Insomniac not signed on for Resistance 4

Studio creative director Marcus Smith says sci-fi shooter series could be handed off like Spyro franchise, company ready to branch out.

by

Insomniac Games is slated to deliver the final chapter in its Resistance trilogy on September 6 with the release of Resistance 3. And if a Resistance 4 is on Sony's docket, as of yet, Insomniac isn't signed on to make it, according to studio creative director Marcus Smith.

Insomniac may soon be putting the Resistance franchise to bed.

Asked by Gaming Union whether the Resistance franchise will remain Insomniac's flagship franchise going forward, Smith demurred, saying that the studio has a number of other franchises it is currently pursuing and the alternate-history sci-fi shooter isn't one of them.

"As far as Resistance being the flagship, I think Insomniac has always branched out," Smith said. "I loved the Spyro the Dragon series when [Insomniac] did that. I didn't work there at the time, and I was bummed when they didn't work on the fourth game, but ultimately, I think it was healthy for them to move on. I think that's what we're seeing here."

"We've done Resistance 3 and we're really into it and proud of it, but we're not currently slated to do a Resistance 4," he continued. "So it would be hard to say it's any kind of lynchpin within Insomniac. I think we're thriving and branching out in a lot of different directions."

Smith also bought up the fact that Nihlistic is at work on Resistance: Burning Skies (the series' first installment on the PlayStation Vita), while Sony Bend handled the well-regarded Resistance: Retribution on the PSP from 2009. Insomniac is currently working on a new installment in the Ratchet & Clank franchise, as well as the multiplatform co-op shooter, Overstrike.

"We've got a lot of different places for the universe to go, so I could certainly see the series going to another developer," he said. "I'm sure Sony would want to find a high-caliber developer to do a good offering. I don't think they'd hand the franchise over to somebody who is going to screw it up."

IMO the first game was the best not cause it was the first...it is like CoD4.

CoD 4 just feels different from the modern warfare sequels in a good way same with resistance one.

I'll be sad to see the franchise finish at Resistance 3; I'd rather see Ratchet and Clank put to bed. Unlike Ratchet and Clank, Resistance has improved game after game. I'd understand if we had yearly releases but that simply isn't the case, any luck Resistance 4 will appear on the PS4.

Must admit I wasn't a fan of the Resistance games, didn't like Resistance 2 at all, though 1 was good for me. Glad they are still working with Ratchet though, more of a flagship game from them for me. The first two on the PS3 were great, not really bothered about the multiplayer one though, All for One; but good for the multiplayer fans. Good to know they are working on another Ratchet game too. I do hope I get the chance to dance the jig once more and then shake my booty! What's wrong Lawrence CHICKEN? Always will hold a candle for the Ratchet games.

all good things must come to an end.. just be grateful & appreciative that you are lucky enough to cherish playing the Resistance series courtesy of a badazz dev like Insomniac Games

I hope they stop here. Spyro the Dragon was a golden part of my childhood introduction into gaming and what followed on the PS2 was a travesty. I sure hope the same doesn't happen to Resistance, although it is a little less close to my heart as Spyro.

@Elann2008 I don't know what you were smoking when you played Resistance 1.. It was awesome. But hey.. each to their own.

To be fair to Insomniac they did a good job, the story is always brilliant and the designs are good quality stuff. The levels, the weapons.. you name it. However. When you compare the actual shooting to other FPS game such as Killzone it never feels as 'meaty'. In Killzone when you shoot a gun it feels clunky and powerful, but in resistance it feels kind of light. If the series does go to another developer then that's the only thing I'd want improving. That said though, I'd rather the series end on a high than be messed up completely. Good work Insomniac, good work indeed.

@endorbr Mark my words it will go away and maybe come back with a prequel. It goes like this 1st entry=beginnig 2nd=midle 3rd=end It's been going on like that for years now.

i hope they finish current resistance storyline with resistance 3... if there are plans for resistance 4 then i hope its a different storyline focusing on either past or future... and that insomniac come back for the this series... resistance series is one of my most fav. gaming franchise so dont want them given to other less credible developer and ruin it....

@X-RS - LOL at you for thinking that Sony will let a franchise this successful just go away.

