iPad mini debuting this month?

"Major Apple investor" says press invitations for iPad mini going out October 10, release expected later in the month.

by

Apple's long-rumored iPad mini may not be far off. A "major Apple investor" speaking to Fortune has heard it from "multiple sources" that the Cupertino, California technology behemoth will distribute press invitations for an iPad mini event on October 10.

Is Apple going small for its next iPad revision?

If press invitations do go out on October 10, and if Apple sticks to its previous scheduling tactics, the event itself may take place a week later on or around October 17. If this is the case, the iPad mini could launch to consumers the following week.

Press invitations for Apple's iPhone 5 event went out on September 4, with the event itself taking place on September 12. The new smartphone went on sale September 21 and has sold over 5 million units thus far.

Nothing is known about the iPad mini, but competition in the tablet market has ramped up of late. Last month, Amazon announced revisions to its Kindle Fire line; Google has its quad-core Nexus 7; and the Nook HD from United States bookstore Barnes & Noble ships next month.

The third iteration of the iPad was released in March, and sported a 9.5-inch screen. An earlier report suggests that the iPad mini will boast a 7.85-inch screen.

I might buy it.

Why? I have an iPhone but its functional but not a lot to study or read PDF's. My dad has an iPad, its great for reading PDF's but it's too big.

I will use this iPad Mini to study, watch documents in a comfortable way (for me), i will download apps that *** I already bought over the last years and because i  know how to use each app***  , i will use my iPhone 4 for calling, emails & MP3.

My iPad Mini would be my "documents reader", videogame console ( GTA 3, Infinity Blade, etc) and to take notes.

So yep, it's great for people like me that thinks the iPad it's too big and the iPhone is good but not great for playing or reading big documents. ( i want it for calling and emergencies)  and mostly because i already invested a lot at the App Store over years.

Now i hope it's good and it's cheap.

That's a 'no.' It's more commonly known as the iPhone! Give me a break...

I've got an ipod touch, and also old samsung phone.. but going to be buying the iphone5 this week because I'm getting left behind technology-wise.

But why the hell they feel the need to make a miniature ipad is beyond me?

Absolutely pointless.

Eventually Steve Jobs' legacy will fade away. I'm no fan of Apple an never have been, but even I can't deny how brilliantly Apple's products were marketed to people during Steve Jobs' last 8 years or so of his life.

Right now the company is benefitting from that wave of hype which explains why the iPhone 5 could be so popular even though it is clearly an inferior product compared to its closest competitor.

But eventually that hype, or novelty, will wear off and people will hop on to the next big thing. I can't see Apple maintaining their current level of sales over the next couple of years as long as the company stays in its current state.

Their current attitude in terms of the products they are pushing out there is actually reminiscent of RIM in a lot of ways. They were happy to have had such a large share of the market and never really imagined their position would be in any danger as long as they continued bringing out new products regardless of any innovation or revolution.

And look where RIM are now. A mighty fall from grace indeed; hopefully Apple end up suffering worse.

You know what this going to be.  Basically a Samsung Galaxy Note minus the phone part, thats it.

I love these Apple news announcements for "new" products, they entertain me.

I can already see the Apple crowd wetting their iPants, packing up their iCamp equipment to build up in front of their nearest Apple shop.

Oh, the joy Apple brings to my life, please carry on, masters of viral marketing.

Looking forward to the iPad micro and iPad macro in a few months, yay !

@rarson Perhaps others will enjoy having a multi function device instead of just a book / document reader? This new iPad mini will most likely compete with the Kindle DX price point in an attempt to win back book reader market share. Who knows... maybe the iPad mini may even have a e-print simulation functionality and a matt display?

damo320
damo320

@warhawk-geeby I think the iPad mini allows Apple to compete better with the Kindle Reader on both size and price point. At the moment the kindle has cornered the book reader market because if you just want a book reader there is nothing as compact at that low price. Now that Apple is bringing out a similarly sized iPad but with all the functionality of Apple portable devices they can regain a large portion of the book reader market that the Kindle Reader took. I personally think its a clever defensive move and good competitive strategy overall. Unless you are a big book person there would be no reason to have this over any other Apple portable device.

