'I still want to make ZOE sequel' - Kojima

Metal Gear creator reiterates his desire to make a Zone of the Enders sequel during this year's Tokyo Game Show.

TOKYO--Back in October 2009, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima announced his intention to begin work on a new installment in the dormant Zone of the Enders mech-combat franchise. His enthusiasm for the project evident, Kojima went as far as to promise that a sequel would get made, despite leaving the question of when unanswered.

Kojima is still keen on a new Zone of the Enders.

Two years on, it seems Kojima has not forgotten his promise. Speaking at this year's Tokyo Game Show, Kojima reiterated his intention to make a ZOE sequel during the live stage show for the recently announced Zone of the Enders HD remake. As translated by Japanese gaming news site Andria Sang, Kojima announced that a ZOE sequel was in development at one stage before stating his surprise at seeing so many people turn out to hear about the ZOE HD remake. This latter point impressed him so much that he announced he would return to his office to speak to his staff about restarting work on the ZOE sequel.

During the stage show, Kojima also revealed that the HD remake of the PlayStation 2 games will include three to four minutes of entirely new animation.

The last title in the franchise was Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, which was released in 2003 on the PlayStation 2 and received a strong critical reception. Kojima has previously stated his disappointment with the game's lackluster sales, saying setbacks in the game's release schedule prevented it from hitting sales targets.

@SgtStrungOut First of all why are you responding to an article that was posted on September 17th? Have you so little do with your time that you try and reignite every single discussion that is aimed towards you? I never said marketing dictates how good a game is. If you read my comment I stated that marketing dictates how good a game would sell. The marketing campaign actually helps with sales if you have been paying attention. You know little about me and you call me a casual gamer? I don't care if you love watching hours upon hours of video cutscenes. If a marketing campaign doesn't make your heart beat faster then why should I give a fuk And besides you've given Battlefield 3 a 10 and Rage a 9. Ha, your opinion doesn't even matter anymore.

@MemberUnknown So by your logic, marketing dictates how great a game is? SCREW THAT! I play games for gameplay, not to watch a marketing ad circus that only appeals to non gamers and casual gamers like yourself. I am a huge MGS fan and guess what? I wouldn't love MGS any more or less if the marketing was nonexistent. Marketing has no affect on my judgement and decisions. I am not a sheep.

The LEV battle sequence in ZOE 2 is still one of my most fond and most intense gaming moments. I would support a 3rd outing for Jehuty, but would stil wishl they'd used the ingame engine to show the cutscenes like ZOE 1 than just use anime like ZOE 2

I remember playing Metal Gear Solid on the Original Playstation and seeing the poster for ZOE. Kojima admits to dropping the ball on the first ZOE but more than made up for it with ZOE 2. I tried the first one but held off on the second one till years later.... I missed some great gaming. I can still go back and play ZOE 2 and still get a kick out of it. One of the few rare gems that shows no aging as time goes by!!

ZoE is definitely the most fun i've ever had with any mech-type game. I wish Kojima would develop the next Macross game as well.

I'm ashamed to admit that this is a game series I missed in my video game hiatus. I hear nothing but good things about Zone of the Enders. I'm hopefully they'll bring this back so I can get my hands on it and see what it's all about.

ZOE2 stands as one of the best action games in the PS2, absolutely loved every minute of it. Seeing a new entry in the franchise would be a marvelous thing.

@steelmouth @scatterbrain007 I have to disagree. The first one was actually what got me in love with the two. Not for Leo, not even for ADA, but for the suspense of Anubis, and hes relationship to Jehuty. When Jehuty got owned by Anubis, i was like "That aint right. Imma fight him later." And i knew then there had to be a sequel. The second one, gameplay, was definitely an improvement. In my opinion, we should start on a clean slate instead of a sequel. Kinda hard to have Jehuty without Anubis. But still. Steelmouth, im sure you realized by now you are judging PS2 games from over 8 years ago. The graphics and gameplay were very advanced for their time. Normally, the Japanese Big Robot franchise would be Gundam, but since they failed to produce a good game, ZOE took the reins and did an amazing job. When the HD release comes out, give it a shot.

With all of the sequels that have been released ever since the last ZoE, you would have thought this would be high priority. But I'm willing to wait. I loved the first two.

@steelmouth The first game wasn't that great. The sequel however (Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner) was spectacular. Look up the second game when you have a chance.

@MemberUnknown They are trying to find someone worthy as you say. But none still has managed to break new ground. It's not that Kojima wants to hog all the action. He has let someone else handle other titles of his (ZOE) while he performed as an Executive Producer in the project. While they can give the IP to another person, would you really want to see or risk someone change a game to the point it doesn't feel like what it was before? (Front Mission Evolved, SSX: Deadly Descent) I'm glad they tried to make some changes but some just don't really work. I would rather have them new bloods prove their worth with a new title than hold an old IP to make changes which would probably hurt it than improve it. Yet, why would they risk selling a new IP when they can just reuse an an older more popular IP over and over until they milked all the juices out of it? Heck, they can even use Kojima Productions and still be able to make it news worthy (Castlevania: Lords of Shadow). There will be someone to succeed Kojima, Shigeru, Spielberg, Hideki Kamiya or someone else for that matter. But they don't need another person's IP to succeed them.

