Japan game charts: August 14-20

Nintendo first-party titles take seven of top 10 slots; DS games have top five positions locked down.

The latest Japanese software sales rankings from Media Create paint a familiar picture. For the week of August 14-20, New Super Mario Bros. once again claimed the top spot, leading the way for a week dominated by Nintendo. The Big N published seven of the 10 games on the charts. The Nintendo DS accounted for the top five games. The PlayStation 2 and PSP only managed to place one game each at the top of the charts.

The PS2 game, Daitogiken Koushiki Pachisuro Simulator Hihouden, simulates a popular slot machine, and moved enough copies to debut at number six on the charts. Meanwhile Bandai's SD Gundam G Generation Portable continued to represent the PSP on the Media Create list, finding its way to the number nine position.

Very few new games made it into the top 100 titles the week of August 14-20, and week-on-week sales dropped by about 140,000 units. Media Create notes this was expected, as these charts cover the week following the O-bon summer holidays.

Two games from 2005 are still in this chart for ages. However, I'm not surprised since we are talking about DS Training 2 and Animal Crossing: Wild World.

Number four is Brain Training 2 which has not come out of Japan yet.

Nice. Never saw Tamagotchi coming but still. If the japanese like it, then by all means, they should play it. Also, I haven't seen a GBA game on that chart in a while. Nice to see it isn't completely dead yet.

The DS is pretty awesome but how in the world is Tomagothi Connection up there? I obviously haven't played #2 but the first one is among the worst game on the DS...that just doesn't make sense.

For those arguing about weird games on this list and how japanese gamers are weird. Look at what Nintendo is trying to do. They are trying to expand the market, appeal to a wider audience. If there are games on this list that are not what you expect, would you not say that Nintendo is doing what they set out to do? The fact that they are appealing to a wider audience, that its not about the standard format for games now (storyline, graphics, mechanics, multiplayer) that make sales is definitive proof that they are doing what they are setting out to do. Sooner or later, these "hard core" gamers in the gaming world will become a minority group if Nintendo keeps this up and you'll see games that are not what you would expect. Its bound to happen, this is what the people call "change in trends". Get use to it.

runstalker: I think this is the total video-games chart. PC games in Japan represents less than 1/10th of the total market. Although it evolved since 1997 when it was twice as bad, it's still quite residual. Again, I guess one of the main issue concerns the "brand support/contry support" that Japaneses are found of, but there are others (there's some studies about this populating the internet). off-topic: I found recently that 360 allready represents 30% of the total consoles of Australia market (4th world biggest). I'd never imagine that, and they had one of the latest release dates.

Even if only 1 out of 40 people in my school has a DS, at least we're not wasting our money on a system that has only 5 good games.

This quarrel simply is ridiculous. I am ashamed to be from the Western part of the world if all we can do is laughing about Japanese gaming behaviour...

"why do u ppl rave over the DS owning the charts, when you know for damn sure you wouldnt be caught dead playing half the games they spit out." No, Liquid789. Only YOU wouldn't be caught dead playing these games. It's probably because your friends, who think shooting a pixelated gun extends their pen0r would ridicule you.

meimnobody: You can be right, but you do see lots of Ford's for instance in Europe. Since WWII, Japan had and still has some restriction toward its external policies, and army's limitations, they focused on ecnomic growth and production as they flagship. The kind of "brand rooting" you see nowdays emerging in Europe and the US, particulary with Sony (Japan's second flag, as someone allready stated), was invented in Japan, and exported quite successfully, through markting campaigns. As you all know many (most important) footbal/soccer teams of Japan, have a brand name on them (i.e.: Kawasaki Frontale; Yokohama Marinos; JEF United, and many more) - true laboratories of "brand rooting". (Sony also has a team, but hardly a top one, I think it's an amateur one, but does compete in the professional JLeague.) edit: even worse englsh...

Yes, the Japanese play PC games. MMOs, puzzlers, cart racers and RPGs do well over there on PC. Falcom, for example, has been making all-new, popular PC-exclusive RPGs for the last decade. This is a sales chart listing. That being said, obviously portable/consoles are king in Japan.

meimnobody

PC games have never been popular in Japan well with the exception of the porn ones. miiguel bother to learn why American cars aren't sold in Japan hell American cars don't sell well in America. Namely crappy gas mileage, noisy, unreliable, expensive. In Japanese size is another reason. The streets aren't big enough for American cars, nor is the parking spaces, driveways. Gas is hellishly expensive in Japan a car has to get extremely good gas mileage or they have to spend about six hundred bucks every week on gas alone which is what an American car would set them back due to it's gas mileage.

miiiguel
miiiguel

lalex2: guess for the same reason you don't see american cars in Japan. Japaneses get their patriotic feeling to economy.

Japanese don't seem to play PC games, do they? Does anyone here know why?

You know I wouldn't be surprised if at the end of this year Nintendo has another dozen million sellers on it's platforms. With most of those being Nintendo published of course. Heck out of 794 million seller games 194 were published by Nintendo. I doubt you could find a company that has published more million sellers then them. Seriously Nintendo is poised to come out on top again. Just wish I had the money to buy Nintendo stock.

meimnobody
meimnobody

Actually Gundam should drop off the top ten next week. It's been steadly decreasing. Not as fast as a drop as a PS2 Final Fantasy which usually sells a million copies it's first week then just a few thousand the next then a few weeks later just sells a few dozen. Brain Training and other DS franchises are replacing Final Fantasy in terms of popularity in Japan.

metroidlink1030
metroidlink1030

Final Fantasy III will no doubt be on top next week.
