Indie developer defends Microsoft

Castle Crashers studio The Behemoth says it has "absolutely no problem" with XBLA team amid recent negative comments about Microsoft's developer relations policies.

by

Indie developer and Castle Crashers creator The Behemoth has spoken out to defend Microsoft and its Xbox Live Arcade team. During a recent Raptr Q&A (via Beefjack), project manager Emil Ayoubkhan said the developer's relationship with the Xbox 360 maker has been pleasant.

"We have absolutely no problem with Microsoft or the XBLA team," Ayoubkhan wrote. "We love working with them, and hopefully they enjoy working with us as well. I can't speak for other devs that may have bad mouthed Microsoft in the past, but that's definitely not the company that we are."

His comments came in response to a question about if The Behemoth would form a collective with other indie developers to address the "difficult" process of getting games onto XBLA.

"There shouldn't be any collectives formed to go against anyone else," Ayoubkhan wrote. "We should all be in this together and working towards making games that are fun to play."

"You'll always hear the negative side of things in the press, or from others, more than the positive aspects," he added. "It's definitely a lot more entertaining to read I suppose."

Most recently, Braid creator Jonathan Blow lambasted Microsoft's indie developer relations policies. He told Wired that the company's stance is to "put you through as much pain as you will endure in order to extract whatever [they] feel like this week."

Blow's next game--The Witness--will be a PlayStation 4 launch title.

Retro City Rampage creator Brian Provinciano also spoke poorly of Microsoft, claiming the company canceled the release of his game after he publicly spoke about the trials of the process. He further claimed that Microsoft forced him to resubmit the game, which resulted in an extra six months' work.

All I know is that Microsofts PR dept. is going to be working overtime once the 720 is officially announced. And when it is announced, I bet they won't address the issues in the media right now. They'll want the positive aspects to take hold before they confirm the negative.

Fact: People hate MS because of its success and size. MS, like Walmart, Starbucks and even MacDonalds were all once the little guys in the beginning.  But it was consumers like YOU that made them what they are today.  So if you have anyone to be mad at...look in the mirror.

Unlike Microsoft, they know how to not shoot themselves in the foot

Noooess... They should defend the Sony or Nintendo. :)

I think Microsoft is just super hardcore and I mean SUPER hard core about making sure these smaller independent games work properly and without any bugs. Just look on the Steam forums for a minute and you will find more user comments than you could possibly count about how this indie game or that indie game is simply riddled with bugs.

Lol @Saint311 is right. The Behemoth said nothing about defending Microsoft! Not only are they stating they have personally had no problems, but they're not judging anyone for good or bad. No one is defending anyone in this article. The Behemoth took a neutral stance declaring their personal status with the XBLA team.

Also:

"There shouldn't be any collectives formed to go against anyone else," Ayoubkhan wrote. "We should all be in this together and working towards making games that are fun to play."

I agree with this.

Did anyone even read the article?  Behemoth isn't even really DEFENDING MS (another misleading title by Eddie Makuch!  What a surprise!).  They just said they won't rip MS and they're focusing on trying to make good games rather than divide the industry.

Wow one indie developer defends microsoft out of tons who badmouth them. Sorry but I still see the xbox as awful for indie developers (especially with the  Fez incident).

Well, they're probably being paid off to say these nice things, lol, or they're simply ignorant to other's situation, maybe Microsoft spoils Behemoth so they stay loyal, but hopefully it really is a misinterpretation and Microsoft is alright, but the way I see it, they're not that great, especially since no BBT on PSN, like wadafuq dude :/

Well of course The Behemoth isn't going to say anything bad about Microsoft.  That doesn't mean there isn't a problem with the way MS does things.  Looking at what Sony's doing with the PS4, the worst thing MS can do is respond by doing nothing with regards to the 720.

I think some of the reaction here is honestly quite ridiculous. Bribery is like this decrepit excuse gamers pull every time someone from the other side of the curtain says something that doesn't mesh with their views. There's always exceptions in the norm, so what if they didn't have any problems? Doesn't invalidate anything that's been said before. So it's not all bad for everyone, just something we should probably all be aware of before continuing the shit flinging.

