How Xbox One Will Reinvent the Living Room

Kinect, open my eyes.

Microsoft's initial campaign for the Xbox One caught a lot of people off guard, and the emphasis on TV and entertainment inspired massive amounts of criticism from the community at large. I was a part of that camp. Console announcements are a big deal, and people want games front and center, not Skype and cable TV integration. After meeting with Microsoft to take a look at the final build of the Xbox One OS, I've had a change of heart. What it failed to communicate in a stage presentation finally made sense, and I was instantly sold. It's not that games aren't important, but they are a given. Granted, we won't see the best games at launch, but what Xbox One owners will get isn't available anywhere else.

Traditionally, gaming consoles have been a distinct device connected to a TV. Yes, modern consoles provide some media and entertainment functionality, but these extended features never lived up to the corporate hype. Where I see the Xbox One as different, and better than these initial attempts, is the execution and breadth of integration with modern entertainment and social habits.

Take Skype, for example. Reaching out to anyone over Xbox Live on the Xbox 360 is a chore, and it's common to reach for your phone to rope logged-off buddies into a multiplayer session. Consider a scenario where all of your gaming friends own an Xbox One. If, like a lot of people able to game at a moment's notice, your friends are watching TV through the Xbox One, you can ping them through the TV for a Skype chat. Better yet, you can send them a game invite and they'll see it overlaid across the bottom of whatever they're watching. Thanks to the Xbox One's snappy multitasking capabilities and Kinect integration, it only takes a second to hop into a video call or into a game, while simultaneously pausing whatever movie or TV show you're watching. When you're finished, simply revert back to what you were doing without having missed a beat.

The snappiness, and quality of video calls, is another point worth considering. During our demo, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi went from watching football to video chatting with a distant co-worker in the blink of an eye. Granted, there was probably an exceptional internet connection piping through this particular facility, but the Kinect's camera captured and transmitted an extremely clear image. It's also efficient, cropping the image to succinctly frame whomever is sitting in the room. If anyone stands up and walks towards the edge of the frame, the cropped portion of the image expands, virtually moving with the person on the other end of the camera.

This, to me, was a prime example of how the power of the Kinect integration can reinvent interaction. It was personal, non-invasive to either party, and as high quality as you'd hope. Better still, when it was a game invite rather than a Skype call, it took seconds to jump in and join a multiplayer session. Both features worked well, and present a strong argument for Microsoft's unique approach to a modern gaming console.

No Caption Provided

This is what got Microsoft into hot water during E3, but I think it will give it the upper hand in the long run. You use your TV for two things, in most cases: watching TV and playing games. Not only does the cable integration work, but it personalizes the experience based on who's in front of the TV. Thanks to Kinect, it's a painless process. It already knows who's commanding the Xbox One once the TV is on, and by that point, your favorite channels and recorded programs are ready and waiting. The Kinect's IR blaster even negates the need for a remote. So it not only simplifies the TV-watching process; it also makes it smarter, and brings it closer to gaming with the live notification features mentioned earlier. Seeing all of these moving parts in action, I quickly realized that Microsoft knows exactly what it's doing.

In the end, it no longer seems to me that Microsoft is disconnected from its core audience. If anything, it's adding value to the gaming experience by integrating gaming into everything one would do when they aren't actively playing. From another perspective, it's also found ways to expand the Xbox One demographic, which might not care about games in the end, but doing so won't harm or hinder the experience for people who do. Of course, the demo I saw took place in a controlled environment. We may find that once millions of people have Xbox Ones in hand, that its "revolutionary" features fail to make an impact. At the end of the day, I'm happy that Microsoft is trying. What's better: it isn't taking baby steps. On day one, the Xbox One will offer not just a new gaming console, but also a new living room experience.

Instead of reinventing the living room, reinvent my gaming experiences with no dumb gimmicks and silly Extra XP points. Give me Games Microsoft. Apps and kinect is the least thing I'm interested in. Can't wait for Forza Motorsport 5.

Can we expect Microsoft to keep their word to support the hardcore gaming market. I just want the company to do more this time around than what they did with the Xbox 360.

