How Alien Isolation Is Going All In On Authentic Sci-Fi Horror

Find out with this brand new gameplay footage and interview with creative lead Al Hope.

In the above video, I speak to creative lead Al Hope after a two-hour hands-on preview session with Alien Isolation. The Creative Assembly is going all-in on recreating the horror experience of the original Alien film. It is slow, tense, and claustrophobic, interspersed with bouts of heart-pounding terror.

The game's single alien spends its time dynamically hunting you, crawling through air ducts and bursting out of ventilation shafts in unscripted search patterns. You have no weapons that can harm it, so you need to search the nooks and crannies of the damaged space station you're trapped on for crafting components. These can be fashioned into noisemakers, flares, and flash bombs--things that may distract the alien long enough for you to slip past and find somewhere safer to hide.

But these items aren't perfect, and neither is the '70s-style low-fidelity technology that the world of Alien Isolation is steeped in. The Creative Assembly took great care to recreate the look and feel of Alien, from the VHS-like visual artefacts on computer displays, to the way your motion tracker isn't precise and can experience glitches in confined areas--areas you'll be spending a lot of time cowering in. All of this communicates that technology isn't going to help you stop the alien--only your wits can.

Alien Isolation is releasing October 7 for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

looks great but I remember Colonial marines looking great too during E3. After the disaster that was and hearing that sega and gearbox wormed their way out of the lawsuit scot-free, I'm going to have to pass on preordering and wait for the reviews. They've forever lost my trust

Things in the game world shouldn't glow. that's way to many hints

All I must say is this better not be short I am over all these 5 minute to 5-6 hour games costing full price and not even next gen quality. If its a longer game I will not miss on getting this day one.

I predict tears of joy from Alien fans the world over when this game comes out. It seems that everything is falling into place quite well and Creative Assembly is pulling out all the stops to make the game everyone has been wanting for years. That pre-order crap is still quite annoying but that is Sega's doing and shouldn't really impact the game itself.

If you want to experience "authentic horror", just pay the full price of $59.99 and get "Aliens: Colonial Marines".

I'm interested, but I have doubts about this being a full game. You might be able to drag this out for a few hours, but this sort of game can become exhausting unless there are some other game mechanics. I'm optimistic, but not yet fully convinced it will work for an entire game.

I listened to the whole Ambient Mix of this games' soundtrack recently and that's amazing so I hope the gameplay is as good but being honest, watching these videos just makes me think that it's just another roller coaster ride, full of cliche 'scripted' stuff so you can only really play it once.

Oh yeah in the video at about 3:10 those doors like the ones from Monsters Inc that they go through to the kids bedrooms =P

This game, FC4, Destiny, AC:Rogue, AC:Unity, MG5. Gonna be a great holiday season. Start saving that spare change now, folks. Good times on the horizon

Colonial Marines was authentic as well and CA have a credible history of finished products for which they have the most modest publisher known as SEGA.

I am truly excited for this and I really hope they pull this off. It looks like it's horror in all the right ways, and boy oh boy do I love me some horror.

This is an interesting concept for a game. I'm interested to see how they will string this out. How can you run from 1 alien the entire game? How will they keep it fresh? After a few hours won't the alien lose it's scare? how massive is the ship that you won't traverse the same areas twice?

FLEEBS

This game is looking cooler and cooler. I really hope they can pull off a good Alien game. I love the Alien universe, but so many of the games have been utter trash.

It's kinda like outlast but with a popular theme behind it and a singe real threat. Sadly I doubt I will buy this outright unless GTAV comes out sooner than later.

I really hope the AI is as good as they make it sound. This game has a lot of potential to it and I hope it truly is a terrifying experience like in the original movie.

@Jew1 Gearbox still has the lawsuit after them, they posted an article a few weeks ago or so about Gearbox complaining about the lawsuit. I hope they get shut down the bastards.

@unveilingframe Well said. It takes away from the immersion as well. Hopefully there's an option to turn off the glow.

I think they are shooting for 8 hrs or so. But it depends on your gameplay style too. They are trying to hit a sweet spot of not too long so people get bored and don't finish. But with the survival modes coming out that will help. Been thinking it will have medium replay ability too with first play through being slow and sneaky then trying it fast.

@Johny_47 Yeah, games are always claiming to be unscripted but it's usually BS :).  Games like this are usually heavily scripted so it's even less likely, but we'll see.  They do seem to be letting you have more control (like when they explained you can choose which doors to weld shut) and actually perform more actions rather than just responding to contextual prompts.  So maaaaybe they aren't lying about it being unscripted :).

scubasteve465

In Alien there was only one alien, and it traverses through hallways as well as vent shafts. People in demo interviews say they heard it run through the ceiling past them. And have you seen the size of the space station, looks to be pretty huge. And that's why they aren't going for a 10-12 hr. Campaign b/c people will loose interest. But that's a double edge sword, people will complain that they aren't going to buy it if they hear it's only 5-8 hrs long, can't please gamers these days

@themc_7 You also run into other humans that will be threats and I'm sure there will be a violent android or two. Here's an idea with video games in general, take breaks. Put the game down for days or even weeks, then come back to it. Have multiple games you play and rotate through them. Just an idea.

@FLEEBS  Yah, sadly you are right :(  There have been some good ones way back in the day, but anything more recent hasn't been much to write home about.

@raptor1998 @Jew1 agreed. I bought the collectors edition and was disappointed and upset with the game. Inexcusable

themc_7

@CombatIT @themc_7 I don't like having a bunch of games on the go. I like to see how a single player campaign unfolds all in one consecutive stretch. I kind of like to play 1 game exclusively until I'm done with it.

However, I can juggle a few games if they are multiplayer focused.

Johny_47
Johny_47

@themc_7 @lara_antunes It would have been aye, I mean like hell would you move that slow if that Xeno was coming at you when you're unarmed, I'd probably chuck that motion tracker at it and bolt in panic =P

dedoporno

@Forcecaster @PikminWorld Who are this "they" you are referring to? CM was developed by another studio and has nothing to do with Creative Assembly. If you are referring to the publisher Sega, I don't think they have something to do with the quality of the product.

np3trop
np3trop

@Jew1 @raptor1998 This isn't Gearbox though. It's Creative Assembly. That scam wasn't Sega's fault. CA have a pretty clean history so no reason to think this will happen again. No doubt CA are aware of people's concerns, so if anything, they'll go the extra mile to make sure the demos accurately represent the final product. They'd be silly to repeat Gearbox's mistake.

PikminWorld
PikminWorld

@dedoporno @Forcecaster @PikminWorld No, I just meant the developer of the game, nothing really to do with CM. Any game has a possibility of not living up to expectations and that's what I'm a bit worried about. This game is all about how that alien's AI functions and the developers make it sound very intelligent as I hope it is. Games today still don't have perfect AI yet, so this could turn out somewhat disappointing. The alien could do stupid/cheap things but, that last bit at the end looked good. If it works out well, it should be a great game.
