Industry vets form indie studio

Former Army of Two, Assassin's Creed, and Uncharted developers establish Montreal-based Red Barrels; working on new survival-horror PC game Outlast.

The Montreal game development scene has added a new player. A new independent studio named Red Barrels was announced today. Though its name may be new, its staff are industry veterans who have worked on franchises like Army of Two, Assassin's Creed, and Uncharted.

The company is currently working on a downloadable PC survival-horror game called Outlast. Due out sometimes in 2013, the game plans to explain how the most truly terrifying monsters are inside the human mind.

Outlast is set in the mountains of Colorado, and focuses on journalist Miles Upshur. The writer breaks in to the Mount Massive Asylum to get the scoop on why it has been mysteriously re-opened by a branch of a transnational corporation.

For more on Outlast, check out the game's debut trailer, embedded below.

Red Barrels joins a host of major companies operating in Montreal. Ubisoft, Eidos, BioWare and Electronic Arts have development outfits in the region.

I really hope this is a game I can't play for more than 5 minutes before changing my underwear. It looks like there wont be much/any combat which make for the scariest games for example Amnesia and Slender.

I like survival horror as a genre, but I want a game that is more like Clive Barker's Undying. Doesn't have to be as action filled with plenty of guns and spells to kill your enemies, but closer to that experience than Amnesia's "sh*t bricks every time a monster appears" mechanics. A game that rewards thinking/planning and gives you options to escape/defend yourself. Make it hard but not impossible to escape/defend yourself from the monsters. A bit of Mirror's Edge and a bit of Amnesia. I understand the reasoning behind Amnesia's gameplay, but that's not how I want to play a survival horror game. This seems promising though.

The trailer reminds me on Amnesia in terms of gameplay. It's looking like it will possibly be a non-combat game (Like Amnesia) that is centered around survival instead. I guess Silent Hill: Shattered Memories did this too, but it just didn't feel scary in that game (The game did have some really atmospheric and frightening moments, they just weren't during the monster chase scenes :P).

Either way, I'm always glad to see more horror games. They seem to be the genre of gaming that puts the most focus on  immersive audio, and that's my favorite part of a game :D

When I read the headline I couldn't help but compare the people from major devs teaming up to proffesional athletes doing the same thing. It will always bother me when an athlete goes from one team over to a rival, though. Sure they aren't completely similar, but it was the first thing that popped into my mind.

The two comments directly below mine prove how split we really are.

Looks like some influence from the spanish movie Rec or the shitty american remake, Quarentine. Though it looks really cool and it is going to be with the unreal engine 4!

Too bad this is pc, but anyway it looks great I would play it and it doesn't actually say it is a zombie game, they said MONSTERS.

Wow this game looks amazing! Man the PC gets the best and creative games. I wish console developers took more risks like this.

@tightwad34 That's a weird thought to have, because there really is no connection there.  They really aren't similar at all.  Anyway, this game looks pretty good.

@abnergoinbig But we don't have many hyped exclusives, though i agree with you that there are many great and creative PC games. That's why I play PC games (plus the mods, love the mods).

@DevaGolgotha I feel like there are a few things wrong here...Amnesia Hype?  I would say that is basically an oxymoron.  Frictional Games was an indie dev that created Amnesia, sold it for 20 bucks brand new despite having more gameplay and replay value than a lot of 60 dollar titles because of the story editor.  Plus, the game was creepy as hell.  I think that Amnesia got the love it justly deserved, personally. As for the Pie...a lot of horror games have come before Amnesia that have kept the genre alive in the minds of gamers.  I dont think these devs are looking to take a slice, I think they're trying to double the recipe.  I'm glad to see it, too, because this genre has long been neglected by publishers who dont see a market.

tightwad34

 @SlimeSwayze

There can be some similarities. When devs leave their company to team up and when athletes leave their teams to be on the same team, it is kind of similar. I guess one difference is that the devs started their own studio while proffesional athletes won't start their own team. Anyway, I was just writing what I was thinking. Probably pointless, but so are most of the things we do.

@Cactusgod Whoa whoa whoa.  Settle down, there.  Amnesia is a great game that I love playing and replaying: I never said I disliked it.  However, it kinda put more focus on survival horror without weapons.  I'm not saying it's a fifteen minutes of fame kinda thing: it did cause hype, though.  That's a fact.

@freddyhead  @Cactusgod I've only played Echo Night Beyond, but the others sound good.  I meant the first popular noncombat survival game, though.

freddyhead

@DevaGolgotha  @Cactusgod there has been a few survival horror games without combat Haunting Ground, Echo Night Beyond, Clock Tower 1-3 to name a few in cause you want to try them out they're all really great
