HTC Wants Half-Life on Its New Valve-Powered VR Headset

Not long after announcing the new Vive VR headset that uses Valve's SteamVR technology, HTC has said it hopes to see Valve's Half-Life series make it to the system in virtual reality.

In an interview with the BBC, HTC chairwoman Cher Wang was asked about the prospect of Half-Life coming to the Vive. She initially side-stepped the question, talking about how Valve's games include Dota 2, Portal, and Team Fortress. Pressed about Half-Life, she responded, "We are cooperating with Half-Life, and I think... I hope, you know, it will be on it."

That's obviously a very ambiguous way to put it. It's unclear if "cooperating with Half-Life" is some kind of indication that a virtual reality version of a Half-Life game--be it an existing or original one--is in the works. We've followed up with Valve to find out more, but have not yet heard back.

Half-Life has been dormant for more than seven years now, with Half-Life 2: Episode Two having been released in 2007. Fans have been awaiting news of a sequel for years, but with Valve's propensity for taking its time--not to mention the lack of any official indication that a new Half-Life is in development--it's unclear what the franchise's status is.

Valve added support for the Oculus Rift VR headset to Half-Life 2 in 2013. It's possible that this version of the game could come to Vive, but as of yet, there's been no word from Valve on what its plans are.

Expect to hear much more about the Vive this week, as Valve plans to show off the device at the ongoing Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
