Hulu Plus comes to Wii U

Video streaming service launches for Nintendo's new high-definition console with GamePad compatibility; requires $8/month subscription.

by

The Wii U may have launched without Nintendo TVii, but it does have Netflix support, and now Hulu Plus as well. The video streaming service has announced through its blog that its Wii U application is now available.

Hulu Plus for Wii U makes use of the system's tablet-like GamePad controller in multiple ways. First, users can use the controller as a second screen that displays supplemental information about shows being watched on the television. Secondly, Wii U owners can view video content on the GamePad itself in the same room or another, provided they stay within range of the Wii U console.

The Wii U's Hulu Plus app also includes the new Hulu Kids tab, which features more than 43 shows aimed at children.

Hulu Plus includes current-season programming from networks like ABC, Comedy Central, NBC, Nickelodeon, and Fox. The service requires an $8 per month (with limited advertising) subscription and is also available through PC, Internet-connected TVs, Blu-ray, players, and other gaming consoles.

Am I the only one that thinks HULU sucks?  I can't find the shows I want to watch.  There are very few episodes and tons of two minute clips... who watches two minute clips?  Useless.

So Hulu can't seem to find the time to create clients for the PlayStation Vita, Windows Phone, or the Surface, but the Wii U gets supported three days after it launches?  Just great.  :-/

...but will it work? That is the big question surrounding all things Wii U at the moment.

If certains apps are not available in Canada I hope they don't show up in our Wii U menu.  If they currently do please Nintendo get a fix for this.

So far there is a few problems with this. When I start it up sometimes all I het is the words HULU PLUS and nothing happens..or at times it says Password and Email but again nothings happens. As long as I can watch on the tablet I am interested but if you have to have the TV on.. eh.

I'm not using any apps on my Wii U right now, the OS is too slow compared to my other machines.

It's nice for those that only have a Wii U though, I just need NIntendo to update the machine and speed things up. It loads too long even turning a game off and waiting to see the OS or just merely looking at the options.

If anything should be universal, it's movie/ TV program subscription services.

I am disappointed that it is for U.S residents only.

I guess they have to do this ti compete with Microsoft/Sony but people dont buy System to watch online tv. We have PCs for that. Nintendo focus more on the games.

@kavadias1981 I bought the Wii U midnight launch in NYC...

Believe me, this thing is ridiculously good.  You can break from your game and use Hulu, Netflix, or Miiverse, without closing your game.

I am able to play Black Ops 2 while using the toilet or in bed.  Miiverse is Facebook + Twitter, combined with the addition of drawing your ideas.

It works...strangely :).

@SolidTy Loading time takes 8 seconds between the main screen and any app you're loading.

But yeah, they already mentioned a patch is in the works to remedy the situation.

@DigitalNoodle That's not what I wanted to hear, especially since Canada gets the app included with the WiiU.  I guess we're stuck with Netflix and their mostly crappy selection.

@Diablo-B That may not be the main reason to buy a system but adding things like netflix and hulu plus will give more of an appeal to people buying the system. The more a system can do the better in my eyes.

BTW : I checked this a few days ago, it's longer than 8 seconds. Way to lie about this. I stop watched 15 seconds just to leave the options menu. @alrepairs

It varies for me from 8 seconds to much longer (and I usually have an audience at the house watching/waiting). It's not consistently 8 seconds, Hell I wish it was. That's still too long though as that adds up. Looking at my options shouldn't take that kind of time, and then leaving the options it loads again. It's very slow OS. Nintendo knows this which is why they are issuing a patch.

Either way it's annoying. Too slow when I have every gaming machine under the sun that has HULU, Netflix, etc.

My Wii U goes on, it's for gaming at this point. Plus, the Gamepad only holds a charge for about 3 hours for me, so I have to make sure I'm good to go.