It's sad to see Sony fanbabies digging in the bottom of the barrel for insults and complaints. Is that envy I'm seeing? At least you'll have Kill Zone and....Kill Zone.

At first I thought the HBO GO, Amazon Instant, etc. apps were a nice addition to the 360, but now I'm wish all of these apps had never came along because now Microsoft are making "entertainment" consoles instead of gaming consoles.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I never said there was anything wrong with the apps or that they aren't useful, I said video games should be the biggest concern by far on consoles.

I said I wished that had Microsoft never released the apps not because I don't find them useful but because now they're treating them like they're as important as games, and maybe if they hadn't released the apps or at least didn't go as nuts as they did over them they would've bought/produced more exclusive development studios like Sony and thus enhanced their gaming experience.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> My reasoning is that everyone has limitations whether it be time, money, or manpower there's only so much they can do; if they shift a GREAT amount of those things into other areas they naturally won't have as much left over for the others, and typically if you don't have as much resources for something you can't do as much as you may want.

Exclusives was a incredibly small part of my comment and was an example of one way Microsoft could improve their PARTICULAR console. I wish all games were multiplatform and I know the ache you feel once a games out of reach because of your console, I felt once the Xbox 360 was my only console and I'm feeling it again now that I'm getting a PS3 and Sunset Overdrive is a Xbox One exclusive, so if you think I was trying to preach some sort of Sony superiority you're mistaken; I am just voicing my displeasure with the Xbox's shift in focus if it hurts its game quality or not remains to be seen, but the fact that they're so apt to dub it the "entertainment system" and continuously go on and on about how features are JUST AS important as games troubles me (and no that was not my sole reason for switching).

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't get this kind of zero sum thinking, that if they expand functionality in one area it must mean they've taken it away someplace else, like they're incapable of pushing forward in more than one direction at the same time. It's an extremely simplistic view that I don't think matches up to reality.

I also don't get the big deal about exclusives. Who gives a shit if games are available on more than one platform? Does it somehow hinder your enjoyment if someone on a different console gets to enjoy it too? Again this is simplistic zero sum logic. Multi-platform titles means more games for everyone, not less. MS has more exclusives in development for X1 than Sony does for PS4 anyway, yet still people find a reason to bitch. It's completely nuts.

My point is that Microsoft has shifted so much of its focus from the gaming aspect of the Xbox One due to their apps success and this is evident once they themselves have numerously stated that the Xbox One is an entertainment system, their features are just as important as the games, and how "it's not just about games anymore".

Sony does have many similar apps but they treat them as extras to the overall Playstation experience and have specifically stated that Video Games are their primary focus, and it shows through their actions.

They want to integrate TV and games so they can make advertising revenue like TV does. Go from TV ads to game Ads instantly...

The phone companies had video calling back in the 80s and consumers didn't like it. I'm not sure why I would video call when my cell has unlimited minutes, speaker, ect. and can do the same thing. Also, I doubt most homes will have good enough internet to support this.

Also, I don't want my friends bugging me all the time online when I am trying to play single player, do other things, ect. I'm not a person who likes to be "connected" 24/7.

Lastly, I don't need all those TV services because I rarely watch TV! I'm one of those that ditched cable/sat and use an antenna for sports. Can't say I miss it.

Forcing gamers to download and install gigs and gigs of data, which includes all the media associated with the non-gaming elements of the new consoles will create a huge problem for many people that have poor, slow, inconsistent or no internet speeds.

I have no doubt that in the distant future a single box can support everyone's needs but the main issue with adoption is flexibility. I have nearly 20TB of Bluray MKV files on a media server that neither console will ever play or provide support for. I stream all my media to low power consuming media streamers at full 1080p with 7.1 HD audio in every major room of my house from one source computer. Both consoles are very proprietary in what they allow to be streamed or accessed that they can never fully work their way into our living rooms because we will always be forced to look elsewhere to access the media we want and can easily obtain. Microsoft can never possibly re-invent my living room because they are still far behind the curve with what people are doing in their living rooms without them.
