iPhone 4S preorders surpass 1 million in 24 hours

Apple's latest smartphone hardware iteration surpasses iPhone 4 to set single-day preorder record.

New Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the stage in Cupertino last week to announce Apple's latest handset, the iPhone 4S. iPhone launches are often big events, and this time is proving no different, as Apple announced today that preorders for the device hit the 1 million unit mark just 24 hours after opening on October 7.

iPhone 4S is Apple's most preordered mobile device ever.

Preorder figures for the iPhone 4S are almost twice that of the iPhone 4, which first went on sale in June 2010. Preorders for that device exceeded 600,000 units within 24 hours, which was a then-record.

Externally, the handset is nearly identical to the previous iteration, but it has largely refreshed internals featuring Apple's A5 chip. Apple expects to launch the iPhone 4S in the US on October 14. The 16GB version of the device will cost $199 with a two-year contract. 32GB and 64GB variants will cost $299 and $399, respectively.

@Hvac0120 You seem to be missing quite a few points on what "Android is" Android is an operating system for a particular type of phone to say "Android has had 8mp camera's that weren't as good as Apples 5mp camera" is like blaming windows for how your mouse' scroll wheel stopped working. Anyone with limited photography knowledge can tell you throwing more megapixels at it doesn't constitute a better picture. So no NOT all 8mp camera's are as good as all 5 mp camera's AMAZING revelation you've made there, however there are plenty of 8MP camera's in the androids camp that were substantially better than the iphone at taking stills, and some substantially better at taking action photographs. So that's neither here nor there. Second, these benchmarks you speak of have already been pushed to the wayside for their inconsistencies, to attempt a hardware benchmark based on a sunspider java bench is silly, ontop of that the "published" benches were done using different versions of the test equipment, with the test on equal versions you'll see that Android PHONES perform better than even the Apple iPAD 2, let alone the iphone4s which comes in pretty low down on that same list. iOS hardware quality? Funny because a year ago that considerd how lightweight the product was, now that it's the heaviest on the market it's about being "solid" right? Funny how goals change when the competition tops you. You say attention to detail of an OS, what detail? There is nothing to it. The highlight of the apple OS is opera.. Everything else is as bare bones as it gets. Your phone is a gui grid and nothing more what "quality" is that? That's another one of those "It's not a fault it's a feature" references no doubt.. Oh your phone doesn't a respectable display size? Oh that's a feature because HD video is just too yesteryear, i'm past HD anyway i want to record retro VGA...Right? And Customer support, don't make me laugh Apple customer suppotrt is as hit or miss as Sony, it all depends on the mood of the person on the other end of the line whether you're going to be helped or not. And lord forbid you walk into a apple store because you're not getting help. they're selling you a new product. I prefer my customer support to ask me what happened, say "wow that's too bad, ok we're sending you a new phone enjoy" You used the word incomparable, i noticed without any positive, qualifier so your right apple CS is incomparable... Also please explain to me what iOS does that other OS's don't do, and vice versa.

@Crazyguy105: "Ancient tech?" Come on. There's a small number of Android phones that match or surpass the iPhone, but it's not exactly a dinosaur. If 4G coverage were actually there, it would be a big deal for the iPhone to have it, but it's going to be next year at the earliest before it's a phone-selling feature for the majority of users. And I'm not up on all the latest developments, but even the "iPhone killer" S2 has a substantially lower-resolution screen, and much lower ppi. Look, I'm not saying that the iPhone is the best thing out there; for a lot of people it's not. I just don't understand the hatred. If there were an alternative that were absolutely, obviously better, I might understand calling it a "scam," but there isn't.
Secondly, the iphone OS/Hardware battle has NOTHING in common with the console wars because they are on even ground when it comes to comparatives.
I do not agree that the operating systems are on even ground. there are things that iOS does that the others don't and vise versa. Whether it's the interface or an app or a specific function, there are things that are different. This is directly comparable with consoles. Even ignoring that point... The point of my post is that people are arguing about phones the same way they argue about consoles. Each person has different reasons why the phone they choose is best for them. Saying one is better than the other is really BS because it all comes down to the buyer and what will work best for them. I think you completely missed the point of my blog.

Hvac0120
Hvac0120

@Tyreeceholmes You are disillusioned. Android has had 8MP cameras for quite a while and most of them produced worse photos than the 5MP on the iPhone 4. Android has had dual-core CPUs for about a year and yet those available are now benchmarking lower than the iPhone 4S. I like Android phones. I like Windows Phone 7.5. But there are reasons why iOS is still considered the king. The quality of the hardware, attention to detail in the OS, and the customer support is incomparable to what you can find on any of the competitors. These are the things that justify the cost of iPhone. Sure, Android phones will, again, surpass the specs of iPhone with months. Yet the iPhone will continue to be the most popular smartphone out there. Android OS will still have to implement the use of these new specs and that will depend on manufacturers to keep providing updated drivers. There are benefits to owning Android over iPhone, but the specs don't make much of a difference without an OS and apps that support it. As it stands there is nothing on any iOS competitor that makes the iPhone hardware seem insufficient. The reason you are finding original iPhones for 40-50 is because it is months after I sold mine and the iPhone 4S has now been announced putting it further behind. And still... $40-50 for an original iPhone is still a good resale value.

Infinity_Gauntl
Infinity_Gauntl

Really who cares about iPhones anymore. I find itr funny that people really place personal value on what phone they have. The only way I would care is if they turned the vita into a phone.

