Hideo Kojima depressed by GTAV

Iconic designer says he doesn't think Metal Gear Solid V can "reach that level," compared to Rockstar's open-world game.

Industry veteran Hideo Kojima has spoken out on Twitter to say he is "depressed" by Grand Theft Auto V, because he does not believe Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain can match it.

In a pair of tweets, he praised Rockstar Games, saying its upcoming open-world action game will raise the bar for developers the world over.

Like GTAV, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is an open-world game. Kojima's latest is in development for current- and next-generation consoles, while Rockstar's game is coming only to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I'm sure it'll still be a good game for fans of the MGS series, but I got VERY tired of Japanese gaming after sons of liberty, I don't like the stories, voice acting or music choices.
sorry, just the way it is for me.
however, I have great confidence for the GTAV soundtrack :) and the rest of the game of course!!!

Kojima knows well that GTA and MGS are two different animals, and as so they don't really compete with each other, he knows as we do MGS is king in storytelling and tactical gaming, i believe he just wants to be humble at the fact his new game takes an open world for the first time as to avoid comparisons but being sure his game will impress.

Personally if i have to chose between GTA and Metal Gear i would ALWAYS choose MG, no doubt about it.

.....not to mention that when i play MG i expect an experience completely different from GTA games......

i gotta say , MG phantom pain looks a bit better than gta v , but gta v will be more exiting to play and explore ...

No one is asking it to be GTAV. If I wanted GTA5 thats what I'd get. I want it to be Metal Gear and  by that standard MGS5 looks kickass

Well I won't be getting GTAV cause getting a new system to bad they didn't release it for the next gen. but MGSV looks epic.

To all skeptics out there. Hideo Kojima taking his hats off to GTA V means something. I can feel it. We've never had this like never before. An epic turnaround in the industry will take place on September 17. Console owners you are first ones to partake. We PC gamers are counting on you to give us an honest and unbiased feedback. We trust you to feed us game information. Well, mechanically and technically. Not story-wise if you know what we mean. Just no spoilers. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you.

Kojima always shows humility.  Humble to a fault.  You find this in many Japanese developers.

For my part, I would much rather have a copy of MGS5 than GTA5, no matter what Kojima says.

The Guy Sent 2 tweets he was just praising a game i doubt he meant it so seriously just a guy giving a compliment they might even work together on a game one day thats what we need MORE FRIENDS LESS COMPETITION AMONG COMPANIES

Kojima seems to be obsessed about open world games, and GTA series master it. They're two different kind of monsters. GTA is about graphic action and freedom to explore an entire city and do a lot of (many times illegal) things. MGS is a story driven game, with a rich mithology, and a tactical game, where you need to think your actions and atacks, use stealth action extensively, find out your enemies weaknesses, etc. If had enough money to put only on one game, I would choose MGS V for sure.

Whatever. Now, if he suddenly started pining after the call of doodie series I would lose my shit.

First he says games aren't art (his games?!), just a form of entertaining and then this? It makes me feel bad how he looks down on himself, but I may be overreacting.

I think he's awesome along with his games  and I hope he truly appreciates what he does. Also, MG games wouldn't be what they are if Kojima wouldn't be like he is, so it's kind of wierd. Im ok as long as he keeps on, trying to get better and is not truly depressed. :P

Don't be sad Koj. They're different types of games, it's like comparing apples and oranges, they're different but they're both good.

I think this is poor marketing on Kojima's part. Good on him to big up GTAV but he didn't have to put down his own in the process.

The GTA series is impressive, and has been through the years.  But MGS has been my favorite series since MGS1.  It's no contest for me, bring on Big Boss!

GTAV will likely have amazing game play while MGSV will have a amazing story.

Both games are great, no need to game-war here. I'll buy both, first GTA5 for PS3 then MGS5 for next gen. I like both but my favorite would be MGS5. Will still play both until my thumbs bleed :).

GTA is nothing compared to MGS series. GTA is a trashy game series with goofy retarded characters. Be it how open-world ever, it doesn't up the quality all that much in my books. Just do your thing Kojima and DO NOT get depressed or quit halfway. Also, DO NOT START COPYING GTA5. I love what I've seen from MGS5 so far. I only saw the gameplay trailer of GTA5 and it WAS good but MGS is way better.

Here's a good way to get over that depression, give us a damn release date already

If I were Rockstar I would call that no higher praise since Kojima is one of the best game creators to come around especially for the story and they likely know that source of pride for them and give respect to man who loves games enough to tell his competition if they could out preform him then bravo

Let the gamer do anything he wants and approach the situation how he wants which your doing let us fight in helicopters and pilot and customize our own metal gears and have them dropped off by helicopters or call in air strikes as distraction to sneak through alternate routes theirs so much you can think of Kojima break all your chains and let the gamer do what he wants in his head and how he wants to do it.

there are always shattered lines, glitches, slight problems that producers can easily identify in their creations (whether game/music/movie industry) since they paint the picture, but those lines are almost invisible to users since the definition of perfection in user's mind is always @least a couple steps behind the creator's definition of perfection.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                in brief : he picked on matters in his game in which i believe me as a user wouldn't even notice.

Someone tell Kojima that he shouldn't be depressed, as he makes amazing games. As much as GTA kicks ass, I'm looking forward more to MGS V than GTA V.

Imagine if Rockstar and Kojima collaborate and allow a DLC Big Boss in GTAV?

Too intense bro.

Althoug GTA always been a open world game, it's been overall (as always) crapy compared to MGS series! I don't believe that this time around they would try to out rank MGS V. That's shitty propaganda 4 sure - pure marketing using reverse psycology!

I can't believe people are still complaining about GTA. Didn't you see the gameplay trailer or read the Game Informer article? They ditched everything the GTA IV pessimists didn't like and brought back almost everything from San Andreas, which is the game that made everyone love them. AND YOU STILL COMPLAIN.

@canoninja Plus he knew if he went on to say what he did about GTA that it would give him even more publicity for his game, not that i'm saying he needs it but he could be reaching out the GTA crowd, hoping they might give his game ago as it is also open world now. ;-)

beardface21

@lonleyknight7 No I think both games will be about the same in terms of excitement and exploring.  In MGSV you have a freaking army at your disposal so the carnage will be good.
