Here's What Was Shown During The 20 Minutes Of Footage For TMNT: Mutant Mayhem

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is hitting theaters on August 2--unless you were quick enough to grab some sneak peek tickets--but at this year's Comic-Con, fans who attended the panel got a good helping of the movie. Over 20 minutes of the film were shown, giving the attendees a good idea of how this movie will differentiate itself from the previous incarnations.

So for those who want to avoid any sort of spoilers, look away now as we're going to dive into the footage from Comic-Con.

Okay! It's pizza time!

We open with the Turtles talking about how they have to avoid humans while shopping along with the celebrities they would want to meet. However, we see it's not exactly shopping as it is stealing their food. It makes sense, as they don't really have any money. There's a quick Mission: Impossible gag where Raph comes down from the ceiling on a wire. Leo cuts his way into a truck to take a case of Doritos. After getting their snacks, they debate on going and exploring the city, instead of coming home like Splinter wanted.

So their first stop is a movie screening in the park where Ferris Bueller's Day Off is playing. They are convinced that the way Ferris lives his day is how high school actually works. They're desperate for humans to like them and are clearly super lonely, wishing for their own sort of community. They end up going home, feeling defeated and downtrodden, where Splinter is waiting, wondering where they've been.

Splinter reminds them that humans are "disgusting monsters" that "are going to milk us for our blood." We then get their origin story with Splinter as a young rat in NYC. He talked about how he hated the city and how humans were mean to rats, thus Splinter's feelings about humans. Then the ooze happened and Splinter found the baby turtles in the ooze and saved them.

"You were the first things I met that didn't want to kill me or eat me," he tells them. Then we get a montage of Splinter raising the Turtles. Cooking, bathing them, putting them to sleep... all the things a father would do.

Splinter admits that after they had all mutated, one day he attempted to take the Turtles out to see NYC and humans and he explained how it did not go well for any of them. "That day I promised to never let you get hurt ever again." This is why he taught them martial arts based on movies and instructional tapes he found, so they could defend themselves.

Cut to some bad guys pulling off a heist with the cops chasing them. The would-be robbers work for Superfly (Ice Cube), the movie's main villain. Superfly, who is a mutated fly, swoops in and picks up their escape truck, flying away with it. He takes them to his place, located on TCRI property, and it's filled with mutants.

We switch back to the Turtles using their weapons to cut up fruit on the roof of a building, filming it. They then do it with ninja stars, which is in one of the trailers. The ninja star ends up stuck in April's helmet, thus introducing them to her. Leo has an immediate crush, but April is positively pissed at the boys wrecking her stuff.

The boys hassle Leo for wanting to go talk to her. April is yelling at them about safety, not realizing someone is stealing her motorscooter. That's when the Turtles decide they have to help her get it back, and of course, because Leo needs to impress her. The Turtles have never been in an actual fight before so when they catch up to the bad guys at their chop shop, it does not go according to plan. First, Donnie winds up getting stabbed in the leg by Raph's sai. Then the gang of thugs and the Turtles fight it out. You could hear Vanilla Ice's "Ninja Rap" playing in a car stereo while they fight.

Somehow, the turtles win the fight and nobody is more thrilled or surprised than they are. April comes to get her scooter back and finds all the bad guys beaten up. The Turtles are hiding from her but she finds them. When she sees them initially, she assumes they are in costumes, but when she realizes what they are, she freaks out.

"Can we explain this over pizza?" Michelangelo asks, which April agrees to.

It was a productive bit of footage that gives you an idea of where the Turtles are in their training, how they relate to the rest of the world, and establishing their rogues gallery pretty much upfront. There was another scene of footage where we see that Superfly is actually Baxter Stockman's (Giancarlo Esposito) son and Stockman was the one who poured the ooze down the sewer, causing the mutation of Splinter and the Turtles.
