Homeland star to replace Paul Walker as lead in new Hitman movie

Rupert Friend will take over for late actor in upcoming film based on Square Enix franchise.

by

Homeland star Rupert Friend will replace the late Paul Walker as the lead in Fox's new Hitman movie Agent 47, Hollywood news site Variety reports today.

The publication reports that Walker's commitment to project was a major factor in getting it greenlit, and after he died in a car crash last year, it became unclear if the film would begin shooting in February as planned.

Commercials director Aleksander Bach will direct Agent 47 from a script written by A Good Day to Die Hard writer Skip Woods and Michael Finch. The movie is a sequel to 2007's Hitman, which starred Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47.

The most recent Hitman game was 2012's Hitman: Absolution.

There are multiple new Hitman games in development, including a new AAA project from series creator IO Interactive, as well as mobile games from Square Enix Montreal.

I didn't even know Walker was cast to play 47. I could've seen that working well, but I think Friend is a good call given the circumstances. Can't say I'm filled with confidence with regards the other names attached to the project.

I think Rupert Friend is a good actor, but he looks too Friend-ly to play Agent 47. I haven't seen the Hitman movie with Timothy Olyphant, but it seems entertaining enough.

yeah, this movie is guaranteed to suck, HARD. As a huge Hitman fan I was disappointed to say the least with the first one. Now we got a horrible game as well last year. The franchise is going down the drain. Fucking publishers and Hollywood are ruining it.

Rupert Friend is a good actor though and he is kinda villainous looking, like 47 should be, not some fucking pretty boy like Olyphant and Walker. He could actually pull off a decent 47.

The reason the first movie sucked was because it was a typical Hollywood action-fest. A Hitman movie should be dark, brooding and have some weight to it, it should be character driven, not about cool action stunts. Their first mistake was turning 47 from a near superhuman CLONE to a fucking orphan. I mean come on, the fact that 47 is a genetically engineered near super-human clone, bred with the sole purpose of assassination and raised in a fucking lab is at the core of what Hitman is.

Hitman has the potential to be a great movie, IF it gets the proper director and writers, people who UNDERSTAND the game, what it's about and who 47 is. Unfortunately nobody in Hollywood really cares about games enough and certainly not about this game. All they want to make is money.

I actually thought the movie didn't suck.....LOL. Come at me bro. Why not just bring back Tim Oly? I thought he did a admirable job of it. I guess they just want to bring in a bigger name guy to sell tickets.

Why are they even making another hitman movie? 1st one sucked hard

I just hope they don't make a movie like the first one. It didn't feel like something out of the Hitman franchise to me. More like a generic action movie.

The reason i think Video game based movies should be done in CGI is because every new movie its often different actor playing the same person. Personally it doesnt feel the same, Same with Terminator for example, looks like the machine is aging, especially it will show if Arnie is back in the new one.

This guy doesnt have "assassin" face so to speak

Aaron Paul should get the role. The movie isn't gonna be good anyway but at least we'll get to laugh.

Never seen Homeland but I liked Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47....

the Hitman film was actually pretty good, i think they got the core of who and what 47 is....

he's smart genius level IQ, good memory and attention to detail, he's an expert in all forms of martial arts, all types of weapons, an expert infiltrator and is a master of disguise.....and the film captured all that yet people still hated it....

IDK, I don't think who played Agent 47 was the issue, I just think it was people again expected 100% Hitman the game as a film and that wouldn't work.....the only criticism I have against the first film was it only took place in russia where most of the Hitman games go all over the world.....meh I'll still give the new one a chance though.....

I hope this movie isn't as awful as the last one, but it probably will be...

I still haven't even watched the first Hitman movie. Davd Bateson should be given the role to play on the big screen. He has the looks, voice, charisma.... hmmm, why is that? Well.... they modeled Agent 47 after him! I'm sure he has the mobility and agility to perform the role.  I didn't even know a sequel was being filmed.  Shows how much I care about video game movies these days, and I had high hopes for the first Silent Hill film, and after seeing that they know absolutely nothing about the lore of SH 1-4, that just made me forget about video game films, and following them.

Gary_Stanton
Gary_Stanton

Is David Bateson THAT fucking hard to get to play 47 in live action? He looks/sounds like him, hell, they modeled 47 after him the same way Snake was modeled after David Hayter in Metal Gear Solid back in 1998.

Oh wow now this is a thing. Can we skip to the point in time when making movies out of video games isn't a fad anymore?

I think Jason Statham would fit the role as well. This was a missed opportunity.

Just hearing that Skip Woods is writing the screenplay for another Hitman film is enough to make me cringe.

@quidditch3 I think they were getting Fast and the Furious back on track, the last couple were good (except for the rock always throwing people across a room)

I hope they never make another Fast and Furious Movie. I won't watch it, because last time they tried with out Paul Walker, it sucked.

@Hurvl Have you seen the Boy in the striped pajamas or Homeland? He's a total badass and he can be very mean.

well put...couldnt have said it better myself. The first one was so upsetting. Ninja swords? What happened to stealth and precision marksmanship. I dont remember Agent 47 doing kung fu in any of the games. Hollywood sucks.

"...proper director and writers, people who UNDERSTAND the game, what it's about and who 47 is."

We probably have to face the fact that there aren't people like that in Hollywood, and that we're never going to get the movie we want. Hell, after the last game I'm wondering if we'll get the game we want.

@berserker66666 Because the first one was profitable and Vin Diesel, the guy who produced the first one and probably is a producer on this one, loves video games.

@Gary_Stanton I thought that he had tried for the part for the 1st one and never got called back… or maybe I'm confusing that with what had originally happened with Absolution.

KenshinXSlayer
KenshinXSlayer

@Gary_Stanton I agree. Hell, I almost refused to purchase Absolution, because they didn't offer David Bateson the role of his character, at first. I'm a guy, but he has the looks to play his role on the big screen.  He even has that "voice".

hystavito

@gamingnerd121 I disagree completely :).  Hitman is a tough one, he's generally supposed to be calm, cold, calculated, I just don't see Statham as a good fit at all.  In fact I think most of the typical big action movie types are wrong for Hitman.

noladem504

@themc_7@Hurvlyeah he kicks some serious ass in homeland. I think he will be more believable as Agent 47 than Paul Walker wouldve.

@MonocleOwl @resorber Times are changing. No one in Hollywood played any type of game10 years ago. More and more people our, and the generations that grew up with consoles in there homes are starting to get older, and move into the positions that would influence a product. Give it another 10-20 years and gamers will be everywhere. Hell maybe we will even have a gamer in governments.

@Trevorbangbang@cdragon_88Perfect? Not buy a long shot. He didn't even care about the franchise or the character. The only reason he made it was to pay for his new house because Deadwood got cancelled. You really want someone like that to play 47?