@u1tradt The difference between Apple and RIM is diversity. You can't make a logical comparison between the two companies if you understand that point.  Apple are no longer a company that puts all their eggs into one basket. Once a corporation diversifies there is near limitless potential to what they may uncover or make there next launch pad for success.

Mkeegs79

@u1tradt It can't be inferior if its the fastest and most powerful smartphone out there right now. Some Androids might have better stats but its been proven that the iphone is superior in speed and power. That is fact and I don't care about any of them. I don't even have a cell phone.

After the iPad Mini comes out, they can sue Amazon for preemptively copying them with the Kindle. :P

So obviously you've never actually looked at a Kindle, huh? The new Fire HD has an 8.9" IPS screen with 1920 x 1200 resolution, and it's only $299. I don't see how Apple can compete with that.

damo320
damo320

@Danny_KickAzz  @warhawk-geeby They run a nice OS but the phone hardware Nokia puts out is very cheap. Hold one in your hand and you'll immediately know that.

rarson

 @Mkeegs79

"It can't be inferior if its the fastest and most powerful smartphone out there right now."

You're overlooking a huge factor here: software. It could be a supercomputer shrunk to phone size and that wouldn't matter one bit if there is no software for it. The product that Apple offers IS inferior, because the software (from the OS down) is inferior.

u1tradt
u1tradt

@Mkeegs79 Hmm let's see. iPhone 5 boasts a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU and 1 GB of RAM, impressive, I suppose.

Samsung Galaxy S3's North American, South Korean and Japanese models have a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU and 2GB of RAM. While the international version of the S3 has 1GB of memory but with a quad-core CPU which is clocking 1.4 GHz - still faster than the iPhone 5.

Go on. Make another comment that makes you look like a typically ignorant Apple fanboy.

Like it or not? Huh? I don't care. These are game machines for people that aren't gamers. We all know that, right? Also, if they are going to announce Apple devices, then what about the rest? What about every Android or Windows device, are we going to get news on that? I don't need another tech site, I want Gamespot to be a gaming site.

damo320
damo320

@Danny_KickAzz  @warhawk-geeby These new resolutions are already here... its just the trickle down effect that will take a couple of years. Once all TV's, monitors, touch screens etc are all the seamless PPI that resolution tech race is ended. All you do to push that as a selling feature is then additional enhancements like 3D or new surfaces like electronic paper. Really what we are witnessing is the end of screen based resolution race now that the human eye limitation has kicked in. In terms of phone screen tech Apple got there first with the retina display on their iPhone 4 release 2.5yrs ago. Everyone else may claim more pixels than a retina display now while playing catch up but the fact is more pixels beyond what is perceivable by the human eye (which is what retina display was all about) = a hollow / meaningless claim given that our limited human eyes can't make out any difference from this point onwards.

Danny_KickAzz
Danny_KickAzz

@damo320  @warhawk-geeby Well having  high Resolution/PPI is surprisingly a big deal these days..since the tech is still young..For a great example of such would be the use of Multi-touch, touch screens which at the time was a young technology...years later its now a standard. So soon High resolution/PPI will be the new standard but in the mean time that would take years to get there... Yet Certain phones manufacturers will be at that point early as it did with multi-touch.

damo320
damo320

@Danny_KickAzz  @warhawk-geeby Yes but what I was getting at is given the plateau in perceivable pixel resolution which is currently occuring... does that mean anything now or going in to the future? In 2 or 3 years time when every phone has a screen with a PPI which is so high that it matters not to the human eye what would be the point of marketing that as a selling feature? To hold PPI up as a selling factor at this late stage in proceedings is neither here nor there. It is almost inconsequential.