Cephrien

Z.O.E. 2 was YEARS ahead of it's time. It was one BEAST of a game and it still is to this day. Kojima gracing the community with a 3rd title would be nothing less than an honor.

@SgtStrungOut But of course, we are not mere men, we are Gods whose touch turns everything into Gold. The very fact that you have made your statement clearly shows how little you know about the world we live in. Every year we see game developers like Shigeru Miyamoto displaying their titles at game shows such as E3 and you think that if he were to sit at home and play his banjo that the game would actually sell? People want faces and images, they want visual abstracts of color and energy that push the senses. That is why we often see Microsoft spend over $100 just to promote Halo 3 and see Warner Brothers launching a lush advertising campaign for the next Harry Potter movie (not anymore). And besides we measure huge in different ways. What is disgusting to you is art to me, what is too much for you is too less for me, and in the words of Cobblepot "What you put in your toilet, I put on my mantle piece." And believe me, I am a man of my word.

@MemberUnknown All people who work in marketing and advertisement should KILL THEMSELVES. Anyone who actually believes that they are a huge factor are NOT gamers.

MemberUnknown

@aots_twilight Product endorsement is a huge factor when dealing with the most profitable mediums, and gaming is just as similar as motion pictures. I would agree that the Metal Gear franchise consists of some excellent games which have kept many busy for a long time. But that does not mean that the permission for creating another game can't be passed onto another designer within the organization. They would have to prove themselves to be worthy as Hideo and express their creative thinking in ways which would assure their place at the helm of the project. There is always going to be something or someone better than you. You just have to know when to stand down and let somebody else take the limelight.

I am glad enough people turned out at the stage show to see the ZOE HD footage. Because if it wasn't for that. Kojima probably wouldn't have known just the scale of people that are still interested and vary much in love with his series. Here is hoping to a ZOE 3 by the end of 2013-14

aots_twilight

@loopy_101 People endorsing their own product? Again, not so unusual. It's part of marketing. The same way Shigeru is with his Nintendo titles. And just like Spielberg, the mere mention of his name already creates a buzz. Kojima's name and face is tied with MGS and people want him to handle every MGS title than just leave it to somebody else. If some no-name guy announces MGS without Kojima. How big of an impact would it leave? Remember the MGS 4 announcement in 2005? People were ecstatic when they found out that Kojima will be handling it. Konami knows this. Why do you think they promoted him all of a sudden? Yes, he has a name and position in Konami. But he still has to answer to someone. And generally business-wise MGS sold better than ZOE. It doesn't matter to them if the game is good, if the sales were not as profitable as they hoped it would be.

By the time Konami green lights a ZOE game is about the same time Kojima will own all of Konami.

If Kojima can have the same amount of over-the-top enthusiasm about REMAKES of 2 of his works, you can't deny both the creator and the games themselves are worth the money. I actually haven't played any of the ZOE games, but I sucked every minute I could out of the MGS series. I think this just sold me on the HD collection of both series.

MemberUnknown

I have always seen Kojima do his job in the industry and how much he has enjoyed sharing the visions he saw as a child, with the gaming community. I hoped that he would make the transition to another franchise around 5 years ago, but he hasn't and is now thinking about developing the ZOE series while having his hand in the Metal Gear pie. He is now 48 years old which makes him only 10 years younger than his idol Shigeru Miyamoto. Just makes you think how long you have to devote yourself to something before you throw in your towel and go home for the night.

I think capcom could learn alot from konami. Re-release previous titles to build up interest in an old IP. Then hit them with a brand new entry into the series. You make mad ca$h, and the fans 'love you long time'. Rather than teasing fans with an new entry into an old IP, then telling them to go jump off a cliff.

aots_twilight

Kojima isn't milking MGS. Konami is. And so does other Companies with their IPs.

@MGSKojima: This generation alone there has been: MGS4, MGS Portable Ops, MGS Acid, MGS Acid 2, MGS Online, MGS touch, MGS Visual Novel, MGS Peace Walker, MGS Portable Ops Plus. And then there are the HD remakes of 2 & 3, panned for PS3 AND 360 aswell as the Snake Eater 3DS remake. I would mention Rising but that could be called a spin-off. I'm sure there also a bunch other side-projects I forgot to mention but please give me good reason to assume he isn't working the well with the beloved franchise either. As much as I love Kojima, his fate as the Metal Gear guy was sealed long ago and the chances of him making anything besides it now is nil. Sdnatcher doesn't count.

I am always looking forward to the next Hideo Kojima game, be it ZOE or not. Still, I love the ideas that the first installment presented with fighting robots while trying to make sure that your fights didn't destroy the town you were trying to protect. I'd love to see that idea evolve in the next installment.
