Is ArcheAge the Next MMO to Consume Your Life? Find Out When Closed Beta Starts July 17

Trion Worlds announces closed beta for upcoming MMO will begin next week; you can pay $50 to guarantee yourself a spot.

The closed beta for Trion Worlds and XLGames' upcoming MMORPG ArcheAge will begin on July 17 at 10 a.m. PDT, the publisher and developer announced today.

Like ArcheAge's alpha, the level cap for the beta will be 50. And if you want to share your experiences with other people through video, screenshots, or live-streams? No problem, as there is no non-disclosure agreement (NDA) in place for the ArcheAge beta.

ArcheAge was created by Jake Song, the man perhaps best known for his work on the Lineage series. The game aims to separate itself from the pack by letting players adventure through the world at their own pace and by blazing their own trails. You won't find pre-defined paths.

Like most other MMOs out there, ArcheAge also has a PvP system that lets groups of players duke it out--but in this game, you can do so on land or sea. You can also build a virtual home and build farms that impact and influence the game's economy.

The ArcheAge beta will conclude on July 21 at 10 a.m. PDT. You can guarantee yourself a spot in the beta by paying at least $50 for "Founder" status. Trion Worlds also released a new trailer for the game today, which you can watch above.

XLGames is also working on Civilization Online, an MMO based on Sid Meier's popular strategy series.

this trailer looks so weird, like not the game experience at all.

trailer is bad, gameplay is better.

I have played a lot of MMOs. WoW (obviously), TERA, Aion, SWTOR, The Secret World, Wildstar, ESO, etc (the rest being several independent f2p ones). I can easily say that I have not played a game like this before. The gameplay felt good, character creation was ok, the class system was diverse, and those sandbox elements were just plain fun. I did not think that creating a trade pack and taking it to a vendor would be so relaxing. I know it sounds ridiculous. I was surprised too.

The only other game that left me longing and made me wish I had more friends to play with was probably The Secret World, due to its investigation quests and atmosphere, but that's another kind of experience entirely.

The major problem with this game is, you can write about its elements for a page or so, but you would be nowhere near halfway into explaining how it all works and how diverse it is. So I encourage people to just try it out because reviews and previews are no substitute.

I've been looking for a new MMORPG for around five years now. This is it. Awesome crafting and economy system directly influenced by players, player skill-based combat system (which means a lvl 30 can beat a level 40 if he/she has enough skill), unique sandbox features. I could go on, but I'm sure I already made my point clear.

I'm currently playing the closed beta and I'm having a blast. My life is ruined now.

This is a fantastic game. The 50 bucks is offset by the perks you get based on their cash shop value. I would pay 50 bucks for this game if that was the purchase cost, but it's free. I feel the cost is justified to support the developers so they'll hopefully have reason to continue releasing content. But don't take my word for it...

Why would I pay you to beta test a mediocre game with old features.

All these.people bashing it and labeling it as something its not.. Haven't even tried it. Doubt they even read the whole article passed Korean mmo. Lol. Trion is developing g it for the west and standardizing it. It is the greatest mmo to make it to the west. It changes the genre. No its not tera. Its like lineage and eve humped and had a baby... And that baby grew up and had a baby with assassins creed black flag. Its not Grindy anymore than you want it to be. This is a crafter's, traders, and PvP gamers dream mmo. Try it. If you don't. You.don't deserve to comment on it because your words are misguided and ignorant.

too many MMOs on the market just for developers to get a bit of extra cash on the side. because of this, MMOs don't look like they'll be evolving any time soon. hopefully in 10 years some game will redefine the genre..

I'm tired of korean MMOs. Played through 3 different games in the last 10 years, the most recent being Aion. In the end they're all the same grindfest of poorly-designed features, not to mention the inherent probability of them all becoming P2W to a point you just quit.

Decided to buy FFXIV:ARR and give it a try. Been subbed for 5 months now and I have absolutely no regrets.

I'm guessing this will be another MMO people will play for about 3 months before moving on to the next big MMO...

Nothing new, nothing unique. I used to love MMO but now, a good, compelling story is all that matters for me.

I don't think I will pay 50$ to get myself a spot..I'd rather take my chances with an invite.

Biggest mistake you can make is invest into something that you might think it's good and then getting disappointed by it (that's what I did with ESO and I hate myself for it).

Note: Trial chat is probably the funniest chat I've seen in an MMO. By trial mean like a courthouse trial thing, not a trial account. For those wondering if this is theme park or sandbox, it can be played as both depending on what kind of player you are.

