How Xbox One Will Reinvent the Living Room

Kinect, open my eyes.

Microsoft's initial campaign for the Xbox One caught a lot of people off guard, and the emphasis on TV and entertainment inspired massive amounts of criticism from the community at large. I was a part of that camp. Console announcements are a big deal, and people want games front and center, not Skype and cable TV integration. After meeting with Microsoft to take a look at the final build of the Xbox One OS, I've had a change of heart. What it failed to communicate in a stage presentation finally made sense, and I was instantly sold. It's not that games aren't important, but they are a given. Granted, we won't see the best games at launch, but what Xbox One owners will get isn't available anywhere else.

Traditionally, gaming consoles have been a distinct device connected to a TV. Yes, modern consoles provide some media and entertainment functionality, but these extended features never lived up to the corporate hype. Where I see the Xbox One as different, and better than these initial attempts, is the execution and breadth of integration with modern entertainment and social habits.

Take Skype, for example. Reaching out to anyone over Xbox Live on the Xbox 360 is a chore, and it's common to reach for your phone to rope logged-off buddies into a multiplayer session. Consider a scenario where all of your gaming friends own an Xbox One. If, like a lot of people able to game at a moment's notice, your friends are watching TV through the Xbox One, you can ping them through the TV for a Skype chat. Better yet, you can send them a game invite and they'll see it overlaid across the bottom of whatever they're watching. Thanks to the Xbox One's snappy multitasking capabilities and Kinect integration, it only takes a second to hop into a video call or into a game, while simultaneously pausing whatever movie or TV show you're watching. When you're finished, simply revert back to what you were doing without having missed a beat.

The snappiness, and quality of video calls, is another point worth considering. During our demo, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi went from watching football to video chatting with a distant co-worker in the blink of an eye. Granted, there was probably an exceptional internet connection piping through this particular facility, but the Kinect's camera captured and transmitted an extremely clear image. It's also efficient, cropping the image to succinctly frame whomever is sitting in the room. If anyone stands up and walks towards the edge of the frame, the cropped portion of the image expands, virtually moving with the person on the other end of the camera.

This, to me, was a prime example of how the power of the Kinect integration can reinvent interaction. It was personal, non-invasive to either party, and as high quality as you'd hope. Better still, when it was a game invite rather than a Skype call, it took seconds to jump in and join a multiplayer session. Both features worked well, and present a strong argument for Microsoft's unique approach to a modern gaming console.

No Caption Provided

This is what got Microsoft into hot water during E3, but I think it will give it the upper hand in the long run. You use your TV for two things, in most cases: watching TV and playing games. Not only does the cable integration work, but it personalizes the experience based on who's in front of the TV. Thanks to Kinect, it's a painless process. It already knows who's commanding the Xbox One once the TV is on, and by that point, your favorite channels and recorded programs are ready and waiting. The Kinect's IR blaster even negates the need for a remote. So it not only simplifies the TV-watching process; it also makes it smarter, and brings it closer to gaming with the live notification features mentioned earlier. Seeing all of these moving parts in action, I quickly realized that Microsoft knows exactly what it's doing.

In the end, it no longer seems to me that Microsoft is disconnected from its core audience. If anything, it's adding value to the gaming experience by integrating gaming into everything one would do when they aren't actively playing. From another perspective, it's also found ways to expand the Xbox One demographic, which might not care about games in the end, but doing so won't harm or hinder the experience for people who do. Of course, the demo I saw took place in a controlled environment. We may find that once millions of people have Xbox Ones in hand, that its "revolutionary" features fail to make an impact. At the end of the day, I'm happy that Microsoft is trying. What's better: it isn't taking baby steps. On day one, the Xbox One will offer not just a new gaming console, but also a new living room experience.

Personally, I think the features are awesome, they just aren't for me. I don't watch enough "entertainment" to justify it. I'd rather see a movie in a theater, and play a game on my tv/computer screen. I'm sure my wife would love this though, she uses our HTPC all the time. That last part brings me to a final point though. I already built a system that does this. Does it do it better? Who knows. But my wife is used to it, can use it, and it is already paid for.

Before I even write my comment, full disclosure: I have a PS4 preorder. (Previously owned an Xbox 360, and this will be my first playstation.)

