Insomniac's Fuse delayed

Insomiac's multiplatform co-op shooter pushed back by at least a month to a release after April 2013.

Resistance and Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games' first multiplatform title Fuse has slipped from its intended March 2013 release date. The third-person shooter will now be released between April and June, EA has announced.

The release slip was confirmed as part of EA's Q3 earnings report, where EA also said that sales-conquering soccer sim FIFA 13 has scored 12 million sales and Battlefield 3 Premium had notched up almost three million subscribers.

Fuse is a third-person shooter designed around four-player co-op, and it incorporates Insomniac's iconic fondness for innovative weaponry. The game was originally announced as the cheerily-coloured Overstrike during EA's press conference at E3 2011, only to resurface as the aesthetically darker Fuse in August 2012.

Despite the controversial art change, Insomiac has repeatedly insisted that Fuse still retains a sense of humour and fun. Speaking to GameSpot in September 2012, CEO Ted Price said the challenge for Fuse was in "having a sense of humor that isn't campy but isn't so subtle that players miss it. And then integrating it into real-time gameplay so players hear emergent dialogue throughout the game that's relevant to what they're doing but also entertaining."

Well just as long as it ensures quality. I'm still looking forward to this! I'm still not understanding why this game is getting so much hate. It looks pretty awesome.

Kind of a betrayal to make it multiplatform, but then again, the PS3 version will be better anyway.

It's probably goin to be canceled, not that i care.

Generic third person cover shooter??? Really Insomniac? The story and characters better really draw the player in because the gameplay looks mediocre.

Dragon_Nexus

Can't they delay it longer so it looks like their original idea again? Not this bland, seen-it-before third person shooter rubbish?

Sad, the Overstrike trailer has so much personality. I just saw the Fuse trailer for the first time and a tear ran down my cheek.

This game looks rather lame. It looked cool before they changed the name.

Delay it even further and release Overstrike instead.

Of course it got delayed. If I was a game dev or publisher, I sure as hell wouldn't want my game coming out the same month as Bioshock Infinite.

One reason I think low profile games don't sell well is because, they put them close to bigger titles. One example is the games coming out next month like Metal Gear and Crysis 3 come out the same day. publishers need to have the less known games come out in the summer when kids are off for break. This is the best time to sell games. If Fuse comes out in June you bet i'll buy it in a heart beat. SO DEVS/ PUBLISHERS SPACE OUT YOUR GAMES THEY WILL SELL BETTER!

This one interest me, but unfortunately I only play at PC exclusively, it looks like Insomniac don't have any plan to release this game on PC platform, so yeah,, whatever, lol. good luck to them with their new IP, I hope it doing well

Not surprising, and a good thing for the game.  Too many shooters were coming out (many from EA!) around this time.  Just as long as Fuse don't get stuck going up against Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us, it should do okay.

Hey I'll take it. Dunno if its a day 1 buy but since I like TPS's, why not?

@blitzinD Had a chance to see the game. I can tell you it's pure crap. There are some good ideas, but they better work hard during that delay...

@BH14 Even less impressive is when you switch back to another character and theyre almost always (but at least 99% of the time) standing out in the open getting shot at, even when you left them in cover... -_-

@unreal_master This is what it was supposed to be. Thats why insomniac changed the style. The former art style was from very early in development and they found it did not fit with the type of game they were trying to make. Fuse is what it was meant to be.

Celiria_Rose
Celiria_Rose

@guildclaws except for the creative weaponry, leap system, teamwork based combat design, special abilities and all the other aspects that seperate it from the norm.

Generic refers to something that is the same as everything else. Fuse is not the same as everything else.

@PsychicKiller82 It is puzzling how the industry crams all their releases together so often.  October through December is just nuts most years, and it's hard not to think the less well-known titles that come out at that time get screwed sales-wise.

Dragon_Nexus
Dragon_Nexus

@Celiria_Rose @unreal_master That should have been a sign they should have changed what the game was supposed to be then.

But I don't buy this anyway. You don't release a trailer with a cartoony art style and humourous dialogue if you intend the game to be played straight with realistic graphics.

