Infogrames has announced the release of its latest 3D space simulation, Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos. The game is the sequel to the first Independence War, which was released in 1998 and received critical acclaim for its detailed flight models, complex plot, and intricate gameworld. The sequel continues this tradition with a powerful new 3D engine and a rich, dynamic universe.

The game is set in the far reaches of space in the distant future. Players assume the role of Cal Johnston, a pilot that has escaped from a maximum-security prison in order to avenge his father's death. Along the way, Johnston and his fellow escapees will be drawn into the midst of events that start the second Independence War.

Independence War 2 includes a number of improvements over the previous game, such as a full multiplayer mode with support for Internet and LAN connections; an advanced graphics engine with rust, decay, fire, and flare effects; dynamically generated space traffic; and nonlinear gameplay across 16 solar systems.

Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos was developed by Particle Systems, and it is now available in stores for an approximate retail price of $39.95. For more information, take a look at our full review of the game .
