JAMMA: Rival Schools 2 Hands-On

Capcom certainly had an unique fighting game with the original Rival Schools. It attempts to revive that formula in the sequel.

Capcom showed off its upcoming Naomi-based Rival Schools sequel at the AM show in Japan, and while the game certainly looks a lot better than the previous Rival Schools titles, the gameplay has remained largely the same.

When starting a one-player game, you can choose between story mode and free mode. Story mode lets you choose one of several schools, each of which has its own set of fighters. You have three-man teams here - one member fights, one helps out with team-up attacks, and the third is used to counter team-up attacks. If your opponent lands a team-up strike, you can hit both heavy attacks and call out your third member to counter. When called, the third member enters the arena against the other team's partner character, and you have five seconds to land a hit on the other character. If you land an attack, the team-up attack is broken up. If you fail, or if the other character hits you, the team-up goes through as planned.

The Japanese release of the game will feature some sort of support for the Dreamcast VMU, so it's safe to assume that a DC port of the game is already in the works.
