HBO Go, Twitter, Vine Coming to Xbox One By End of 2014

Microsoft announces a total of 45 new apps are coming to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 worldwide.

by

Less than a week before its E3 press conference next week, Microsoft today announced that more than 45 new entertainment apps are coming to Xbox One and Xbox 360 around the world. Some of these include Vine, HBO Go, ShowTime Anytime, Comedy Central, Major League Gaming, and new embedded Twitter functionality, all of which are scheduled to be available by the end of 2014. Once these apps arrive, Microsoft's app catalog will increase by 25 percent to more than 225 apps in total. There are around 180 apps available now, Microsoft says on the Xbox Wire.

"Xbox fans are spending more time than ever on the console, spending more than five hours a day on Xbox One," Xbox executive Yusuf Mehdi said in a statement. "Today as we announce new commitments from dozens of our partners, including deep integration with experiences like Twitter and Vine, we hit an important milestone in our journey to deliver unique experiences on Xbox. We're thrilled to break new ground in social TV experiences like we're doing with Twitter on Xbox One."

The new Twitter functionality will be baked directly into the Xbox One's TV experience in the United States. You'll be able to see tweets related to the shows you're watching in real time, and there will also be a "Trending" section (show at left) within the OneGuide that will show the content people are most actively talking about. You can see a video above of how Twitter integration works on Xbox One.

"It will now be easier to discover what shows are trending in real-time on Twitter, tune-in, and follow the conversation right from within the Xbox One interface," Twitter VP of business development Jana Messerschmidt said. "We are excited to work with the Xbox One team and continue to deliver unique entertainment experiences.”

Below is a list of the new apps coming to Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as the regions where you can find them. Microsoft recently dropped the Xbox Live Gold requirement for entertainment apps, meaning you can use these apps without needing to pay a $60/year subscription. Notably, Vine, HBO Go, ShowTime Anytime, Comedy Central, Major League Gaming, and Twitter are confirmed for release by the end of 2014, but there's no word on when the other apps will be available.

I'm just pissed that it has taken so long to get HBO go on the X1. The end of the year is unacceptable for an app that is currently running great on a last gen console I'm mean seriously Microsoft wtf.

lol this is why the ps4 is mile ahead because it seems like Xbox wants to support the us more than say all Xbox gamers in all countries .  Sony does it evenly . lol truly pathetic that out of 45 apps only around 10 actually make it to Canada and even then there utter junk apps so who cares .

Pretty crappy if you are in Canada or many other parts of the world.  Big reason I wont be getting a USAbox.

Decent article though with actual facts for all of your readers, not just your US readers.  Gamespot improving???

I have never in my life seen so many pre-E3 announcements as MS is bombing the media with in 2014.  It is just positive news after positive news from them right now.

I couldn't be more curious about a press event as I am for the MS Xbox E3 event next week.  This is a clinic in how you build momentum.  But seriously...what do they have left???  Allegedly a lot, but we will see.

Most importantly, Microsoft announced all of this stuff now so they wont have to waste time on it at E3. I'm loving how focused Phil Spencer has made Xbox as a whole. Games, games, games and more games is what E3 is all about. I pity a company that goes on the stage and talks about anything other than games.

HBO's not on xb1? What a half baked piece of crap xb1 is .

Time for another price hike, someone has to pay for this. Not that it really matters to me as I have not payed $60 for my live in years.

US only for most apps, and they ask why the xbox is not selling well in other places. 22/46 of total

Considering that MS is dropping the whole Gold Requirement using the Apps, It would be nice if MS can at least lower the Gold Membership price back to it's original price and be at par with PS+ prices  for you Xbox One fans.

Wow! That's like, amazing! If only I could have those on PC or on a smart TV. :(

Comedy Central, HBO GO and Twitter FTW

most of these require a paid membership right? (I don't mean XBL gold)

Some good news for the Xbox One, just got tweeted from Phil Spencer that the June SDK is going to devs now freeing up more GPU power. Looks like the Xbox One "may" finally start to see some Next Gen graphics. Could be why so many games have been delayed.

If the x1 is half baked in your opinion then the Crapstation4 is not baked at all

@ghost140 Content providers pay to develop their own apps.