Aren't the Braid and the Retro City Rampage creators, individual people? Isn't The Behemoth a part of Newgrounds? Of course Microsoft would treat bigger companies with more respect. I don't think it's right, but this really isn't a situation unique to the gaming industry.

not everyone have bad time, logical fallacy to think otherwise. still, problems with devs and m$ lately.

Microsoft folds 10k in thousand dollar bills and places it in Behemoths pocket and says:"Too many negatives are out there about XBLA..give us some good press"

@Gravity_Slave people hate MS for their failures, crappy cheap os and hardware. CHEAP shittty quality products..they are also douches. I've hated MS since windows 95

@Gravity_Slave

No people hate MS because it has a monopoly on PC operating systems.

People hate Walmart because they bribe local politicians into giving them unfair advantages over their competition and force their employees to take federal handouts to make up for low wages.

People hate McDonalds for using fake meat but McDonalds has changed that lately.

Starbucks isnt hated people just poke fun at how many their are.

@TruthSerum808 I agree with you there.  Developing for Xbox and Windows Phone for that matter, Microsoft is super tight with the guidelines as they are ultimately concerned with the end user experience.

@TruthSerum808 consoles are a closed hardware platform...If there was a bug then its the developers fault and would be ridiculous

How is XBL awful for indie devs? If anything it grants a huge outlet for indie gamers to get their stuff out in Arcade.  Do your research.

Ahh yes, and thatgamecompany is not that great, especially since no Journey on XBL.

@longestsprout
Well its not really the "gamers" fault, this is the perception of the industry.

We don't trust the reviewers because of indiscretions, we don't trust the developers because they overhype and they under deliver, and we don't trust the publishers because they lie and enforce DRM that buggers the consumers over.

Honestly this bribery thing is a bed of the industries making, and its up to them to fix it.

@sladakrobot @obsequies no just when they receive outrageous publicity about being the evil empire of the month, not to mention the articles that were headlined on IGN yet didn't seem to make it to gamespot outlining the indie devs that were upset with how M$ handled them and situations..read or think before you insinuate

@Gravity_Slave @edpeterson MS doesn't allow indie developers to update their games without paying a feww witch if I recall was at least 30k...an amount many might not own to update their own games.

That's because IGN is a completely unprofessional news outlet. Since when did indie devs bitching about things become news? Isn't that what they always do? It's like celebrities who talk about politics; who actually gives a shit?

@a1br0wn @obsequies I happen to be the prime minister silly I know everything. Right because microsoft as a company and the representation of individuals in the company are the exact same thing. This conversation is over, you are an incompetent child

And calling them "douches", really? Do you actually know anyone who works at Microsoft? Because I got to meet a few people who work at their headquarters in WA while I was living in Seattle, and they were pleased with the benefits and the general treatment of employees.

idk what he meant, but in all honesty, pc gaming is not as lucrative to developers as counsel gaming is. -I am saying this from my our pov and I have no actual statistics to prove this, this is my opinion.

So when you take that "ka papo?" game recently which was about the abusive father of the developer [didn't play it, just heard about it] the dev said that PSN didn't get them much money and he was hoping that going to steam would break them even.

so yes, there are sales on the pc OF COURSE, but when you look at all of the amount of different  franchisees on the array of consoles you see that mostly  game developers care more about counsels rather than PC.

I agree that PC IS BEST KOREA!, in the sense that it is really powerful, and I am actually thinking about building a pc by the end of the year, but when it comes to the amount of sales and where the foucus of almost all of game developers is, it is on consoles, yes many games get developed for PC, but they almost always make them for consoles and there are much more game franchisees that are exclusive to consoles and are not present on pc.

pc will never die, that is stupid. unless technology get erasied by some sort of metieor and we get back to the stone age, we will always have pcs. I mean there are people , that I know, still play PS1 games and old 3DO games like once every month or so because they like them. and pc is a timeless thing you can upgarde 100times and still call it pc.

bottom line, only MMOs are really pc exclusive, Witcher/BF/and anyother game can't be called a real pc game cuz it is avilable elsewhere. pc is not dying, but if you have some friends who play games (real life from college/work) they mostly will have consoles rather than some gaming pc, unless you call facebook games pc gaming, then idk what to say lol :)
