Infinity Ward on CoD: Ghosts -- "Everybody thinks we're going to kill the dog"

"Maybe that's the expected thing we would do, so maybe it's not what we'll do? We'll see," says executive producer.

Despite Infinity Ward releasing no information that would suggest one way or the other, the consensus is that Riley the dog will die during the Call of Duty: Ghosts campaign, according to executive producer Mark Rubin.

"Everybody thinks we're going to kill the dog," Rubin told the Associated Press. "Maybe that's the expected thing we would do, so maybe it's not what we'll do? We'll see. People around here didn't know, and they had that same sentiment: 'We better not kill the dog.' The emotional investment for the dog here has been just as strong as what's happening out in the public."

In June, Infinity Ward community manager Tina Palacios said "it's a constant debate" at the studio about whether Riley will die or not. "But we do have an answer," she said at the time.

Riley has become something of a cult favorite since his original introduction as part of the Xbox One reveal event in May. After the initial reaction online--both positive and negative--Activision and Infinity Ward further detailed the canine companion as part of Activision's pre-E3 event for Call of Duty: Ghosts.

With this rise in prominence, Rubin said that there was an opportunity to feature Riley more heavily in the game, but this was ultimately avoided.

"There was a risk of shoehorning the dog into scenes where he wasn't originally going to be," Rubin said. "Fortunately, that only lasted for a few weeks and everybody got back to concentrating on making the game. It's great that Riley is so popular, but let's focus on the game. Let's have Riley make sense and not just put him in space or in a scuba suit."

It was also revealed in the AP story that two dogs--a German Shepherd named Ruger and a Belgian Malinois called Rico--were used for Riley's motion-capture performance. Rico performed the biting and tackling actions, while Ruger provided Riley's general movements. If players look close enough they will be able to tell the difference between the pair of pooches, lead animator Zach Volker said.

One of the biggest challenges during the motion-capture sessions was getting the dogs to perform as if they were in a real combat scenario, according to Ruger's trainer Chris Connell.

"In this environment, we didn't have trees or grass," Connell said. "It was like, 'OK, Ruger. Pretend we're in a desert area and act accordingly.' Ruger is like, 'Dude, this is a studio with mats like people do exercises on at the gym, and there's white lines on the ground.' Just trying to get him to act as if it was a real environment was the hardest thing."

Call of Duty: Ghosts launches on November 5 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will follow after.

I'm really glad they didn't add the annoying multiplayer hit indicators the campaign. They ruined Black ops 2 campaign with that lame X indicator. I just hope this game has bullet wounds and gore of the treyarch games! The one thing that has always sucked about IW COD games, is lack of carnage.

That can only mean that CoD: Dog Dayz is the next sub-franchise.

wow, are they really using the dog as there big sell for this game. I was thinking of giving this COD a try after skipping the last couple, but on second thoughts whats the point if this is all they can go on about

Probably, they'll turn him into a double agent...that would be a major twist to da story huh? Or maybe he'll just walk away with bitches before the credits roll...lol!!!

Everybody's making a big deal about the dog.

This is gonna be like Fable, and the dog will be there but not really do anything mind blowing, isn't it?

Hah when I came here, I thought "We're going to kill the dog" was a metaphor to "We are exacerbating this series to death." What a dumb article.

Looks fun but still more of the same with new polish. I'll get it as a gift I'm sure. It's not getting my hard earned money though.

The dog is not a "cult favorite" unless IW is secretly running a cult in their office, I've never seen anyone say man the dog is so cool, instead every comment is making fun of the dog with the fish ai, because both ideas are stupid. This is a sad excuse for a video game being released in 2013.

BS never had that idea! this cod dog is invincible ......

Dog death and fish AI, this is what COD has come to.

So they were going to kill the dog, but now they're not. Until a later DLC. META.

Also, these guys really need to learn the difference between 'cult favourite' and 'joke'

Also also, the fact that there was ever even a single conversation about having the dog in space pretty much sums up their capacity for scenario writing.

By everybody, he means the people around him. Kill the dog, don't kill the dog. It's not like the past games were able to effectively kill anyone off with any emotional impact. Killing a helicopter dog isn't going to change that.

Who are IW kidding? They haven't surprised us since CoD4 was announced. Of course the dog will die!

They're really relying on this dog as a main feature of their game, aren't they?

maybe everyone's hoping the gimmick does get killed, so you'll actually be forced to improve the gameplay. ha, who am i kidding, you'll never do that.

Who gives a f. I can't name a single person that plays COD to get story where they care about the characters. Do they really think that their audience is a bunch of 11 year old who will develop an emotional connection to a video game dog.

Haven't we heard enough about this stupid dog yet?

They aren't going to kill the dog. They're going to kill the FPS industry.

"Everybody thinks we're going to kill the dog"

Well, no. I think they are going to kill the FPS genre with help from EA. They will burn the market like Rock Band & Guitar hero did with the music instrument genre.

We already used the best dog possible in video gaming. Why they still trying to make a story about this dog ....

I've been fascinated with dogs (or wolves) in battle ever since I saw Snake Eyes befriend Timber in G.I. Joe.  Everybody loves a good dog and all the stories about their heroics in battle, rescue and their loyalty on the home front. Game developers love clichés, so no doubt there will be some touching, dogmance experience. I love seeing that kind of thing. I also love seeing wardogs in action like in Total War: Rome where they unleash a whole army of them and they kill until they are killed.  No dogmance there but still cool.

What if DOG slowly sinks into mud when you are in a swamp? Like in Neverending Story.

All this dog-thing  in COD is ridiculous, there's nothing original in that shit, stop talking about it. Dog-control has been in gaming since a long time and in game a lot less linear than this piece of junk. It was like the scene with snowmobile in MW2, too much noise about nothing or that missions underwater in MW3, seen before too...

if they don't kill the dog (which i'd rather they not) some ones else dies trying to save the dog.

Maybe there's like a trophy/achievement for when you form a really strong bond with the dog, and it will be called... Papa O'Riley

@AceJakk Hey, I got pretty emotional when I killed all those caged chickens in that one mission.

I was so upset that I couldn't deep fry them.

@Warlord_Irochi Yep! I've been so sick of FPS to the point I'm not even that excited for Half-Life 3 that much anymore.

Of course comparing half-life to CoD is heresy, but still.
