Iron Man Director Open to Making Another Marvel Movie, But Says It May Not Happen Soon

"It's 10 years later, and now I'm more of an elder statesman."

Jon Favreau's Iron Man films helped popularize the now-massive comic book movie market. Though the director has produced some Marvel movies following 2010's Iron Man 2, he hasn't been back in the director's chair for a Marvel film since.

IGN recently caught up with Favreau and asked what would draw him back.

"A great story," Favreau replied. "I know the people over there. I like them. I still executive produce the Avengers series and I like what they're doing a lot now, I do."

At the same time, however, Favreau said he feels like he's "made [his] mark" on the Marvel cinematic universe. He feels like it's in "good hands" now with people like Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo, among others.

"I couldn't be more impressed with [Civil War], and Guardians of the Galaxy I thought was an unexpected, delightful film. I just think how I fit in now might be different. It's 10 years later, and now I'm more of an elder statesman. But we talk a lot about how I could be involved there and I exist both in front of and behind the camera in the Marvel universe, which puts me in a unique position which I enjoy."

Favreau went on to say the team at Marvel is "always" looking for ways to more deeply involve him in the filmmaking process, which could include directing a future Marvel movie. He also said he worries that, since the Marvel cinematic universe has grown so much since Iron Man, he would have a lot to learn.

"I wouldn't be surprised if something pops up soon, but there's no one property that we're identifying that I'd want to helm up and shoulder. Because now that the universe has gotten so big over there, I don't know that I understand how it all fits together anymore. I was there in the early days when the universe was very small. Now the universe is very big there and they seem to have it well in hand."

Robert Downey Jr. recently said he would be on board to make a fourth standalone Iron Man movie, though the project is not in development at this time.

Favreau's latest film, The Jungle Book, came out on April 15 and opened at No. 1 at the US box office.
