, but seriously I dont really need one. Nintendo and Sony really weren't thinking about the US gamer when designing one of these handhelds they were thinking about the millions of people in Japan who spend most of their time outdoors of course theres no doubt that they would love for us gamers to buy one. So It's no surprise to me that the DS games are the most on that chart. Personally I wouldn't play some of those games on that chart, but I think its good that gamers are still playing those kinds of games. Why do we have to debut and comment the games they play and like. It's totally different culture out there. As long as Japanese developers import the good games too the US its all good for me.

For Japan apparently Pokemon Ranger is the bomb, for me I could care less. Both GTA Vice City and San Andreas were GTA III with different skins and new soundtracks. I don't consider FPS's to be garbage at all, GTA is. Problem with 360 is that so far it only has one RPG. FPS's are fun but almost all lack in story. At least if 360 were to have more platformers or adventure games it would have more diversity but it doesn't. They flood the market with FPS's, Sports, Racing games. For every adventure/rpg game 360 announces they announce 3 new generic FPS's and 3 sports games with a new year attached to the title. If people are fanboys they take offense to my comments, like you have flex49.

flex49
flex49

Chubbums: 360 fanboys, besides GRAW and Oblivion which are also for PC, can you name an exlcusive 360 title worth buying a 360 for? Don't crack on Japans taste for games, when the only thing Americans play are FPS's and garbage like GTA. Not as lame as this post of yours, Chubbums....aren't you tired of dissing American gamers yet? You're like a broken record. You can crack on any game, system or country you want but you tell everyone else not to do the same. Oh yea, Chubbums, GTA is garbage but Pokemon Ranger is the bomb...LMAO!!

Chubbums
Chubbums
BTW, Chubbums...you can play those blase japanese games...I'll play Oblivion, God Of War and Burnout :Revenge instead
Very lame attempt at cracking at me being as to how I own those 3 games you listed. Oblivion is the most noobified TES game ever made, hmm I don't ever recall enemies constantly dropping glass armor and ebony armor at level 8 in Morrowind. 360 ruined Oblivion like Xbox ruined Deus Ex. Oblivion is a walk in the park, and anyone who says different is a noob who has never come across any real challenging game.

What are you talking about, mhder? How do you know what Japanese gamers talk about? Are you a Japanese consultant or live in Japan? They (Japanese gamers) do "bad mouth" (to use your words) us...just like Europeans "bad mouth" us and we "criticize" (to use my word) them because each region's tastes are different. And guess what....that's ok!! Japanese and Europeans cannot understand our love of football games. While we can't understand their love of soccer games and cartoon baseball games. A lot of people on this board don't have an "attitude"...we have a preference and it's not playing 5 year old games with or without motion sensors or touch capability unless it's just for retro fun...not on the top sellers list. If MS does eventually get those features...it better not be to play Pokemon, Tetris or Animal Crossing cause they'll lose customers ;) I guess Tetris and Pokemon are tops on your list, mhder :) Those games are behind the times and you're looking foolish trying to defend them.

Soldier69 - What a pathetic list of anime garbage. Well, if you weren't so pathetic yourself, you would realise that there is one, yes, only one game on that list based entirely on an anime. Intelligent contributions please.

mhder

Wow, the attitude of a lot of people on this board. I don't like those games therefor they suck or are behind the times. It goes to show how a company like MS can have countless shooters, and have serious customer service or supply problems and still be defended by its fans. The funny thing is, Japanese gamers don't care about what is played here nor do they go out of their way to bad mouth other gamers or game sales in other parts of the world. And for anyone who says looking at Japanese games, they can see Japan is behind the times - Well some might argue that a system without touch capability or motion sensors is behind the times. And when MS does eventually add it to their game system will you keep your stance and not support the system?

That's pretty long! :D ___________________________________________________ Now that's the funniest post I've read all day...LMAO!! The Japanese are really ahead of us. How sad is this chart. To think why is the Japanese market important to harware developers, when the taste of the advarage Japanese video game consumer is so far off than those of Europe and American. Who needs the Japanese marker, if it is the smallest, less profitable of the three. How sad.

Chubbums exclusive 360 titles worth buying.. Gears of War, PGR 3, DOA4, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Lost Planet, Lost Odyssey I could go on and on.. Also Blue Dragon as of the 28th of may is the 10th MOST WANTED game in japan so prepare to see the 360 start doing well over there ;)

Dot hack's a rip-off, the end. It's not about taste, it's about paying $200 for what amounts to an at best average RPG title in four installments, and then they want you pay another $200 dollars for the RPG sequal, than $210 for the anime series (non-special edition), then again for the anime sequal, than some more for the novels... When will the milking end!

Why does everyone care what people from other countries play? It isn't going to keep developers from making the games you like because you fit in a market niche, and there will always be games of your genre.

What can I say? With all the great games out right now, for the Japanese to be still playing Tetris, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Pokemon and a fake baseball game just shows they are so behind the times. It's a sad state....I wouldn't want to play any game in their top 10, or even worse is, I've already played half those games YEARS ago. :( BTW, Chubbums...you can play those blase japanese games...I'll play Oblivion, God Of War and Burnout :Revenge instead :)

Good to see that Nintendo is still doing well in Japan thanks to the Nintendo DS. It's also good to read that a new game topped the charts this week. Let's hope that the trend continues.
