Head of Xbox: Microsoft wants to build products that change the world

Phil Spencer says that's why he has stayed at Microsoft for 26 years.

In a new video interview, new Head of Xbox Phil Spencer explains that the reason he has stayed at Microsoft for so long--26 years!--is because the company wants to build products that change the world. Because Microsoft has the resources and the ambition to make this happen, he says he wouldn't want to work anywhere else.

"Fundamentally, [Microsoft] is a company that wants to do things that change the world. And they have the resources and the ambition to do that," Spencer told Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb in a new video interview. "Whether it's with Xbox or any of the products that we build."

Spencer said he has met with new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and the pair have discussed what Xbox means to the future of Microsoft as a company. For Xbox One specifically, Nadella and Spencer unsurprisingly agree that they want to deliver a top-tier product to consumers.

"We have the ambition to build the best gaming console for fans," Spencer said. "The gaming console plays the best games, has the best entertainment...and to be in a company that has the resource, the ambition, and the drive to make that happen, it's incredibly motivating for someone like me."

Spencer joined Microsoft directly out of college and has worked there ever since.

This is not the first time Spencer has spoken enthusiastically about the potential for gaming to help grow Microsoft overall. Last week, he said that "gaming can be a real catalyst for Microsoft's re-emergence as a consumer company," going as far to say that gaming can be for Microsoft what music was for iPod company Apple.

You can hire the guy, so he can write for himself twice a day !!!, while you editors can spend your time on sth more useful.

I have owned all versions of the xbox, and have to say so far I'm not overly impressed with the XBOX One. The apps are subpar. Meaning if you put out a next generation system why would you not at least launch with all the apps from the last generation. The games I have played so far have been fairly shallow in content.

...All he really needs to do is make my XBOX ONE play Lego The Hobbit in 1080p without being so choppy.

still.. xbox one (with all the gimmicks) and spending god knows what on producing Titanfall etc just to get rid of your kinect technology from the past decade+ to get your marketing ploy to make your customers see they need to take on kinect....I don't know....I can't help thinking of what quality games could have been produced...but what do I know?!?

Every.Single.Day. it's a new article where somebody working for or affiliated with M$ has a meaningless quote on Gamespot.

I just had an epiphany about the key difference between PS supporters and Xbox supporters. PSS says, "we love Sony because it does what we want it to do." XBS says, "you Sony fanboys make me sick," then turns to MS and says, "you make me sick too. Stop with your Kinect gimmick and start making games for gamers again!" Just my take from what I've read.

So did Skynet. Wait, the Cloud is on the internet.......Something sounds fishy here.

I greatly respect this aspiration. On the other hand, chances are good that I will not approve the way MS wants to change the world, so I reserve the right to criticize harshly future policies, vote with my wallet and encourage others to do the same. Sounds like all talk, doesn't it? And not much at that coming from one anonymous commentor. Yet a collection of these made MS reverse several of its world-changing policies and gave PS4 at least an early lead in sales.

I am sorry. Of course those changes were for Xbox supporters and not other critics. I wonder why they are not more supportive of MS's vision. Surely they support MS because their goals are aligned, not out of some faded notion of brand loyalty.

Change the world = release Halo on PC... you know that "other" console they already have the dominant operating system for.

Instead of changing the world , how about making a " game " console for " gamers " . Not a console for watching TV.

Phil is a cool guy, he actually plays and likes games, he is not like other corporate chiefs who doesn't give a f*ck about games.

He is doing pretty well so far, Xbox is in good hands =)

I don't want you to change the world, I want you to make a decant console that treats the consumer like an actual person and not a bag full of money.

@hunter0011 I've been a long time supporter of the Xbox brand, having absolutely loved both the original and the 360, but I find nothing appealing about the Xbox One. It's clear from the last two years of the 360 coupled with the current underwhelming line up and nearly blank release schedule, that Microsoft abandoned gaming. That's okay if it's where they want to take their business, but for me I'm not interested in apps, yelling at my TV or Halo themed shows.

@sakaixx  That's why MS is one of the biggest tech giants. Your comment doesn't make sense.

The majority of Xbox users that don't like the Kinect are disgruntled because of the inconsistent recognition. That can be anything from simply not recognizing the player to movements and selections, which hopefully they will work out in the future. But once they get it all straightened out yes it will be a truly revolutionary piece of hardware.

@HAWKLANDER  I've been a gamer since the first prince of persia in pc back in 1990...and I absolutely love the Xbox One, actually I'm having a blast with KI,DR3, Forza V, Garden Warfare , Titanfall, BF4, FIFA, and AC Blackflag.

The Xbox One is by far the best gaming console I've had.... maybe you should get one and see how good it is.

Because by Sony pony standards they are HP or dell operating systems not Microsoft. That's how stupid they are. I had 3 Sony idiots saying Titanfall wasn't exclusive to Microsoft because they can play on their Sony and HP PC's. Yea I know, retards.

Unfallen_Satan

@hunter0011 I may have read the wrong opinions then. I thought the majority of Xbox users want MS to abandon Kinect and focus on a more traditional console. Are you saying they are actually pressing Xbox to fix the Kinect's technical issues? Or do you hope that once it is fixed, the majority will embrace it?

However, whether or not the majority embraces it, I agree it's a nice piece of tech. I am, however, still waiting for a game that really shows its gaming potential. Kinect Sports seems like it stumbled while other games use it in a secondary manner. It's a pity.

Unfallen_Satan
Unfallen_Satan

@oflow I don't want that. So let me ask you a question to make sure. Are you saying the majority of Xbox supporters do in fact support MS's Kinect-based, connected, multi-service integrated entertainment experience? If all the criticisms I've read are in fact from MS enemies, I want to see the record set straight.

Unfallen_Satan

@IamTheBesteva :) No offense to anyone. I don't even know what Xbot means. I just pictured the exchange and it made me smile.

@sakaixx Windows has 80+% market share(2nd biggest is Apple with 10%), granted this is going down and has been for a while but at the rate it is going it will take decades before it isn't the biggest OS. It has the advantage that no PCs/Laptops are made without it. So you are wrong Microsoft was, is and will continue to be one of the biggest tech giants.

Unfallen_Satan
Unfallen_Satan

@Dream-on-stereo @Unfallen_Satan @oflow I too am an admirer of the Kinect, not necessarily the device itself since I don't own it, but what it tries to do. Do the majority of Xbox users you know also think Kinect is win? Or do they expect it to be a win once paired with Oculus?

ziseknsa
ziseknsa

@Unfallen_Satan @oflow  I do, I like Kinect now, for $450 you get the Console + Kinect camera + Titanfall + 1 year of XBL...

I understand why MS pushed Kinect, it is part of the system, and it is awesome!!
