Infogrames to stay the course

French publisher's financials weighed down by US operations; chief exec says the company will stick to its plan for recovery.

Atari reported its year-end financial figures yesterday, the results of which were keenly felt by parent company Infogrames today. According to a Reuters report, the French publisher today addressed its current financial state in a news conference.

"We are not changing our course," Infogrames chief executive Bruno Bonnell told the conference. "Our priority is to pursue debt reduction...the second priority is to work on the recovery of the US operations, which are far from being dead or in a desperate situation."

While Infogrames said it posted modest operating profits in Europe and Asia for the year ended March 31, its American operations more than offset those, leaving the publisher with an operating loss of 154 million euros ($194.6 million) for the year. The year before, it posted a loss of 33.9 million euros ($42.8 million).

In Atari's annual report, it blamed its results in part on poor retail performances by The Matrix: Path of Neo and Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure. As part of its turnaround effort, the company has said it is shifting its focus away from internal development. Earlier this year, it cut about 20 percent of its workforce and sold off the rights to a pair of games in development: TimeShift and Stuntman.

Infogrames stock closed the day trading down more than 11 percent to .47 euros ($.59). Shares of Atari slid almost 5 percent today, down $.03 to $.58.

ssj4_2004 elessartelrunya, How can You lose A quater in A Futon. It's basically just A pad on A frame..... Yeah it is... Well maybe he's fat and made a huge dent in it where everything goes and then it sinks into the padding. Well I hope infogrames gets back on their feet, I loved Driver 2... And Nascar: Dirt To Daytona.

I knew that Mark Echo game was gonna suck. Atari makes some horrible decisions when it comes to game development. I still don't know why they sold off the Civilization franchise. That's guaranteed to make money. They also lost the Unreal franchise. Seems like they only held on to the games that consistently fail. Oh well, this is what happens when you don't learn from your mistakes.

Well, I did buy Getting Up:Contents Under Pressure but at a madly discounted price so it likely didn't help Atari very much. Oh well, if they start making good games again maybe they will recover.

Infogrames suck. They ruined what was GT Interactive. GTI were onto something with Driver, but then Infogrames made some of the worst "sequels" I've ever seen. I don't think they have made one truely great game.

I myself could could not stay interested, started off great with the Samurai themes etc., but then got drifting - the complete absense of the character Tank in the game left a sour teste in my mouth. I was really interested in how he died, was hoping the Warchowski's would tell that in the story of the Path of Neo

this is a company that brought us Alone in The Dark on the PC a long while ago. We, as gamers, owe them the graditude of check out their next game, given its not a game thats all hype and image and sucky gameplay (cough ea strategy) cough

Just for the record (to those guys who say Atari makes Bad Games)...Atari releases the Bioware games...And those are some of the best on the market...unless you prefer the EA and Blizzard unoriginal crap games?

the last best game from Atari was UT 2004, but atari needs to get good games, not llicence crap like the matrix:path of neo and some urban street (which are awfull) like the Marc k Eckos game.

Atari needs to start making better games. Or Atari and Infrogames are going to both go down the drain.

It's really too bad for Atari. The Matrix: Path of Neo was a much better game than Enter the Matrix (although Path of Neo came out when nobody liked the Matrix anymore) and Indigo Prophecy was very original and played great. Sometimes its hard to make a profit no matter what you do. I mean look at Majesco (Psychonauts, Bloodrayne, Aeon Flux).

Really bad for a company like Atari that had good games like Indigo Prophecy. The Path of Neo came too late for its own good and I think selling TimeShift wasn't the best option, lets hope Atari / Infogrames returns to shape. Good company (Atleast better than EA IMO).

Personally, I'm not suprised. Games Like Matrix Path of Neo that are based on successful movies from the past(ie not a very recent movie) don't tend to do well.

It seems that Infogrames have a plan to recover from this huge blow. I really hope that they can make some profits next year.

Their Backyard Sports games were much better than their lame Mark Ecko and Matrix games. They should just stick to games that are simple and fun. P.S. I am an adult gamer that likes fun games not gimmick games like Matrix, Mark Ecko, or even GTA(yes I know that is made by a different company).
