Infinity Ward discusses Call of Duty dedicated servers on Xbox and PC

Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin discusses working with Microsoft to implement Call of Duty dedicated servers on console.

Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin has spoken about the long-running process behind bringing dedicated servers to the Call of Duty franchise.

Speaking to GameSpot at Gamescom 2013, Rubin confirmed that dedicated servers would be coming to the Xbox One and PC for Call of Duty: Ghosts, though Infinity Ward is still finalising the details for dedicated servers on the PC. He also explained that the sheer volume of server space required to host dedicated servers for something the size of Call of Duty was one of the main challenges in incorporating the frequently requested feature into the shooter.

"One of the problems with our game, in a sense, is that we have so many players," said Rubin. "I remember that we looked into dedicated servers on console when we were developing Call of Duty 4, and the problem was that we could only fit four [multiplayer] games onto each server. So, you times that by how many games were being played, and it was going to come out to be more servers than every data center in the United States. It would have been impossible to do."

Server technology has improved greatly since Call of Duty 4 was released in 2007, explains Rubin, and the dedicated servers on Call of Duty: Ghosts will be powered by Microsoft's Xbox cloud. "Obviously the power of the servers grew, and we can fit more and more instances per server, which has helped a bit, and the fact now that Microsoft is supporting this huge cloud initiative, dedicated servers make a ton more sense. We'll have scalability, and we're not having to run data centers which we're not necessarily equipped to do. Having Microsoft do that is fantastic."

Rubin says that it is "fantastic" that Microsoft is investing in the Xbox Cloud, and adds that he believes the service will develop dramatically over time. "I think they're figuring [the cloud] out too," he said.

"[Microsoft] has phenomenally good intentions with what they want to do with it. If you look at Call of Duty 2 when we first launched on the Xbox 360, or Call of Duty 4 which was a massive leap forward compared to CoD 2, there's a learning curve for all of us as developers, and for Xbox themselves. There's going to be a learning curve as the console comes out. It's totally expected, and something we're excited about. Knowing that they're just going to get better--for me, that's a great thing to look forward to."

Rubin also spoke about the rise in reliable Internet connections and the effect it's had on creating "a massive shift towards multiplayer gaming."

"When people didn't have Internet on a regular basis, or when it was 28k baud modems, or even worse like 24 and 300, you couldn't really do a lot multiplayer wise. So everybody was focusing on single-player game experiences. Multiplayer, especially for stuff like Call of Duty, has taken off so much that we've become a major user of Internet traffic and space."

"So the infrastructure, the internet service producers, have all realised that and are starting to formulate their strategies for how they run their business around multiplayer social gaming. I remember on Call of Duty 4 we have problems in Europe because some of the ISPs here were bandwidth limiting video game traffic. We fought and fought with those guys, and literally sent people to those companies trying to explain what's going on, and fortunately today I think it's a significantly improved environment."

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and PC on November 5. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will be available at launch.

Titanfall will fail...

Main reason is the balancing issues with titans and soldiers...after less than a week people will send this crap game back because of overpowered and underpowered weapons/titans...and there will be endless patches to try and balance this game to try and make one side happy for a small amount of time...

If only the assholes had done this for MW2.............

welcome to this century COD. no more host migration and all that other shit. You can now have the same quality matchmaking that battlefield fans have had for years!

I'm actually glad it's not on ps4. Gives me another reason not to get Cod Ghost

Even with the severs the game will still play the same as all the rest.  The only difference is that there is no host.  Also there have been talk about MS testing DS on BO2 and it has not worked well for anyone.  Well all in all we don't know if this will be good or bad.  We also don't know if there are DSs on PS4 yet and even if there is not we don't know how it will run.    I would just hate to see sever maintenance once a week or day even if that is possible.

EA don't have any issues in using dedicated servers like Activision .

They want to burn our moneys .At least BF4 uses dedicated servers on PS4 .

bf3 has severs, no real difference that I have seen between that and cod as far as performance unless any one can show me I don't see a big deal

"discussing"? Oh for f*** sake you lazy pricks just do it. Half baked nothing games can manage dedicated servers and you are a multi-billion dollar franchise and it seems to be some far off dream. No excuse whatsoever for it not to happen and no reason the PS4 can't have it either.

since COD 4 or MW1 i dont have buy any cob because of the servers.

i have bad company 2 and bf3 i play only on PC and if this come true maybe ONLY MAYBE i will buy a cod again.

other reason is because they only use QUAKE engine since mw1 and in GHOST they still use it that is why since mw1 all cods looks the same

Why anyone thinks COD having dedicated servers on any console being a win is beyond me

probably going to be like the same Half assed dedicated servers on MW3.

I have little interest in Titanfall but you would think the same thing about Battlefield with all their diversity of Tanks, Helicopters and people just running around but I would say it is pretty well balanced so I am not dismissing it on being unballanced.

@TerminusX13 This. I really don't think people understand that with the new hardware in these consoles, dedicated servers for games like CoD aren't really going to be needed. The latency problem wasn't so much an internet problem, as it was a slower hardware problem.

Rainmakerxx

@fastharry Absolutely. MS has been building and investing in that network for over a decade.

