Hothead handling Hitchhiker's Guide game

DeathSpank shop announces development of title based on author Douglas Adams' sci-fi classic; no information on release date or platforms.

by

Hothead Games' latest titles--DeathSpank and its sequel--were released on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network to a warm reception last year. The studio's next announced project, however, is taking players on a comedic journey to outer space.

Hothead takes on the galaxy with its newest game.

Hothead Games today announced development of a game based on late author Douglas Adams' classic sci-fi comedy novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Unfortunately, no information was provided concerning price, release date, or platforms. Gamers interested in the title can check out a newly launched website titled The New Hitchhiker's Guide and follow its development.

Besides several mobile titles, Hothead's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy game will be the first based on the novel since the eponymous text-based adventure from the mid-1980s. From 1984 to 1986, the title was released on a variety of platforms, including the PC, Apple II, Macintosh, and Commodore 64.

For more on Hothead's latest development efforts, check out GameSpot's review of DeathSpank and coverage of its sequel, DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue.

Is there any tea with this...? "Here's me, the brain the size of a planet..." Just thought I would join in with HHG2G comments. Its Mostly Harmless! Now I am off, before some Vogon's come and try to read me some of their poetry!!!

And they released this info on Towel Day too!

If they get this right it could be awesome. Very tough to do so though, the books were brilliant, to replicate even 50% of that brilliance will be an achievement.

Loved the book, loved the text-based game, found the movie to be passable, but will I like a modern gaming interpretation of the story? They better make it well!

Awesome! It could be MENTAL. I hope it's as good as the movie. That'd be enough for me :D

I don't think it would be possible to do the quirkiness of the books complete justice. That being said, the movie was funny and witty, and if they can match or beat that, I will be pleased as punch. ... maybe they will include an interactive conversation with supper at the restaurant at the end of the universe...

"Ah... It'll only end in tears..." Good to see HG2G back... I don't know what about all this hatred towards the movie. It was a entertaining movie after all. Sam Rockwell did a fine job as Zaphod. I read all the series and I still like the movie...

Not holding my breath. A quirky book like this needs a quirky adventure developer with a great sense of humor. I think I hear someone calling Tim Schafer. That would be me calling you. @Skargamer If you like the... epic mess that the movie was, do yourself a favor and read the books. Each one of them outdoes the movie 100 fold. @CapmJim That series was Tim Schafer's baby. I agree. Adventure, humor... win.

I love the books. I hope this game will be able to catch the essence of them

I REALLY liked the movie but a game based over it? How the heck is this supposed to translate?

"You exit to the east. (We were lying about the exit to the south.)" Douglas Adams was a surprisingly evil person when it came to writing text adventures. Kudos to GameSpot for having a picture of the game's cover!

coding a fully functional Infinite Improbability Drive is going to be a tough task... let along building a Deep Thought. I liked the visual design of the movie, but the comedy was crap compared to that low budget TV series. So asthetics of movie + comedic timing of the series = win.

Damn great book. My absolute favorite, in fact. But I'm not ever buying this game.

Amazing book, at least the first 2, the third book confused the hell out of me in highschool, maybe i should give that one a go again. I also though the movie was a fun movie and had the spirit of the book, even though it was a bit different. Hopefully they dont mess this up because it could be REALLY good. i also dont know about this but after playing Tales of Monkey Island i think a Hitchhikers game made by Tell Tale in the style of Monkey Island would be cool.

There is a better chance for me to be able to "get" the knack of flying than these guys have for making a good Hitchhiker's game.

This is a very hoopy announcement indeed! I was the only one at school today with my towel ready. Guess I'll get my Ol' Janx Spirit ready and sit in my basement contemplating the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

Please god no. After that abysmal movie based off the books, I can only imagine how infinitely terrible this game will be. It's honestly a shame to the name.

Absolutely need to produce this one on most platforms, PC as a minimum. The series based on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy is now many decades old, and the fans for it span just as many age ranges. Most of the older gamers in that group use PCs to game instead of consoles, and you'd be alienating them (pardon the pun) if PC wasn't included. They'll also need to do a very good job with this, as the exposure from picking up such a loved series and porting it to a game would break people's hearts if it turned out to be trash. Here's hoping they do a stellar job!

Please let there be a 42 reference in there!