Don't blame them, they're no longer doing Sony only games so it's probably time for a change to establish themselves multiplatform wise. Plus once you finish a story it's best not to force feed it just because its popular. Let's see something new first before you revisit it if you have a mind to.

Let just hope this is the last, as much as I love the Resistance games, there should aways have an ending.

i wish that they will make another spyro game or at least remake the first three games , that would be awesome.

i like resistance but i hope there will be a final conclusion in r3 , i dont wanna wait 3 more years to see the outcome , i wish there will be a resistance 4 tho but with a completely new storyline characters etc, in the resistance universe a few years/decades later in time

Good the story line is getting depressing. Resistance is the wrong word for the series. It would have been better called Slaughter. But a little off topic, games always have destruction in their worlds, but there is no AI construction going on. This would be cool.

I supose this is allright. Out of all the Insomniac Games games Resistance was the worst (excluding Disruptor). However it was great. If they hand it to another deleloper I won't buy it.

Making the game franchise too long and big can sometimes (most times) ruin the title. Sometime the developers, should make a good end for a story and stop.

A quote from user, "McDog3", a few names below mine: "Should just end it at 3. We all know what became of Spyro once it was handed off. It's better to go out on top than continue on a downward decline." I agree 1000%.

Resistance 4 should be released along with the Playstation 4. Insomniac could still do a fourth installment. But if they want to try working on other games for Playstation 3. Sony should let them. But when PS4 is released Resistance 4. made by insomniac could be a flagship launch title. In the meantime lets see what else they can come up with. Sony could hold 4th installments of other franshises until PS4 is released. Such as God of War 4 etc. Insomnaic could come up with another great franchise before PS4.

I want to see a new IP, not Ratchet and Clank, but something of that caliber.

Insomniac should just have the series end at 3. A 4th title would be nice and all but I can't see it happen.

As great as Insomniac is, I think they are making the right choice here, I couldn't possibly see a 4th, it doesn't feel right to do so.

This would be nice, but I don't want Resistance to become a series that never ends. I don't mind side stories but I hope Resistance 3 wraps up the main storyline.

If Resistance 3's story is well done and the multiplayer is as great as Fall of Man, I'm fine with this. Insomniac are very talented, theres endless opportunities for them. I would love to see a solid RPG from them.

Elann2008
Elann2008

Insomniac is overrated anyways. They just keep milking the Ratchet & Clank franchise and people eat it up just like Call of Duty. Resistance 1 was extremely overrated, bland, extremely boring game. Resistance 2, another mundane sci-fi shooter. I'm glad Resistance 4 will be handed to someone else. Hopefully a good up and coming developer that could breathe some life into the series, and most likely end it there with part 4.

This may not happen at all, but lets wait until we see R3 before we decide if it would be good or bad. I like the Resistance series but think it could have been more then it is, maybe R3 will blow everyone away and change that, but if R3 is at all disappointing I would be thrilled to see the series continue under a new company that might do better.

It's kind of too late for Sony to buy Insomniac, since they've gone multiplat and are doing pretty well for themselves. They missed their chance in that regard. However, they seem to have a pretty good relationship with Sony, so it's not like Sony is missing out on their goodwill. Also, it's nice to see the possibility of a franchise ending for once.

Sony tried to buy Insomniac before, but Insomniac didn't allowed it. I wonder why they didn't do that with Ratchet and Clank.

I'm glad they're planning to move on to newer and better things after Resistance 3. Honestly, I never really liked the series to begin with, though I might give it another go at some point. The only thing I find a bit strange about Insomniac is that they're apparently talking about moving on to newer and better things, then mention they're prepping a new Ratchet and Clank game. Not that I want them to stop making the series--quite the opposite actually--but it's almost a decade old now. Smith brought up their decision to move on after Spyro 3, but he says nothing of the fact they've been making R&C games for three times as long as they did Spyro games. Again, I'm not unhappy about it. In many ways R&C is like a Zelda franchise: almost timeless in quality. I just find it a bit contradictory and weird.

Ah good, always enjoy trilogies, anything more generally becomes tedious. Spin offs and handheld adaptations are acceptable though.