@onixevil But i hated COD after buying the same game each year, so I stopped buying them. Then I got BF games for a while, but Origin blows and the little tiff between EA and Valve mean I can't play it on Steam. I waited, an Origin still sucks, an unless they fix it prior to BF4 coming out I'm getting Ghosts. Now they have dedicated servers again it's going to be infinitely better. Saying that just because EA had servers before on their games doesn't apply to the future releases of games.

I actually prefer BF over COD, but both are fun, however after using the Origin client for the Humble Bundle, I literally feel compelled to avoid it and every other game EA has a hand in, until they get their shit together.

@JoonKimDMD I like how everyone keeps saying poor PS4 users. Not one single rep has said Ghosts on PS4 won't have dedicated servers.

abroche

@JoonKimDMD lol why because Microcrap have dedicated server for the LOL call of duty ghost hmm and who cares, there you see a desperate move from Xbox to lure more people to buy the LOLBO,

battle field 3 and 4 have dedicated servers ON they on HOUSE nor from Sony servers center which make the only one playing more reliable

KommonSinse
KommonSinse

@Devil_wings00 You're right. The PS4 can have them IF either Sony provides them for free like MS does to all X1 developers, or Activision/IW pays for the servers out of their own pocket. And since Sony doesn't have the infrastructure in place for that, it leaves Activision to paying for them.

Eagllefirestorm
Eagllefirestorm

@Devil_wings00 Well actually the cost implications and the economics of providing a dedicated server once purchased they would also require on going maintenance since MS is providing the server assets there is no cost involved for the publisher. The cost of owning and maintaining an ever expanding data centre just to provide PS4 owners with Dedicated server assets would not be feasible.

I doubt Sony has the infrastructure in place to give Activation the same commitment MS is offering.

Eagllefirestorm
Eagllefirestorm

@FELOFLOW I believe the Engine is the IW Engine and not the QUAKE engine most games write their own engines since the cost of using someone else's is pretty high.

blackace
blackace

@Sonicgod Well PC developers had no choice but to pay for those servers themselves or just not include multiplayer online. Developers for Xbox One won't have to pay for them because M$ already has 300K of them for developers to use for FREE. They will be adding more over the next year.

KommonSinse
KommonSinse

@d3nR You like player hosts for MP? One player in the match having a huge advantage over everyone else in the match?

All Battlefield games run on dedicated servers, even on the 360 and PS3. They pay for them for a reason. It's not just some BS PR speak.

Eagllefirestorm
Eagllefirestorm

@d3nR Titan fall would not be possible without the MS tech in the back end so yes its a great idea.

Sorry didn't know Sony planned to rent servers off MS.

@twisted_outlaw @TerminusX13 Haha, are you kidding me? Have you played COD on console, especially with a party of people hundreds of miles apart, then played on BF3 with dedicated servers? It's an unbelievable world of difference.

@Eagllefirestorm @FELOFLOW The new en*HAHAHAHAHAHA* the new engine they are usng for a new game gor a nex gen console is the very same things  but limited as we have at the moment  for current consoles called frostbite 2 that is you new engine for the new game for the nex-gen

FELOFLOW

so why i only pay once for any game and i dont have to pay every month to play online in pc only u people are getting screw with 360 xboxlivegold shit and thanks to that assholes now all the consoles has a cost to play online

In pc i buy cod and bf and other games and i dont pay for play online

TerminusX13
TerminusX13

@Rainmakerxx @twisted_outlaw @TerminusX13 I get what you are saying, But those are two different game.  EA owns those severs and these are MS.  The game is not out yet so we don't know how it will run.  It might  run real well or it may just suck.  Don't get me wrong i would love to see DSs on consoles but that is not going to fix the game or the internet.

blackace
blackace

@BamaGoatt @Keivz_basic @COPMAN221ISBACK Well that's the thing. They can say it on Sony's dollar. Why haven't they? lol!! That's our point. They now had 2 big events and they haven't said anything about PS4's dedicated servers. None of the 3rd party companies have said anything. lol!!

blackace
blackace

@BamaGoatt @Keivz_basic @COPMAN221ISBACK No he's not. That's exactly what it says in the article. lol!! Bias trolls. We know that Sony has their own PSN servers and server for their 1st party games, but they have said squat about dedicate servers for 3rd party games. That's a fact.

blackace
blackace

@COPMAN221ISBACK @BamaGoatt Sony won't be using Microsoft's dedicated servers, that's for sure. The article clearing states the answer is NO right now for PS4 dedicated servers. lol!

"So that's not a no, but it's not quite a yes either? Will the PS4 and PS3 versions of Call Of Duty: Ghosts have access to dedicated servers?

Right now we'll have to say no, but as it stands this special relationship with Microsoft might just keep Infinity Ward from saying anything at all, perhaps to give it an imagined upper-hand in the next-gen console wars"

BamaGoatt
BamaGoatt

@Keivz_basic @COPMAN221ISBACK @BamaGoatt you have to understand the context of the announcement m$ paid for them to be there. For them to turn around and say yes ps4 will have them as well on m$ dollar is bad for business in the future dealings with m$.

Keivz_basic
Keivz_basic

@COPMAN221ISBACK @BamaGoatt

The article above strongly implied that there will definitely be dedicated servers only on the XO and PC. Your article basically says that there may or may not be dedicated servers on PS4. There are many possible reasons he was being evasive in that article, it's all speculation at this point.