Tyreeceholmes
Tyreeceholmes

@Hvac0120 The resale vale on an iphone does not stay "relatively high" (and I say relatively because even though YOU managed to get 100 for a first gen, you can easily find a first gen for 40-50 dollars) because of it all being in house, it stays relatively high because there are so few models. If you go back and find a Iphone 3G for sale you're still only talking 2 Phones ago.. Progression on the iphone is abysmally slow, in house manufacturing has nothing to do with the price staying high. In house manufacturing SHOULD make for the price to be substantially lower than a company that has to outsource all of it's parts. Secondly, the iphone OS/Hardware battle has NOTHING in common with the console wars because they are on even ground when it comes to comparatives. The Iphone has not been on even ground with it's competition since 2008, and it remains in a firm last place to this day. It doesn't matter if you're talking Clock speed, screen resolution, price, available memory, battery life, carrier options, or OS options the iPhone remains in dead last and will remain in that position until they decide to do something worth a damn, which isn't going to happen in THIS generation or the next generation of iphone..it's october of 2011, a full 15 months after dual core cpu's hit the market... Lol to the people who think think getting suckered into one of the most expensive phone contracts in North America makes this "a good deal"

The Siri Voice feature kinda tempts me. Sucks it isn't included in iOS 5 for everyone, especially iPhone 4 users. Significant GPU/CPU upgrades as well as antenna upgrades seem not to be mentioned as much as the camera thing too. Come on $200 is a good deal for that phone.

wow what sheep im sorry but every time there is a slightly upgraded version of something that apple makes so many people flock to it just so they can own a 3rd 4th or 5th edition of the same f***ing thing. damn what a waste of money just so i can get some useless features that i use in the company of friends and they say "thats cool" then use it 3 more times before another upgrade *double facepalm*

@Rottenwood: Agreed. However, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony also have corporate manufacturing partnerships with Foxconn; as well as Cisco, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Intel. Therefore, those taking issue with Foxconn's labor practices will have a difficult time locating quality 'guilt-free' gaming hardware.

@kweeni I don't think Apple is smart, it's the people who want to buy always the last stuff even if they don't need it. @Rottenwood That's true but not new, and it's the same for everything that's produced in China.

kweeni

As much as you might like or hate Apple, they're smart. Releasing the same stuff over and over with only a few improvements and a high price and having it sell millions every time = win. Kinda like Activision with CoD.

MERGATROYDER

DAYUM! Now, with that aside. Samsung Galaxy SII still has better "EVERYTHING" for being a six month old phone. I do appreciate how Apple crammed in better hardware without messing with the design. I personally don't like Apple, but I may have gone to the Dark Side, IF they would have bumped the screen to 4+ inches.

@deathstream well said... The iPhone 4S is not a....
...piece of ....
It's actually a darn good phone. And if you are eligible for an upgrade, it's worth consideration. It then comes down to personal preference between Windows Phone 7, Android, and iOS.
I have an iPhone 3GS and I really don't see why I should drop another $200 on a phone.
You can sell your 3GS to offset most of the cost of the 4S. So unless you just got your 3GS, there's almost no good reason not to. One of the benefits of Apple keeping everything in-house means that the resale value of the phones stays fairly high. Just sold an original iPhone this summer for $100. This phone OS/hardware battle is starting to seem very similar to the BS I always read regarding the so-called "console wars" in which I reply with My Console is Better Than Yours... The same concept applies to smartphones.

Tyreeceholmes

@deathstream You're forgetting some key points... Google has already "one upped it" considering the dual core has been on the market for quite some time now, not to mention the post 1ghz clock speeds are already being shuffled to the back of the line. You're forgetting Apple charges more tier for tier for their product, you're forgetting that the "competitive marketplace" is alive AMONG the android phones to the point that it is benefiting the consumer... The only time you could rightfully say the iphones competition is "beneficial" is in the event that the 2 competing brands actually resulted in some cheaper prices for the consumer, that isn't happening, the ONLY thing that brings apple prices down is shelf time.

LOL probably more than a half of that million buyers have IPhone 4 and Now they buy the same phone with a S and a bigger camera.....Probably they will brag with it "look at me i have an IPhone 4S , and you a have an old rusty Iphone 4 , YOU are so outdated" (legally blond stile)

Wow. All you have to do is say "Apple" and the mindless bottom-feeders come out in droves. Sad, pathetic little little creatures who think they are cool for hating something popular. Same idiots who flooded movie sites about how bad Avatar was after they'd seen it 4 or 5 times. Apple is no more greedy than Google. I wouldn't buy a Droid simply because of Google's attacks on net neutrality. That and the malware. And the fact that I don't mind paying for my entertainment rather than pirating it. The Droid/iOS battle is good for consumers. Each side is pushing the other to innovate and the real winner is us. Despite it looking identical, the 4S is a much more powerful device than the iPhone 4. And then Google will one up it and Apple already has 5 in the pipeline to one up that. And iOS 5 hits tomorrow. Guess how much that greeedy Apple is charging for it?

The iphone is slick, fast, with a brilliant display. But I absolutely despise texting on one. I like buttons and lights. And, I would never give a penny to a that uses overcharging to cast the illusion of elegance. Apple is greedy, which is why they release the same phone each year -slightly improved.

Now, this isn't the most credible source seeing as how I don't like apple in the slightest (well Ipod Touch was pretty cool and turning it into a phone was great for a while) but I heard that the 4S was poorly received. If this is true, the fact that they just made 200 million in pre-orders in the first day alone would show that humanity is just a big pile of consumer whores.

It's $200 if you're eligible for upgrade, and I really doubt most of the orders are. After all, they probably bought the previous iteration of the phone less than a year ago. They're paying $300-$400 for a new phone annually (discounting monthly fees). I'll happily keep my free (again, discounting monthly fees) Android for at least two years, thanks.