Danny_KickAzz
Danny_KickAzz

@damo320  @warhawk-geeby Well man ha as you say "claiming higher pixel content than the Lumia" " is that a worthy "added bonus"? "  On paper then of course it would be an added bonus :D but does that mean its a better phone? possibly...When your researching Tech specs do you only look at the Resolution/PPI and only judge the phone of it on that fact alone!? nope, But when your judging a phone, and just of if it happens that Higher Resolution/PPI was higher than other competitors is that to you a bonus? then yes.. ^w^

damo320
damo320

@Danny_KickAzz  @warhawk-geeby If it helps you sleep better at night buddy ;) Screen resolution for all media will within the next few years reach a maximum threshold. After that it becomes about improving the definition and quality of the content shown on those amazing screens. Just out of curiosity... if another phone came out claiming higher pixel content than the Lumia but to the human eye those extra pixels may as well be invisible / not noticeable is that a worthy "added bonus"? :P lol

Danny_KickAzz
Danny_KickAzz

@damo320  @warhawk-geeby Yeah I feel yah for what your saying about PPI...But you cant deny High resolution or PPI adds a difference no matter how high  it may be....So in other words its an added bonus with the Lumia 920.

damo320
damo320

@Danny_KickAzz  @warhawk-geeby If you tried hard enough bro you'd find videos of people hammering nails into wood with dried hardened dog sh*t. Doesn't mean I think its better than something engineered. PPI is redundant the moment it is high enough that pixels are not visible to the human eye. Hence resolution has a maximum cut off point because of the limitations of the human eye. So while being first on the market with a high PPI was worth bragging about - it essentially is a non feature as all future screens will eventually plateau at the same end point.

damo320
damo320

@rarson You should choose the software you prefer bro but as far as hardware Nokia is one of the worst on the market. They do cheap better than everyone else - I'll give them that.

Danny_KickAzz
Danny_KickAzz

@damo320  @warhawk-geeby So if the material is all Cheap (As you say..) then why is there videos hammering nails into wood with the phone to prove how strong the material is!? Also with the PPI yet  its something that will  give people courtesy to gloat over everybody else's phones :P also  Higher PPI just adds to the deliciousness.

rarson
rarson

 @damo320

Yeah, it's cheaper because it doesn't have an Apple logo on it.

As long as the phone doesn't break in my pocket during normal use and can withstand several drops relatively unscathed, the most important thing in a phone to me is the software that it runs, and unfortunately, while the iPhone 5 is great hardware, the software just plain sucks. iOS just isn't as functional, customizable, or easy to use as Android, and the way that Apple locks the OS down really sucks.

damo320
damo320

@Danny_KickAzz  @warhawk-geeby All encased in a cheaper container. There is a reason it is cheaper. The screen isn't the be all end all either. Once you have gone beyond a certain PPI there is little consequence because the human eye will perceive little difference.

Danny_KickAzz
Danny_KickAzz

@damo320  @warhawk-geeby  Lol Dude are you Kidding?? I Own A Lumia 900 and it is probably one of the best phones out there! (and yes i used an iphone 4s and a lumia 900 tops it...Dont judge till you actually use one and for a fact you will be pleasantly surprised) also have you looked at the specs in the 920? it has a higher PPI then a Iphone 5, greater camera, and it has wireless charging...ect!

WP8 sounds like it's a pretty good OS from what I've heard. Definitely has some advantages over Android, like smoothness.

rarson

 @u1tradt

The iPhone 5 is definitely faster than the dual-core S3. Kudos to Apple for a good design, their first custom SoC. I'm not sure that it's faster than the quad-core S3s, but from what I've read it doesn't sound like they are all that much faster than the dual-core S3s (probably because software isn't really utilizing the two extra cores). So I'm guessing that the iPhone probably still is faster than the quad-core S3, because it's about as fast as an iPad.

The other thing is, the iPhone has good battery life, better than either S3. So from a hardware standpoint, the iPhone 5 is impressive. The OS, however, sucks.

Arkinhas

@u1tradt  @Mkeegs79 Actually you sound an Android Fanboy yourself... If you read his comment right, you can see how CLEARLY he stated "Some Androids might have better stats but its been proven that the iphone is superiour in speed and power."

And he's not wrong! In fact it was tested agains a S3 and was faster then it, despite the hardware differences! So before insulting anyone, think twice and read their comments correctly!

PS: I'm no Fanboy myself, but I've read the same article he did... so Go take a walk calm down and apply water to burned areas.
