New details were released on the movie based on Sega's House of the Dead games today. Principal photography began on the film in Vancouver, Canada, under the direction of Uwe Boll. House of the Dead will mark a unique entry in the German director's filmography. Boll's work has included the films Sanctimony, a tale about a bored stock trader who becomes a serial killer, and Homeroom: The Heart of America.

The movie's story, written by David Parker and Mark A. Altman, will focus on a group of college students who head out to a mysterious island for a rave. Once there, they must confront an assortment of zombies and other flesh-eating creatures eager for some new meat. The cast will include Jonathan Cherry, star of New Line Cinema's Final Destination II; Tyron Leitso, who will appear in Hallmark's Dinotopia miniseries; and Will Sanderson of television's Wolf Lake. The film's female cast will include Sonya Salomma and Enuka Okuma and newcomer Ona Grauer as Alicia, the film's lead character. The cast is rounded out by veteran Hollywood actors Clint Howard of Apollo 13, Ellie Cornell of Halloween IV andHalloween V, and acclaimed actor Jurgen Prochnow of Das Boot and Air Force One fame.

The movie will be produced by Shawn Williamson under the Brightlight Pictures banner and executive produced by Mindfire Entertainment, which has produced the award winning Free Enterprise and The Specials, and Daniel Kletzky, a producer on Resident Evil and Final Fantasy.

House of the Dead is currently slated to hit theaters in spring 2003. The latest installment in the game series, House of the Dead 3, is set for release this fall exclusively for Microsoft's Xbox.
