Heroes of Newerth now free-to-play

S2 Games' online action-RPG rolls out three new account tiers; existing members given free access to all heroes, verified matches.

The free-to-play phenomenon continues growing, as yet another online game has switched over to the increasingly popular business model. S2 Games today converted its multiplayer action role-playing game Heroes of Newerth to a free-to-play game.

Not everything in Newerth seems especially heroic.

As a result of the change in business model, Heroes of Newerth will henceforth feature three different types of user accounts. Those who played the game prior to its free-to-play conversion have Legacy accounts, the benefits of which include free access to all of the game's heroes and "Verified Only" games that separate the Newerth veterans from the rookies. New enlistees will receive Basic accounts that will be upgraded to Verified accounts when they have either purchased the game's virtual currency, Goblin Coins, or surpassed a playtime threshold.

Taking cues from the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients, Heroes of Newerth lets players control a single hero in real-time-strategy-like skirmishes against other players and their computer-controlled minions. The game won the Audience Award at the 2010 Independent Games Festival and was nominated in the Technical Excellence category.

Each game that goes this route can be considered another casualty of the war on greed. It doesn't benefit the players, only the stock holders.

free but limited hero so waste of time

@another_drew Invalid arguments, HoN was also made people who made dota, at one time they partnered with Icefrog before relationships went cold. Also saying HoN is a cheep knockoff is plain wrong considering that the team from S2 created a ton of new heroes of their own, changed a lot of heroes that where ported from Dota, and added new items. HoN has evolved past the point of being a mere "dota clone". As for LoL being free to play, yes it is, however the heroes cost points to unlock, which forces you to either grind them or buy them. Skins can't be bought with points you earn in game, you need to buy them, often times skins also feel like cheep ripoffs since they are the same old model with the same old sounds and just new textures. At least in HoN a new skin includes new model, textures and sounds, the skins without all those features are also way cheeper. The best part of HoN skins is that, you CAN buy them with in game currency, you don't need to fork out the money, which LoL forces you to do. Seriously I know people who have spent more money on LoL then on HoN, yeah nice "free to play" policy. I'm not sure why you fanatics keep defending LoL when it has so many faults, but at least if you're gonna try, come up with some compelling arguments.

Hey guys there's this great game out there called League of Legends that was actually made by the guys who created DOTA. Seriously its not just a cheap knock off like some games. Ya, its free to play and everything. NO CHARGE WHATSOEVER. so yaaa...ummmm.... go play it..........

Went from HoN on sale for 10 dollars to free in less then 2 weeks if that isn't a sign of the end coming what is? Big fail for S2 Have fine as your server downtimes as it becomes overloaded with newbs, trolls and haters. Dota 2 will bury H o N.

@Dezuria that's kinda the idea, it's DOTA style

I'll be trying it again now that it's f2p, but it sounds that the game has removed signifigant features from before when it wasn't free. Apparently that's made a ot of people just abandon it.

Dezuria
Dezuria

I tried it out, but it just feels like an RTS without the building or unit control.

I haven't heard a thing about this game but I'm a little disappointed with the ftp trend. It sounds appealing but it's just another example of companies being greedy and trying to milk more profit out of a nearly dead product. If it truly was ftp I'd be a fan but micro transactions are the worst thing to happen to gaming since the virtual boy.

this shows how successful LoL has been all in all, LoL is definitely a more progressive version of DotA, it features so many new features and isn't just a clone HoN is too much of the same, some heroes are exact copies from heroes in DotA if anyone here hasn't tried LoL yet for any reason i strongly advise you to do so, you'll get hooked

@-Shooter- There is a huge chance DOTA 2 will be free to play. Valve recently made TF2 a micro-transaction based game, which is something they started working towards a year ago. Since they are working on DOTA 2, there is a high chance that all their work up until now has been in preparation for a F2P Dota 2

I tried the trial back before it become f2p, and to be honest it wasn't that stunning -means I wouldn't pay for such a game-. Anyway, I prefer to purchase a game rather than play it for free, I don't like the pay2play thing either, it's just too costy for me.

Not a fan of f2p, I actually prefer paid subscription models that have no microtransactions.

I agree 100% @MrHatnClogs: between nigh-AAA F2P games like this, Vindictus, and, TF2 (even though i bought that one so i personally don't benefit aside from the 2 weeks of easy noob kills) My wallet has the summer off. Hell, I won't need to pay for gaming until well into OCTOBER!!

I'm glad F2p is trending now, instead of the casual games.

@blakeney WoW free trial doesn't allow yo u to interact with almost anyone or group with them, and you only get to see less then 5% of the total game's content, yeah very nice "free to play". On topic. This is an interesting decision by S2, I hope it works out well for them and the game grows more and blossoms. I have played HoN and LoL, but LoL is too easy from multiple points of view to be taken seriously. You free spells that act as get out of jail cards, you don't lose gold when you die, stuns and disables are too easy to avoid you get a free teleport back to base. What LoL has in its favor is more originality since they built their heroes and items from scratch. LoL looks horrible graphics wise, I know they wanted to go cartoony, but it just makes your eyes bleed. http://www.ageofempiresonline.com/media has cartoony graphics and looks good. HoN has better gameplay, denies on creeps and towers, jukes, more compelling disables, more valuable gold, more dinamics in general. The graphics looks better, while they did start of by copying a lot of heroes and items from Dota, they have gone ahead leaps and bounds since then and have introduced new items and heroes of their own that really set the game apart. The best part though is the skins, in LoL you have to pay for them with real money, and 90% of the time they only include a new texture. In HoN you can buy them with coins you gain by playing and they include a new model, new textures and new sounds.

F2P is always good, I just feel kind of sorry for those who bought it...or do they get a lot of the premium content right away? Because I started playing Team Fortress 2 now that it's free, and I've been seeing a few ads popping up. Is it like that for people who bought it full price?

I'm just waiting for the "WoW is F2P now!" news, it's bound to happen.

Out of dota, LoL, and HoN, HoN is the weakest link imo. League of legends already dominates the free sect of the market for that genre.

Too little too late. League of Legends has far too much of a lead on HoN to be threatened by this.

Not wasting my time with that. Animation looks good though. I'd rather finish playing Torchlight.