Nothing ages faster than photorealistic graphics. Giving your game a distinct art style and personality is what makes them stand the test of time.

spammehardo

@Celiria_Rose @guildclaws Extensively boring levels designed around shouldering behind chest high walls that are absolutely freaking everywhere and peekabooing enemies is still generic no matter how many sprinkles/chocolate covered weapons you put in it.

Ad-verse

@Atheosis @PsychicKiller82 Yeah, I assume that the industry does this to collect the most profits possible before their "financial year-end". People most often buy games (for themselves), or give games as gifts, throughout these months; more than any other. A lot of us (myself included) forget to take this into consideration, when the  annual summer-time drought comes along. I guess that is because we buy games all year long (mostly for ourselves), while common consumers usually buy holiday gifts for family/friends.

Example: my little brother (he is 13), buys a few games throughout the year, but when the holidays arrive, my older brother and I buy him a few games, our parents buy him a few games, grandparents buy him a few, aunts/uncles, friends, etc... So, once the holidays have ended, he has received 2 - 3x the amount (or more) than what he bought himself throughout the year.

Having his birthday at the end of the year helps, I'm sure;  and he is beyond spoiled.

@Celiria_RoseWhy am I getting the impression that you're either an Insomniac or EA employee? Here putting a PR spin on what is clearly a lame duck. Deal with it, Fuse is a lackluster run of the mill cover shooter that most don't want and hopefully won't buy. Overstrike was what we all wanted - a shooter with a distinct art style coupled with witty dialogue and characters with personality.

Celiria_Rose
Celiria_Rose

@Dragon_Nexus @Celiria_Rose @unreal_master First off the game will still have humorous dialogue as multiple members of the team including the writer and head of the company have stated multiple times.

Second they left the overly stylized art style because they didn't feel it worked well with what they were trying to do with the weapons and combat. It didn't allow the feel to the combat that they wanted and which was the entire goal of the game from the start. Its simply a matter of they went with a more out there art style simply to have an art style but found it didn't work with what they were doing. The same way game developers cut features all the time because they realize it doesn't mesh or doesn't work in the game as they had originally anticipated.

Celiria_Rose
Celiria_Rose

@dogman7 @Celiria_Rose THEY SHOWED ARTISTIC INTEGRITY BY CHANGING IT. They stood by THEIR Artistic belief. They did not change because someone told them to. They changed ,as they have stated numerous times, because the old art style and overly comical tone did not fit with the type of game they were trying to make. This does not mean it is just like everyone else. It still has the over the top weapons and gameplay that insomniac is known for, it still has humor, it is still an insomniac game.

dogman7

@Celiria_Rose You make points that I or nobody else can argue with. However, I was excited for Overstrike when it was announced, it seemed entertaining and full of personality. Now that it has turned into Fuse it seems bland and boring. They had something that got people interested and instead of showing some artistic integrity, they backed down and are now making something that most people think looks like everything else, and if it looks like everything else, then why not just go with something that is already established?

Celiria_Rose
Celiria_Rose

@spammehardo @Celiria_Rose @guildclaws

having a cover system doesn't mean the game is built around just peekabooing around it. Or haven't you noticed the aoe singularity gun naya has, or her ability to turn in invisible and sneak around shooting without the need of cover, or dalton's portable forcefield designed for multiple players to shoot through, or izzy's crystalization gun allowing her to incapacitate enemies so they can't shoot at her allies so they can run around shooting instead of hiding. Just because a game has a feature doesn't mean its meant to be used in the same manner as every other game. Vanquish had a cover system and it was far from generic.

There are cover based shooters and there are shooters that have cover. Games like Mafia 2, gears and spec ops the line are cover based shooters. Games like vanquish, fuse and max payne are shooters that happen to have a cover feature. That doesn't make them generic cover based shooters.

Cover based shooters are designed more defensively. You use cover as a defense and wait for an oppurtunity. Fuse and other shooters that happen to have cover but aren't cover based are more offensive shooters. You don't wait for an oppurtunity you use your abilities to create an oppurtunity. Fuse adds onto that idea further by being designed around the weapons working together with each other for combination attacks.
