James Pond revival coming to Kickstarter on September 20

"I have no idea if there are enough people that still care about James Pond after all these years," says original creator Chris Sorrell.

The '90s platforming character James Pond will be attempting a comeback via Kickstarter, series creator Chris Sorrell has announced.

A Kickstarter campaign for the aquatic agent will commence on September 20.

"I have no idea if there are enough people that still care about James Pond after all these years," said Sorrell. "If you do, and if you can help us to fund this thing, then for my part i'd be very happy to do anything I can to help create a brand new game."

"But maybe this time we'd skip the chocolate biscuits," he added, referencing the product placement of McVitie's Penguin biscuits in the UK version of James Pond 2: Codename RoboCod in 1991.

The original James Pond launched in 1990, and was successful enough to spawn two sequels, with James Pond 2 having been ported to many other platforms over the years. An iOS game, James Pond in the Deathly Shallows, was launched in 2011 to poor reviews.

Bundle it with Robocod, with better saving, and I'd fund it. For sure.

There are some revivals I'd like to see. Megatraveller being on the top of my list. That game was incredible for it's time. I still compare it to games today and say MegaTraveller was way better. I'd spend hours just on the character creation..

Huh...alright.

I grew up playing James Pond 2: Codename Robocod on my Amiga CD 32. I liked it at the time and even finished it, which was rare for games I played at that time, since so many were very hard and limited the number of continues you had. Still, I don't quite have enough fondness or even nostalgia for it to wish for a revival.

Ah James Pond, good memories.  I hope the Kickstarter works out.

Lol, those copypaste Robocop arms, how was that not a lawsuit? :P

Kinda liked those games back in the day though, but not enough to warrant a revival.

I will remember this game; as a game that I didn't get to play, but always saw it in the magazines.

I don't want to tamper with that type of nostalgia.

Seriously? This game industry is a joke, no original ideas, lets make games that where out yesteryear! Love JP2 on my Mega Drive but enough lads, make some original games please!

He doesn't seem particularly thrilled at the prospect of making another of these games.  Oh dear...

I've never heard of this series before but I'm just wondering how it avoided copy right infringement lawsuits throughout it's span.

I LOVED my Amiga and I'm willing to pay a lot of money for a game such as Cinemaware's Wings if it ever hit XBLA but really James Pond? It was one of many terrible platformers to come out on the Amiga and ST in response to Mario and Sonic

Spent hours on Robocod finding every little hidden secret, loved it. Not sure the market is there any more though, not mainstream anyway. I wouldn't pay more than a couple quid for it.

Ahh good memories of that game.  Still, in saying that, some things are better left in the past.

So many of these. The current generation is so bad they have to keep going back.

A friend of mine used to have Pond 2 on the Sega Master System and I remember not to like that particular game too much. I wish Sorrell much luck with this revival, but I honestly don't think this Kickstarter will make it.

So sick of re-makes, sequels, reboots. Nobody have any original ideas anymore?

Sadly there are versions of this on Ebay for the Nintendo DS and GBA and they are selling pretty cheap.

I wish him good luck. I can't say much about the Pond games, never really was a fan of them, and barely even knew they existed, when I was a kid...but I think Kickstarter is the right place for a comeback. Good luck, sir.

well, Robocod was a great game back in the early 90's, but in all honesty, it's something I can't see working today particularly well. If they took the characters and setting and turned it into something else it might pique my interest, but as a platformer remake, I think it'll suck donkey scrotum.

who does owns the rights? it would make a pretty neat spelunky type game.
robo-cod was the best of the bunch with the extendable body.... need to think of a new fish pun combined with a famous action film...

"Pulp fishton" / "the Cod father" / "X-fish"  / "transflounders"

yeah i got nothing.

Huh. If we're bringing back platformers from the 90s I'd like to see Aero the Acrobat. Or maybe Disney gets back on their platforming days and bring back Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers. ooh ooh! Super Ghouls N Ghosts!!

@randomperson7 I think parodies are protected in some ways, but I don't know to what extent or why.

@Jasurim I agree with you. it is better for that game to stay as it is. old, funny. to refresh our memories when we were young. :) good old times

Don't see or heard that you're making any "original ideas". Less complaining & appreciate what you have & given.

@bunchanumbers  Ohh, I loved Aero the Acrobat, the 2nd one was the first game I ever fully compeleted on my own. XD

@bunchanumbers Actraiser the 1st one, where you had to re-build the cities with a little cherub. Ghouls N Ghosts would be awesome if done well but Capcom doesn't seem to give a damn. tho at least they're bringing Strider back.

@Uncle_Rell How would you see or hear him having original ideas? I have original ideas on a daily basis. I'm a hugely creative person. I, however, do not own a development studio or a publishing company.

See what I'm getting at? It takes a lot more than a great idea to make a videogame.

@Saketume Well, sometimes instead of reversing gravity, it blows up the planet. Sorry about that. Fortunately, I live in an indestructible bunker, and I have a time machine, so I can go back in time to before I accidentally blew everyone else up and stop myself from doing that. The question is, what am I going to do with all the versions of me from the future....

@Saketume @moodyfoo @starduke maybe because of anti-gravity matter, i guess