Okay, now that is out of the way, I will say, the tech sounds pretty cool. That being said, I still can't get my head around the idea of wanting the camera/microphone constantly monitoring the living room. I get that you can disconnect it now, but that kind of negates everything the article highlights. Yes, I had a Kinect before. I hardly used it. You know what I did with it when not in use? I tucked it away because I didn't like having a camera staring me in the face - not when it's connected to the internet. I understand that Microsoft is making assurances that you're privacy will be respected, and I believe they're sincere about it. The last thing they want is a violation of privacy lawsuit on their hands. That said, NO system is 100% secure. How long before someone decides that it would be cool to hack in and be able to see into millions of living rooms? Even putting every day hackers aside, how long before some government agency (be it foreign or domestic) decides it's in their best interest to have access to a system like that? That's not paranoia, that's facing reality, given what we've recently seen the NSA has been up to. There was an article just the other day (on NPR) about how the NSA had found a way to gain access to information sent through Google servers. They weren't talking voluntary information sharing on Google's part either. They were talking about servers Google had gone to great lengths to keep private, and didn't even realize were being monitored. So it's entirely conceivable that this would (and probably will) occur. Anyone who knows anything about technology knows that nothing you do online is private. When I log online I do so fully aware of that fact, and I'm okay with that. But putting a potentially vulnerable camera/microphone in my living room? That's a step too far for me.

<< LINK REMOVED >> i agree, firstly just to prepare you many people seems to by fanboys on this article with little to no logic, will take this as an attack on their pride (or something). but i agree with you i wouldn't want a camera on 24/7 in my face that will hackable in time. i mean the kinect itself is not really suitable anyway most rooms outside the US don't work as there mostly in bedrooms too small to use the kinect fully.

What the hell are they gonna see. I will be picking my nose, watching tv, and playing video games. Just keep your meth operation in a different room, or just quit with the drugs you paranoid MOFO.

Who said anything about drugs, or anything illegal for that matter? My issue is that the camera would be in my bedroom, where me and my gf sleep. Not that I think it will get hacked, but i am still not comfortable with a camera basically pointed at where we sleep.

i agree its revolutionary but nobody wants this or needs it really, i have a laptop a phone and a tablet that can all skype, i have apps to watch tv on those devices and millions of free videos online. most people have sky/virgin boxes making it pointless to own that xbone for tv channels. for media purposes like lovefilm and netflix i have a pc and my ps3 (which is not paywalled to use). voice commands can easily be applied to most things and its just lazy, kinect games are not popular and the kinect is not what people want. no people from the older generations will want this because to them its a wast of money as they have all the pieces that make the xbone up already, nobody young wants it because its too expensive and not what they want most of all, a games console. im not some hater of it, it a generally good idea but it needed to be out 6-8 years ago when the market needed this but now the market doesn't need it at all.

This is my honest question on the xbone "why do I need the xbone" and the answer i dont, the only thing thats interesting is the games and 90% of them will either be 3rd party on both consoles or be on my pc. the rest of them i dont even want making the decision plainly obvious. get a ps4 and a decent pc.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's all fine and good, but XB1 does it all on ONE device. Some people may like that option and may want this. You don't speak for everything buddy. You don't need it? Good. Millions of other people might need it. You're one person. Not everyone needs a PS4, A Wii U, an iPhone, and iPad, a PC, a Mac, a 3DS or a PSvita either. Nuff said.

@neowarrior121 I'm reminded of all those on this site who immediately announced the iPad a failure upon launch because "it doesn't do anything that my phone can't already do". I'm especially amused by comments like "no people from the older generations will want this" and "nobody young wants it"....perfect examples of one person applying their own opinions to the entire population.

You might be right. I doubt it, but it's possible that NOBODY wants any of these features. Oh, but wait...the writer seems interested in them. And I'm now interested in them. So, apparently there's SOMEBODY who does want this.

You seem like the small-minded folks who dismissed Twitter and the iPad and every other innovation that came along.

Do you have to like anything about the Xbox One? No, it's not worth it to you but as previous posters mentioned, you used absolutes in your comments and that's why there is confusion in what is your opinion and what is actually facts.

Personally I find having a Skype chat on my tv more appealing that one on my smart phone or tablet. More comfortable, don't have to hold or angle the device and everything in one spot is a convenience. Besides games, what features do you prefer in a modern console?

If you don't that's great, go buy a cheaper less versatile system of your choice, but don't speak for the rest of the world. It's obvious that people want the new Xbox, just not you, and that is okay.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I must be nobody. I have a smartphone and a PC and a 360 and a DVR. I can already do most of what the Xbox One offers, but all of those things combined doesn't come close to the convenience of being able to do it all through one device, seamlessly, and without ever having to touch a remote control. And that's all in addition to it being a great gaming console with a great online service that I'm already a Gold member of. This thing represents a pretty huge value in terms of features over and above gaming, while not skimping on the gaming.

I can completely understand if you wouldn't get the same use out of it and are completely satisfied with what you already have, but that only says something about you, not the quality or capability or overall usefulness of this device. Knock off the solipsism, You only speak for you. As for me, I think the One's features and integration kicks ass and I look forward to owning one.

Kinect sold nearly 30 million units which is more than a third of the 360's adoption rate. Many games have sold in the millions even though they grew stale. If your question is why do I need an Xbox One your answer of course should be that you don't. Why do you need a computer, or a TV, or just about any other luxury? You honestly don't. Shoving your opinions, nonfactual statements, and bias down people's throats is just annoying? B
