Investigate your own murder in a new PC game endorsed by Double Fine's Tim Schafer

What would it be like to solve your own murder? That's exactly the premise of a new adventure indie game from Los Angeles-based developer Sam Farmer, who launched a $75,000 Kickstarter campaign this week for a PC project called Last Life. At press time, the campaign has raised $48,552 from 2,328 backers with 24 days remaining.

According to Farmer, Last Life is "sci-fi noir adventure game" that is set on a transhumanist colony on Mars. You play murdered detective Jack Parker, who is 3D printed back into existence to re-open his case and investigate his own demise.

If that plot sounds familiar, it's because Square Enix's Murdered: Soul Suspect also tasks the player with solving their own murder. That's where the similarities end, however. Last Life will be told across three "engrossing" episodes, Farmer says.

Farmer says Last Life was inspired by adventure games Kentucky Route Zero and Telltale's The Walking Dead series. Like those games, Last Life will focus on atmosphere and storytelling, and it will also challenge your interrogation and deduction skills, he says.

Last Life has drawn the praise of adventure game veteran Tim Schafer, who gamers know as one of the main designers behind the Monkey Island and Psychonauts franchises, as well as the action game Brutal Legend. On Last Life's Kickstarter page, Schafer says, "As soon as we saw it, we loved it. And we knew we wanted to get involved and help out in any way that we could."

As a means to do that, Schafer's own studio, Double Fine Productions, will assist Farmer and his team at Rocket Science by providing advisory and distribution services for Last Life. The first episode of Last Life is expected to arrive in May 2015. You can read more about the game at its Kickstarter page.
