I Heart Huckabees director considered for Uncharted - Report

LA Times says David O. Russell could end up helming first film based on Nathan Drake's adventures.

Given how liberally the Uncharted series draws inspiration from blockbuster films like Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Mummy, one might expect the upcoming cinematic adaptation of the PlayStation 3 franchise to be overseen by a director well versed in action and adventure. However, the Uncharted film's producers are thinking a bit outside the box for Nathan Drake's cinematic debut, according to The Los Angeles Times.

"And this is for Sir Ben Kingsley! How dare you put him in Sound of Thunder!"

The paper's "24 Frames" movie blog reported this week that Sony Pictures is moving ahead with plans for an Uncharted film, with producers considering a handful of directors, notably David O. Russell. While the director has won critical acclaim for a number of his films, they have dealt more with awkward people in uncomfortable situations than car chases and explosions.

His 1994 debut Spanking the Monkey was a black comedy about an incestuous relationship, while 2004's I Heart Huckabees was a philosophical comedy featuring an all-star cast portraying people in desperate search of themselves. There was a fair bit of action in Russell's Three Kings, in which a trio of American soldiers look to steal Iraqi gold in the aftermath of the Persian Gulf War, but the film was a far cry from the carefree tone of the Uncharted games. The Times report does stress that discussions on a director are early and producers are not close to making a deal with a specific director yet.

The paper also updates the latest writing pairing behind the film adaptation. Last summer, Hitman scribe Kyle Ward was reportedly tied to the project. However, The Times says Uncharted's movie adaptation is moving forward with a script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. To date, the pair have been behind a one-two punch of big-screen bombs: the treasure hunting action adventure Sahara and the abysmal Ray Bradbury adaptation A Sound of Thunder, both released in 2005.

I've never seen any of those movies. They gotta get Nathan Fillion to play Drake. I just watched Firefly again, he's the closest thing to Drake they'll get.

@lilmp89 Figures, considering how much effort companies like naughty dog and SE put into their games I don't doubt for a second that an Uncharted CGI movie would be amazing. I just hope it will be at the theater.

@toddx77 Definitely! =p My friend has the 1080p rip on his laptop, and it's drooling gorgeous...

I hope this will turn out good and break the bad video game adaptations cycle.

why bother advertising uncharted like a big action flick if you're just gonna make an action flick out of it? stupid i hope this never comes to fruition

Seems like a completely unnecessary cash in. I could understand if it had a ton of originality to it, but the series is basically a mish mash of films that already exist. Why put all that money into a production that is just going to be an inferior product of its inspirations? The only positive note I can take from this is that it has been a while since we've had a true adventure film in the vein of Indiana Jones (everyone knows Crystal Skulls doesn't count), so if done extremely well, this could be the new millineum Indiana Jones. But again, why even bother?

But I've already seen Indiana Jones.

From what I've heard, Uncharted 2 is pretty much a movie anyway... Maybe they should just tape a playthrough and release it in theaters..... I bet it would be better than anything this guy can come up with.

no no NO! Please don't do this! The last we need is another crappy film adaptation of a wonderful game. The best this film can be is a knock off Indy film and the last one sucked. This is just another money grab off the Uncharted franchise. Please let someone from Naughty Dog keep this from happening.

An uncharted movie would be so lame, anyone that's not into gaming and does not know what uncharted is would just see it as a cheap Indiana Jones rip off and not watch it but whereas if they made the movie just for gamers then it would not be a big hit. Its a lose - lose situation either way...

How can you write this article without mentioning or linking to that director's meltdown on the set of "I Heart Huckabees?" This is teh interwebz! If you want to see how David O Russell handles action, check out the video of him angrily knocking things off a desk and screaming at Lilly Tomlin. : ) Or ask George Clooney about the physical fight he had with him on the set of "Three Kings" over the way Russell was treating the film crew. David O Russell does not heart Huckabees

eh, i'd rather have them turn uncharted into The Notebook 2

They should just stick to the story of the games, those are pretty much movies in themselves, take out a little bit of gun fight, and they are legit movies. Now they need to make a real Final Fantasy movie, just played through 8 again, that would be the best movie ever.

Minus one on the Spielberg crack, really? One of you out there LIKED Indy 4... insanity (i know Spielberg directed the first three- but i think a body snatcher got him before he made the fourth ones... or one of those Plagas things from RE4)

They should do the film in CGI like the final fantasy films, using actors that don't look like the in game characters wouldn't work so well. They should also stick to the game story, rather than make up their own rubbish stories like the resident evil films

They mentioned Hitman. That was the worst game realated movie ever, Tomb Rider is the next one, but I have to admit that A.Jollie is far, far away from my ideal of a woman.

ugh, this journalism is set up to make people say "Wow this is going to suck", reading the title inspires grimaces from everybody. Very misleading

Three Kings was awesome and has a lot more in common with Uncharted than the author seems to realize. At the end of the day, there's no good reason for an Uncharted movie. Best case-scenario is a modern times clone of Indiana Jones starring Nathan Fillion. That's pretty cool, but hardly "necessary." The upside is that Uncharted is so popular that a badly made movie won't become a punchline and kill a fledgling franchise like what happened to Bloodrayne. It'll be forgotten and brushed under the rug like the SMB, Tekken, DOA, and Street Fighter movies.

umm....hollywood is retarded. The game is just fine being a....game. How come when something grand is made in the VG world people think it has to be a movie? What next? A Metroid Movie? A Mass Efect Movie? Please God no! The game is already like a movie, and the script and action is fantastic. Now we get people who have nothing to do with the game, or anything to do with what made it great, trying to make it into a big crap fest on the silver screen. Just stop it. If game movies are to be made, they should stay 3d and should be done by the staff and crew of said game. And, whenever they try to do this, they try to give you "Their" vision of what they think would be good. I don't give a damn about your vision of the game, because a bunch of people already had a great vision, and gave me a great product. Bastards.

that was a pretty good movie. but maybe the director should just stick to quirky humor? just my thoughts.

i for one am pumped for an Uncharted move... it has a completely different feeling than Indiana Jones and Tomb Raper the only connection is the treasure hunting...so stop being such fan boys Nathan Fillion would definitely be a good pick for Nathan..i mean they even share the same name.. however another good pick would be Joe Flanigan (colonel shephard in stargate atlantis) both share a similar acting style and character.

So, what? Hollywood can't pretend their crappy video game movies is the result of bad directors anymore, so they get good directors who are way out of their element? I actually kind of liked Sahara, the tone seems right for an Uncharted movie, but as long as the director and acting is good, it shouldn't be too bad. A bad script can be rewritten. Of course, we know no respectful business will give its major competitor more attention. You guys know what happened to the Gears movie, right?
