id Software president leaves after 17 years

Todd Hollenshead departs Doom studio to pursue "other personal interests."

id Software president and former CEO Todd Hollenshead has left the Doom studio after 17 years with the company, publisher Bethesda has confirmed.

"After many years with the studio, Todd Hollenshead decided to leave id Software to pursue other personal interests," Bethesda said in a statement.

"While Todd was not part of the development teams, he was an integral part of id Software's success as the business head of the studio, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors."

Hollenshead joined id Software in 1996 as CEO, before taking on the role of president in 2009.

The most recent new release from id Software was 2011's Rage. The studio is currently working on Doom 4, which has been rebooted.

man looking at the time when he arrived is the exact time that ID went from being my absolute favorite company where I had bought all their games, to hating them and never paying for any of them ever again.

Hope he doesn't fubar up his next home.

Yeah carmack is still there but when I think ID I still think their older games are what defines them. Doom and quake are among the greatest most memorable and maybe most important FPS games ever made.

I dont think doom can really ever be topped

what ever does i am sure he just want to be happy. looking at DOOM and QUAKE. we are still awaiting it on PS4 and XBOX ONE and PC. i don't know if i want a classic feel to it like DOOM 3 has. i want new and fresh. things we have never seen before that would surprise long going fans of QUAKE and DOOM.

Wait a minute, if you're going to Valve, I will feel somewhat betrayed after so many years playing, modding, blowing Doom and some other etceteras...

A game every century is not enough for him? Some people are difficult!

Hollenshead, please don't go to Valve. A century is what it takes just to work an idea.

That dude is buff yo. And look at the little shorts on the girl in the background. OH MY . . . What a lucky guy, to be able to leave an awesome head honcho job like that and go out with hot chics in the background for his interview. Why leave?  That seems stupid, but whatever his reasons are, I am sure the dude's set and has some cool investments. . . And a little vacation of course.

Good luck Todd in all of your future endeavors.  I had a great time with Doom and Quake over the years and can't wait to see how this move plays out for you and the gaming public.

Isn't this gamingworld some unbelieveable bullshit? First Doom 4 is heading to be CoD(oom) and then when the CoD thing has been killed and Doom maybe going in better direction, id president leaves id software.

Im hoping that Doom 4 will bring pure fps back, so we can get the **** out of this cutscene, qte, regen hp, slow aiming (ADS) dominating noob gaming phase and back into some real gaming.

Doom 3 was good and it became great with mods, hopefully Doom 4 will also be good, but there are lots of other shooters out there.

Thanks for your hard work in bringing us some great games over the years Todd. Thanx for helping to bring us  games like Wolfenstein, Doom, Hexen, Rage and Quake series, just to name a few. The First Person Shooter and Multiplayer genre would not be the same without you and id software. If it was not for id software,  games like Half Life, Counter Strike, Team Fortress, Medal of Honor and Call of Duty probably would not have existed or reached the popularity they have today without id's leading edge engine tech.

The Quake Engine was the first 3D game engine that used three dimensional figures instead of two dimensional sprites. Furthermore Lightmaps and dynamic light sources were used instead of static lighting. It may not seem like much now but at the time it was a major breakthrough in the gaming industry.

Good luck in everything you do Todd.

I can imagine "Bethesda" being the reason for him leaving.  While iD still owned themselves, this would have been an insane move... but now?  If he stays in the games industry, it'd be interesting to see where he goes.

But seriously, a reboot of Doom?  What's there to reboot anyway?  It never really had enough of a story, even in Doom 3, to justify the claim it's being rebooted.  Don't get me wrong, I've always enjoyed Doom, but enough with the marketing bullshit. Reboot means "redone without the involvement and/or approval of the original creators, but we the conglomerate own the franchise now so, suck it!"

What happened to Bethesda, they used to be goo.... oh wait, Zenimax, that's right.

@Crush_Project I'd be far more worried about what the next Pres will do to ID. Imagine doom 4 being whored out with DLC and microstransactions

maybe mix DOOM enemies into team death match or death match. i am not saying play as a creature. it just needs something. hoping for the best. like put a hell knight in there and he will just try to kill everyone or half way into a match have a big beats just break through the environment trying to kill everyone. then everyone stops shooting each other and just trys to kil this big beast.

@roman4545

Well he is part of a different gaming gen. You know the one when we used to have heavy metal in games while killing enemies? Games were also made by men for men. I want that gen back.

@quakke that guy joined the company 2 years after doom 2 was made, and all the stuff the company worked on since has been god awful horrible...

quakke

@John_Read

"rage 2"

No. Please just no!

No Rage 2 unless it's not heavily CoDified. Rage was the first id game i really hated because it's so unoriginal and simply bad. CoD is a bad game so what can you expect from Rage when it has been heavily designed around CoD? That's right, nothing. The outcome will be bad as long as CoD is involved in it.

quakke
quakke

@Crush_Project @quakke

I disagree. id made Doom 3 and they owersaw the Quake 4 production so that Raven Software will make it good. And both of those games were pretty darn good.

Just look at Wolfenstein 2009 what happened when Raven and Activision only worked on it, it became a god damn callodoody jamscreen shit. Totally unrelated to Wolfenstein at all.

And yes. Sure that is about it, what id made because John Carmack has said himself that they went on with that really small team which he handcrated ( by firing ppl) and therefore developed Doom 3 for like 7-10 because of so small team.
They did not want the same thing to happen to Quake 4 so they gave the development to some trusted ppl and only owersaw the production of the game. So technically they have made those two games. Rage is the first garbage id has ever made and they have already acknowledged that Rage was shit and that is prolly the reason why they scrapped Doom 4, because it was heading to be Rage Nukem Forever CoD.

Oh almost forgot. Since you only said up to Doom 2. There were few more games then. Quake 2 and Quake 3, which were also fantastic.

Massacher

@erix43 @quakke he's talking about when fps gaming was good. and not the shit it's become today with all this "realism" crap that has pretty much fucken ruined the genre.

Crush_Project
Crush_Project

@quakke well I stopped enjoying things after quake 2 personally, I was just saying this guy had joined the company 2 years after doom 2 was completed.

But ya that having been said, I thought the first level and demo for doom 3 was great, really cool computer system looked good, great artwork etc etc, but after that I got hung up on the fact that most of the enemies in the game were the exact same just with different skins and the enemies teleported in so you couldn't play smart, and when they did teleport it was almost always to the exact same point behind you.

Just get good at pivoting in place everytime you hear that noise or get good at hitting a flying skull or any of the other small flying clone enemies and theres really nothing left to the game.

and I could never get into quake arena more then a few games.  Just lost the quake feeling at that point imo, and I could never play it all that much.  It always just felt like a cheap generic shooter to me.

Crush_Project
Crush_Project

@Massacher lol and I would argue the exact opposite to that.

we live in a childs world today of cartoon shooters and over the top run and gun action junkies that only rely on muscle memory for skill, and cant find their way out of a paper bag.

the only shooters I can even play anymore tend to border simulators, require actual thought and planning, and bring a lot more challenge to equation.

I don't understand how your taking away of realistic features can somehow add to your experience unless you are a casual gamer and should just go watch a movie anyways.