Blazen702

What price hike are you talking about? You don't need xbox gold anymore for any of the apps. Nice try

Blazen702

Hbo go is not on new TVs. Netflix yes but they don't have over 250 apps.

tjkraz

@jake198624 Let's not make this out to be any more difficult than it is.  Sign-in credentials are entered once.  After that, you can be watching with just two commands:  "Xbox On" and "Xbox, watch Netflix."

I won't pretend that it revolutionizes the TV watching experience, but I can probably be watching (using voice commands) faster than you can find your universal remote.

What IS revolutionary--and you cannot do with your 5-year old flatscreen--is Xbox Snap mode.  Being able to stream a live sporting event, Skype, Twitch, friend list or some other content in the margin while STILL gaming is the best console feature in a decade.

@aquoon_0nly For one it hasn't launched in other places. Still has over 30+ other countries to launch in. The PS4 doesn't have as many apps on it and it's selling just fine in other countries, so I don't think that's the issue.

The ALL-IN-ONE place for games, movies, tv, sports and apps.

@EasyComeEasyGo only fools pay full price. i havent paid over 30 bucks a year since the very first time i got xbl on the old xbox

b00me
b00me

@EasyComeEasyGo  Microsoft stores, Amazon.com, and Walmart have LIVE cards on sale all the time for around $50, some times as low as $40. I've been on LIVE for almost 7 years and I've never paid more than $50 for a year of LIVE.

@EdAl2112 smart tvs are cool but you have very limited performance on them. i have a low end and mid range samsung smart tv but the apps that are designed for it are not the greatest. typing with the infrared remote is the biggest barrier for me.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@EdAl2112 You know sarcasm aside this is the entire point. Now people don't need a PC and crappy overpriced smart TV. They can just use Xbox.

b00me

@EdAl2112 Yes, options usually are amazing, especially if you don't have a smart TV or a laptop you can keep near you. You can just use your Xbox One.

@themc_7

A lot of those do either require a membership or a supported cable/satellite provider, some of which are kind of ridiculous. I can understand it for the HBO and related apps, but why do I have to have a cable/satellite subscription to access FOX Now or any other standard channel app that broadcasts over the air?

@wookiegr you sure talk alot about something you dont even consider buying. whats the point? go find a better hobby

@Blazen702

I don't know what the f*ck he's talking about either...Unless your PC is hooked up to your TV, your TV doesn't have independent HBO Go.

aquoon_0nly
aquoon_0nly

@blackace @aquoon_0nly thats the problem, if they wanna count as an advantage on xbox, they cant count US only. Ps4 never promised a streaming machine. simple, if microsoft advantage like apps and kinect doesnt work well outside US, it's not really an advantage(other than in US territory)

wookiegr
wookiegr

@blackace @aquoon_0nly Until either console is capable of streaming my extensive collection of bluray remuxes in MKV format with HD Audio I will not consider either console an viable option. Whether they play TV or MP3 or proprietary formats they are useless unless they support open source codecs and containers.

godslayer61
godslayer61

@b00me @EdAl2112  or if you only live in the us , so who cares there just pissing off more owners  making them feel like if you don't live in the us your second rate . O well Sony does it right

oflow
oflow

@dlCHIEF58 @themc_7 because the standard channels arent free you pay for them in your cable subscription.

themc_7
themc_7

@dlCHIEF58 @themc_7 that's what I thought. I wouldn't pay an individual subscription fee for everyone of these show apps.

wookiegr
wookiegr

@blackace @wookiegr I wouldn't be surprised if devs knew this SDK was on the way but couldn't say anything about it officially. It could explain why the majority of all the games announced have been mysteriously getting delayed till next year. It will certainly allow devs to open up more of the X1's power if it were the case creating the parity across the new consoles they need.

tjkraz
tjkraz

@jake198624 @tjkraz Ummm....Snap Mode doesn't have anything to do with taking photographs of the screen.

oflow
oflow

@wookiegr @monson21502 @EasyComeEasyGo and it doesnt cost $500 even before they removed the kinect I got mine for $450 and it came with titanfall which is the same price as a ps4 with a game.

monson21502
monson21502

@wookiegr @monson21502 @EasyComeEasyGo you would have to be a fool  if you bought a xbox one for that . . people bought gaming system for games. this is all gravy at no extra cost. unlike most tvs or blu ray players ect ect  that cost more for a tv or BRP with these features then without