@vrajitorugaoz its 2014 ...better grow up man....

@biggestnewb What? Please explain what it would take to "redefine the genre." Oh you mean like CoD has redefined the genre? Or BF has redefined the genre? Sometimes it's enough to stick to what works and implement it well - which XL and Trion have done.

hahaha.

@DeadorRock So you've made up your mind then, and nothing will ever change it? good job? This game was brought to NA by a western publisher (not a korean publisher like most korean MMOs). They wouldn't do that if they thought it would be unsuccessful to western players. There is no level grind in this game. The only grind is crafting better gear, but you know what that is a part of what makes this game great, it gives you something to aim for.  FFXIV is a great game, but once you hit 50 you do dungeons, raids, the god battles for, you got it better gear. for what reason? to fight bigger baddies. This game is is open-ended you create your own adventure. Maybe you want to be a bad guy? you can. maybe you want to be a "anti-griefer" and protect people. Maybe you want to be a mercenary for hire? you can do that.

Craft homes, craft ships, do trade runs, participate in siege battles, fight world bosses with your guild. etc.

SmawRpg

@The_Last_Paladi You mean just like most games? Or do you mean to tell me that games like WoW, LoL and CoD are the pinnacles of humanity's greatness because they are popular? Most things that are popular suck just saying...

SmawRpg
SmawRpg

@Arcius_Azrael Funny and here I thought making your own story is important. I must be playing games wrong because I couldn't even make it through Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Titanfall or any of these games with supposedly good stories.  Sure, the stories were great, but it was like watching a 12 hour movie with mostly boring, repetitive content between the interesting stuff.

123whatever

Wait... What game is out there that allows you to make a farm. Harvest trees. Ore. Fabric and food... Craft a boat. Sale across a vast ocean. And wage war on an enemy faction who used their resources to build a castle. Let me know.

biggestnewb
biggestnewb

@ndev222 @biggestnewb wtf? why are you talking about CoD and BF?

it's the exact same crap every time. same UI set up, same combat mechanics, same leveling system, same 1 faction vs the other. it's all the same shit over and over again with minor differences in between. at least ESO switched the combat system up a bit, a step in the right direction.

it's been over 10 years since we saw the birth of MMO games and nothing has really changed. while other genres have blossomed into completely different things. it's pathetic.

Lol I'm sorry but my PC can handle this game ten times over. But I'll still play ffxiv over this free to play garbage any day.

@hitomo @Darkhol0w I want to play ESO. But since I'm mainly a console guy, I cringe over the thought of paying monthly for a game.

@kgbinusa @Ombus @vrajitorugaoz  killzone shadow fall looks better than tera and eve.... your point being ? ... it doesn`t have to look the best to be a great game.. look minecraft.. and this game doesn`t look bad too.

SmawRpg
SmawRpg

@biggestnewb @ndev222 FPS you still shoot guns, you still have grenades, you still have to take cover. Genres, they exist. The combat doesn't need to be changed, tab target/action combat make no difference. They all get boring eventually and it comes down to preference. I personally find aiming and dodging an annoyance and I would rather lock on to a target and get into a pure ability war with them.

No Genre's have "blossomed" there are simply good games and bad games. MMOs get a bad rep because they are reviewed a month into the game, which IMO isn't enough to time for this particular type of game. I find most single player games, incredibly shallow and repetitive. Opinions, we all have them.

Also MMO isn't even really a genre by itself. Nothing about being able to play on a server with thousands of people is enough to say that a game is "unevolved"

@SphinxDemon same as the other... we are better without you :D we want a clean community .. no somebody who says a gama its garbage without actually trying it :D

@Dianezevic @123whatever Why would you compare any real game to a Facebook game? Even IF there was an FB game that let you do all this, why would I want to play a game where the "crafting a boat then sailing across the vast ocean" part for instance meant just clicking a boat icon, then clicking the sea or possibly the continent across it?

PinchySkree
PinchySkree

@Ombus @PinchySkree No it's just you are unable to realise that when you are sucking on that mediocrity you are note elsewhere in games that actually matter. Like The Old Republic biodrones.

@Ombus @SphinxDemon I would love to try this game but sadly there doesn't seem to be an option to do so without buying it (the "Founder status" price is basically a full game price)

@DawnBlue @Ombus @SphinxDemon you can have luck and get an invite onto an beta event or wait for a while when the game launches and play then... its f2p
