IllumiRoom to be featured at Xbox 720 event - Report

Noted Windows blogger says new Kinect-enabled technology to be shown off tomorrow, subsidized next-gen Xbox plans scrapped.

Microsoft will demo the Kinect-enabled IllumiRoom video system tomorrow during its next-generation reveal event. That's according to noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott, who has a track record of accuracy.

The IllumiRoom technology can alter the appearance of a room, trigger apparent motion, and extend a field of view, all in the name of enabling new gameplay and viewing experiences. A proof-of-concept video of the system is available below.

In addition, Thurrott said that Microsoft's plans to release a subsidized Xbox 720 have been scrapped. Previously, it was believed that Microsoft would offer a $300 Xbox 720 if gamers signed up to pay $15 per month for two years of Xbox Live Gold.

A Microsoft representative was not immediately available to comment.

Microsoft currently offers a similar plan for the Xbox 360, allowing gamers to grab a system for $99 when they sign up for the two-year broadband plan.

GameSpot will have full coverage of the next-generation Xbox presentation, which begins May 21 at 10 a.m. PDT. Microsoft will reveal the platform and its vision for the future of games and entertainment during the event. Infinity Ward will also be on hand at the presentation to show off Call of Duty: Ghosts.

I thought the point of games was to make you feel like you're part of the story, not a friggen dave and busters skee ball game. That thing might be cool for young players, but it seems super distracting to me. Maybe its a gimmick to distract you at the lack of system upgrades. Who here has a reasonably dark space to play in? I have reflective stuff all over. I'd be like a dog chasing squirrels trying to play that. I'm also waiting for a law suit for some poor kid to have a seizure with all the flashing lights.

Sounds like a distracting gimmick. Probably won't keep up with 60 fps either.

And people laugh at Wii U's new controller and the system ?  Look at the stupid things Sony and MS have been doing lately.  This strange ass **** and the back touch screen by Sony that may see the light of day on their regular controller too for the PS4.  LOLOL

Oh and Sony the PS3 still sits there collecting dust cuz the GUI is horrible to use and I only really bought the POS as a 3D/blu-ray movie player that we might sometimes play used games on.

It could be interesting with horror games.

I think this could be amazing for immersion, but that's all.

It seems gimmicky.  Focus on the games.

It looks like I'm among the minority that doesn't seem to care about these new ways of gaming. IllumiRoom and Oculus Rift don't interest me in the slightest.

That would be great. MS has a problem where their research team makes cool tech and their business division takes ages to put it to the market, let's hope that's changing.

so what have we got so far, lets sum up........

Mclaren have their batmobile in a game, um, COD Battlewhatever 5 is coming, and a whooshy lamp thingie controlled by Kinect. That is controlled by kinect, not powered by it ladies, projectors are extra,

illumiroom reminds me of the Ambilight in Phillips tvs, but it has a punch. Now installing on in my room is goin to be tricky too small for it. Its a good idea like 3d tvs but are people rushing to the shops to get 3d tvs? Dont think so! What about the lamp? how many hours? how much is a replacement? their the questions i would like to hear about.

Ive given up on the Xbox brand and Microsoft with how underwhelming the 360 was. Maybe when I see some game info that isnt about brown shooters I might take a second look.

1- buys this

2- cool the first half a dozen times

3- goes into the closet next to the dj hero table, wii fit board and those flashy pants you bought that time.

What I always wondered was what happens when you stop paying for the Gold subscription? Does Microsoft send out MS representatives to your house to repossess your Xbox 360 or are u just locked out of the system till you pay?

I would definitely prefer that Microsoft bundle the IllumiRoom with the 720 instead of Kinect. That thing is awesome!!! It's completely immersing you into what's going on on-screen. Regardless, that's the type of innovation I want to see console makers doing.

funny thing is microsoft announced that the illumiroom wouldn't be ready to use until about two years after the release of the xbox 720, if you buy the console at launch and expect illumiroom at launch, you'll be mistaken.

@fillup0 Don't think it's meant to.  Seems a non-HD peripheral accent sort of thing.

Just like my accent speakers for surround sound.  Which aren't necessary, either, but add to the immersive experience.

When you started comparing the WiiU to anything, your credibility went out the window dude. Just enjoy your game less system..

PixelAddict

@KustomCulture You're doing it wrong.  Look towards a bookshelf or out your window.  You see a tightly defined area of focus.  That's essentially like this.  The tightly defined area of focus is your TV, and the other stuff is peripheral input.

I for one think this is really cool.  I'd buy it.

@svaubel

considering the 360 and PS3 had mostly the same games for the whole gen... then you must think the PS3 was underwhelming as well.... thus you are giving up on gaming then?

Epicurus-Reborn

@bouff Its like a teaser trailer for a movie, Since the event is so close, MS/new sites would want to generate buzz right before the big reveal.

Landsharkk

@OB_Shah You can expect Sony to do the same with the PS4.  Sony will undoubtedly shift more of their 'free' online features over to their 'paid' online subscription.

Sony must find a way to make a profit with the PS4 or else there may not be another Sony console.

adam270391

@Geminon @svaubel

The ps3 has had a LOT of top-quality exclusives throughout the consoles' entire lifetime, while the xbox 360 HAD a lot originally but the amount has dwindled since.

@AngelCage-2 @Vodoo Gamespot had a video from Microsoft of what it does. If you didn't watch it, you should. It's incredible.

That's for sure. Sony lost 5.9 billion in fiscal year 2012. We need 2 big console makers for competition and great games. Nintendo has made it's last console with the Wii U so no need to worry about them. Odds are both Sony and Microsoft are both gonna charge. Either way we find out in a couple weeks at the E3 announcements.

Geminon
Geminon

@adam270391 @Geminon @svaubel

by a lot you mean a few.... and XBOX still has exclusives... most of which have become wildly successful (gears, halo, forza, fable). most of the exclusives for PS3 were one and done games that didnt sell.

@TheWatcher000 You must think 1080p is just not quite detailed enough to buy, either.

I watched it.  Thought it was impressive.  And before you get all "you cheerleader" on me, realize i own all the systems and like the innovation Sony has (with the touch pad on the controller, among other things).

TheWatcher000
TheWatcher000

@Vodoo @AngelCage-2 I Did Watch It.  I was underwhelmed, as were most people.  And I think you probably got paid .79 a word to write this nonsensical cheerleading crap.
